im of the opinion that aldens are overrated. i know, i know, every so called fashion buff glorifies aldens as being god tier boots, but im convinced most of these people havent actually owned any. mine look creased and shitty after less than a year of average wear. worthy of $700? nobody actually wears a shoe every single day. jesus christ. why are you getting so booty blasted about this? there is literally nothing on the face of this planet that is suited to being a shoe that will withstand that for so many years.
you know the kind of shit i do in my shoes? wading through rivers, doing up to my knee in mud, walking miles (while my shoes are still wet), hiking, climbing (not legitimate climbing mind you, but still stress that is atypical for shoes), leaving my shoes outside because they are wet and caked in mud, not using shoe trees, the list goes on.
i mean seriously dude, if youre>>9887756, and you wore those shoes every day, for, idk 9 months, because he says less than a year, than your shoes are in pretty damn good condition.
i simply destroy chucks, because the awful shit i put them through, and thats with wearing desert boots, hiking boots, winter boots, vans, two pairs of leather boots, and two pairs of leather shoes. ive never had a pair of beaters last more than two years, and i wear them until they simply dont work as shoes anymore, not until they get a crease or something. i wear my chucks until the canvas is ripping, there are massive holes, the rubber is coming off, hell i wore a hole through the sole of my last pair.

if you dont take care of your shoes, they wont take care of you. shoes are tools, wear the right one for the job, and take proper care of it, or it will fail you.

And that is all I am trying to say.
Shoes wear out.
Buying expensive shoes does not save you fucking money. I get so sick of hearing that shit.
Rich peoples shoes last for many years simply because they have shit tons of shoes.

>> No.9892235

>>9892192
expensive shoes do last longer, especially if you take care of them properly.
if you cant afford to own more than one expensive pair of shoes, dont buy one expensive pair of shoes.
i had a pair of $24 (poorfag) desert boots that lasted through 4 years of really bad abuse (including hiking 5 miles in the snow because citys are shit and i thought it would be plowed). theyd still be going strong but they got fucked by the salt in the aforementioned snow, i thought it actually looked cool at first, but it started to irk me more and more so i gave them to my mom to see if she could donate them, since they still worked fine, no holes or anything, just coated in really really thick salt.
it doesnt matter how much you spend, one pair of shoes will never withstand everything. but a pair of hand made, locally sourced, hand cured, high quality leather, boots, that you take care of properly, will last you a lot longer than my aforementioned chucks.
could you just through hike the AT on repeat for a decade? no. no way. but will they last the rest of your life if you use/wear them appropriately and take care of them? yeah.
my chucks wont last the rest of my life if i wear them only a few times a weak. they just wont. and i wouldnt even want them too, which is probably more too the point, really.

>> No.9892246

also you shouldnt be wearing the same pair of shoes every day, not for longevity reasons, but because youll be stale as hell. one pair of shoes wont work for every fit in every setting, and you need to change it up some times.

see, this is bulllshit.
any shoe past shit tier quality will last a long time if you baby them.
Handmade , expensive shoes are well taken care of always. This is the ONLY reason they last longer.

Mile for mile, under similar care conditions, price means dick.

>> No.9892497

why are you getting so upset about it?
$700 is a bit excessive, but like $200 is going to last a lot longer than $35. they just will.
besides, if your not taking care of your shoes, you dont deserve to own them. and that goes for everything you own. take care of your shit you stupid sperglord

He's right; you know it, and I know it. Well-made leather shoes are going to have the same lifespan given equal care and repairs - $700 is a price premium paid for a brand name, that's all.

>> No.9892602

hi, joining in this interesting conversation. i dont think its fair to compare chucks to a pair of leather hiking boots, obviously. I do think price matters to some extent, but i will say this: i think its sily to assume that just because a boot is made in italy, or made in the us., or wherever, that its inherently a better shoe and wil last longer. i disagree with this. i have made in china boots, with vibram soles, and leather uppers, that have held up just as well, if not better, than my made in the usa leather boots which were 3 times the price.

>> No.9892634

>>9892602
well the price is arbitrary, but it is an indicator. if you pay more for an inferior product, it obviously wont.
high quality leather, made into a high quality boot, by hand, by a skilled craftman, will be better than something that isnt. and it will be more expensive than something made in a sweat shop.
but if you pay $5,000 for some special pair of shoes, for whatever reason, its obviously not going to be 10x better just because its 10x the price.

>> No.9892650

>>9892634
i guess i can agree with this for the most part. but why do we assume that shoes/bots made "by hand by skilled craftsman" are always going to be better than ones made by machines or factories?

>> No.9892663

>>9892650
well, if were assuming the best conditions, it will be. if the guy does it because he loves it, and he takes his time, and hes careful, and hes knows what hes doing and hes really good at it.
if hes overworked, and its just another shit job, then it wont be as good.

>> No.9892710

>>9892663
Most shoes I have ever had , its not the craftsmanship that wears out, its the leather.
there is only so high quality your leather can be. any shoes over 100 bucks are made with good leather.
Moire expensive leather might have a nice finish, but it will not last longer.

which "fashion buffs" have you been consulting?

Alden is infamous for having atrocious quality control for the price
Bad customer service
Blobby lasts (subjective).

People who "know shoes" avoid alden, and
only gung-ho ones about it are the "buy merrikan 4ever!!!!!" fags.

Was in a shoe shop last month trying out some cordovan ankle boots.

The alden pair I tried on had two crooked speedhooks.

Seriously, WTF? Even red wing and budget chippewa can get that shit right and alden unionized workers can't even set fucking speedhook on the right way around?

The salesman gave me a look when I pointed them out and said "Ah, yeah, it's "very american".

Bought some C&J for the same price.
Infinitely better QC.

I don't like any of the aldens I own. I gave them enough chances, but they're just shit. Thin, bad cuts of leather.
Poor stitcing prone to fraying and loosening.
Speedhooks all fucky.
Poorly dyed shell.

I should've listened to all the warnings and just bought English (edward green/trickers/c&J et.all) or Spanish (carmina) for the same price or cheaper.

Arguably beyond 1k theres not much difference beyond minor details between shoemakers. Diminishing returns as some people say. Maybe more interesting leather and finish, but construction wise don't think theres much to write home about. Even better shapes and lasts caps out at around the 1k mark from my observations
