I think it was just one of those things where Nike waited too long. These hadn't been retro'd in the 20+ years since they initially came out, and I assume they thought that this semi-recent resurgence of/interest in 90s-esque culture as a cue to release them again (especially since "White Men Can't Jump" came out in 92) rather than just respond to the obvious interest of people who wanted them. Plus, they're harder to pull off than a lot of other athletic shoes since people aren't really gonna ball in these anymore (even more so since they don't have the air pack)
