I think the best looking ones are the urbanears zinken. Totally bland, unbranded, generic look so it'll just blend into what you wear. Pretty good sound quality too(Not as good as the main competitors in the same price[ath-m50, or even the hd280 which are about $50 less] but still very good)

In MSRP... So its kinda hard to compare it, since sometimes theres a crazy amazon deal(The 598's once went on sale for $95) when the other is still at retail pricing.
The only difference is the 598's sound slightly more base heavy(Not ness. better, and indistinguishable unless you A-B them), have a more comfortable head band, and a different color scheme that looks ugly to me.

>>9879319
Yeah, i love my hd280's, but they are too wide at the headband area(just above your temples) so it looks pretty silly. As far as closed headphones go, they're the best imo(Followed by the V6/V7506 which look better and have better constriction.)

I actually like the 558's sound better, plus they're actually literally the exact same driver and construction, the only difference is that the HD558 have a piece of foam stuck to the grill which you can open up and remove, then you'll have the HD598. You can stick the foam right back on too if you want.

They're the MFA of headphones though, although M50s fit that too.

Right, forgot about that. I think $100 to $250 might be reasonable. I'm not sure at what price open-backed (assuming that's the usual type for in-home listening) headphones start experiencing diminishing returns.

>> No.9879838

>>9879538
No... The foam mod does not upgrade your headphones. The 598(and 595) have different drivers and ALSO have the foam inserts.
Taking them out might make them sound better to you(imo it isnt any better) but it isnt the difference between the mid and high end models.

That said, i also prefer the 558 to the 598 in audio quality. Only thing i prefer the 598s for is the head band, and that isnt worth the sound, ugly color, and extra $$$.

This guy has good advice. Also check out the old 7509 (not the 7509HD) if you can find one in good condition and the new 7510.

What you really want, if you're into super accurate sound (which you should be) is Etymotic ER-4 IEMs, either the S or the P with the S adaptor cable. The S is slightly more accurate with higher impedance, the P has lower impedance and slightly boosted bass, and the adaptor cable adds impedance and matches them up. They're eminently practical and more accurate and detailed than any other conventional driver headphones you can get until you get near the $1,000 mark.

Try them with the foam tips instead of the silicone ones first.

bass is suuuuuper true but if your source is good it can be really deep. as far as bass goes, mr balloon hands by ott or coast is clear by skrillex really come to mind as sounding fucking incredible in these. they won't rumble though, and cranking the bass eq on my fiio e17 just distorts it, so bassnectar and friends can come out a little weak. i already had sennheiser hd598's, which are pretty good for acoustic or classical and other mellow stuff, and the xb500, which are literally the most rumbly headphones ever produced, but they're not very clean sounding at all. i bought the beyer's so i could relive my angsty teenager days and blast mcr without it sounding like shit (hd598 doesn't do too well at higher volumes). the only real downside to me with the beyers is that they're a little uncomfortable until you get used to them (the clamp is like way tighter than most headphones i've used, turns out it's a good thing), and they can get a tad sibilant when loud, but that doesn't really bother me.

if you want insane bass rumble but don't care too much about sound quality go for the sony xb500. the low range goes down to something stupid, like 2hz, and the bass eq on my amp/dac just makes them more rumbly. pretty sure i couldn't blow them out with the fiio if i tried. they're also definitely the most comfortable of the three, so that's a bonus.

both, really. the difference between flac and 320 mp3's is pretty close to negligible without a nice dac/amp and trained ears, but after a while you might be able to pick up on some compression. anything below 320 is a lot easier to notice though. getting a dac/amp is definitely recommended, especially if you'll be getting the 250ohm model (which is the cheapest iirc), because your device might not be able ot power it properly, and also because most laptop headphone jacks are shitty. i've been using a fiio e17, and the usb cable i used died a few weeks ago so i tried the onboard jack and it's real bad. that said, if you're just playing it out of an ipod or phone or whatever, the difference between running them through the fiio or not is a lot less noticeable. i'd say file quality is more important, but most laptops have shit sound cards, so a usb dac will really help the quality but is by no means necessary (at first anyway).

apparently the hd598's and xb500's are some of the most comfortable headphones around, so i guess i was kind of spoiled there, ahahah. akg stuff is really comfy in my experience (a friend had pic related), but pretty much the opposite of what you're looking for sonically, and pretty much everything sennheiser makes is pretty comfy too. a friend of mine's got he-500's (and he just bought lcd-2's), and they're pretty comfortable, especially the ear space, but most planar-magnetics run a little heavy for me.

>nice dac/amp

is this actually necessary / does it actually produce a noticeable improvement? just curious because i've never actually seen one IRL

and out of those headphones you listed, which would you recommend most for comfiness/bassiness? the reviews all seem good and idk which to pick haha

>Oh yeah I wanted to ask,
>>but if your source is good
First it depends on how it's recorded and tuned/remastered. A bad record will always sound bad no matter what kind of compression or audio setup you have.

Then we have mp3 vs flac which >>9883572
has explained.

After that it depends on your DAC, which will determines how the source will be translated/delivered through the connected amp and headphones.

the improvement won't be too noticeable at first, but it's huge once you get used to it and look back at how it used to be (at least with my laptop). you don't have to go all out though, just something cheap and portable will do wonders. i got mine for ~$100 USD, and i've had it for nearly two years with no issues (looking to upgrade though, probably gonna go for the schiit stack, any wise anons have advice?). amps are less important, and do more to provide sound signatures through different tubes and shit (words that sound like they shouldn't describe noise, like warm, are created by this). i don't really care too much for tubes though, solid state all the way. but you really don't need to worry about that rn.

>>9883599
9/10 people don't even know what bitrate means. pretty sure itunes still sells 280 or some shit. i cry evertim :^(

>>9883610
spotify's high quality stream is 320, so yeah, it's a great start. if you really get into shit you could download stuff (my collection is pushing 300gb, flac has ruined me), buy vinyl if you're into analog, or jump for tidal once/if it starts gathering steam

>> No.9883642

>>9883610
It should. Tbh don't worry too much about it, newer music are usually decently recorded and remastered songs are _sometimes_ good. Digitally streamed stuff are also getting on the higher quality nowadays.

The most game changing would be your headphones first. You can do without an amp (providing the headphones don't need amping) and without a DAC too.

this is really important too. good mastering is definitely more important than your file type or your setup. that said, bad mastering /could/ be considered a creative decision, like the whole lo-fi folk or punk thing. either way, good gear won't make bad music sound any better.

i got my xb500's for 200 almost three years ago and they still look and operate like they're brand new. granted, they stopped making them, so i haven't seen them dip below 300 in a while, but they are in my opinion the most comfortable, and undeniably the bassiest (in rumble strength anyway) headphones ever made.
