In the vein of a post from the last thread, what are some pros and cons to buying a fake Rolex?

I have absolutely no intention of dropping several thousand dollars on a watch, and I really don't care about the branding, I just love the look of the Explorer II. So far I've only seen an Invicta rip-off and I'd rather just buy a fake with a decent movement in it, instead of wasting money on an Invicta. But if anyone knows of a decent alternative, I'm all ears.

So you can measure minutes when diving underwater. The 10, 20, 25, 30 markings on the bezel and so on are used to measure time as well.

The bezel rotates so that you can line it up with the minute hand right when you jump in the water and that way you time how much time has elapsed. A lot of watches have special markers for the first 15 or 20 minutes because old school diving tables that no one uses anymore were based on either 15 or 20 minute time intervals. Also the bezel rotates only counterclockwise for safety. If you accidentally bump it underwater and it goes too far clockwise then you would think less time has passed and then you could stay under for too long.

Cons: you'd be a massive faggot. Would you buy a car that had the same body as a Mercedes S class but had shitty cloth and plastic interior and a four cylinder Suzuki engine? If yes, go ahead and buy it.
Looks nice on the outside but the heart and soul of it is shit.

They are hand made so the cost to produce them is higher then other watches, because they sell so few units compared to other watch makers they need to make a decent amount of profit off each watch. Also if they weren't so expensive and exclusive they loose a bit of appeal

>> No.9846331

what this guy says >>9846299, kinda I guess. I don't see the point of a fake. If you don't want the real thing, then just buy something cheaper that you do like, but why try to front? You won't be fooling anyone who knows their shit and the people you will be fooling won't give two shits. I mean, you do you. do what makes you happy. Well, almost. They are "hand finished" and not completely btw.

Black polishing one single bridge can take a full day, geneva striping a medium sized plate wolud take even a week, and that's before anglage, perlage, engraved writing, dusting...

Also, you have to account material reasearch, caliber developping, degree of complication in the movement, prime material waste, etc...

Just a very, very few watchmakers go into a total hand made process; it's extremely slow and fatigating.

They are so expensive because there is no other way to achive that kind of finishing but under the pacient hands of a true artist and this fellas are dedicated to produce an almost perfect excersice of unchallenged and beautiful engineering.

>Pic related, the unbelievable amount of work put on the swan-neck regulator and hand engraved balance wheel's bridge on my Lange.

Both pieces are less than 6mm long and the engraver spends lmost a whole work day to make the engraving, barely visible in my bad taken pic; this means he makes aroun 25 per month. You do the math.

No. If that's what you think you don't know quality.
A Honda Accord is fine but why would you post about it in a car thread? Same with seiko in a watch thread. If that's all you can afford fine but it's not a luxury watch brand and it doesn't pretend to be.

If you're buying a JLC rather than a Grand Seiko you're mainly paying for brand and aesthetic in my opinion.
Lange is more comparable to Credor but by Credor it's almost more comparable to Laurent Ferrier or Philippe Dufour. Or high end Patek with the repeaters and stuff.
Look up Hodinkee in-depth reviews of Credor or their visit to the manufacture and you'll see how it is top end quality.
I think that outside the SARB / SARX series and other "higher" end the Seiko watches aren't of notable quality but it also comes down to if you like watches in general or discriminately high end, high quality watches.

Comparing a quartz 50$ Seiko to a Breguet has little point, they're different in all ways but their function.
A 50$ Seiko 5 is quite important even if not exactly the most interesting watch in the world on the other hand. It is the base of the others without all the refinement that makes it luxury.
Seiko is a huge company and they do a lot of things. Their bread and butter can't really be compared to high end swiss stuff but their innovative stuff is Greubel Forsey / GP / Breguet tier or beyond.

Grand seiko / Credor are amazingly technologically and in the quality of everything from design elements, movement, finishing. If you don't like their rather reserved designs, that's your thing, but it doesn't make the quality of their product any worse.
Seiko brand won't impress many, but that's not the point of them either.

I rarely buy expensive things for myself but when I do it's because I feel I can't be without it.

Obviously I'm a pleb but the finish on the Snowflake is incredible, and some of the others aren't bad either. Ok I'll make my top 10 of pieces that I could personally afford. I'm going to include pieces that I already own as that's the reason I own them. Some would have to be purchased pre-owned of course. . Also, no particular order. And off the top of my head...

Breguet marine big date rose gold
Own this one

JLC reverso duoface 18k pink gold in the original size. One that came out again in 1994. Mine is newer than this same model I'm saying. I own this one.

Ulysses Nardin Maxi Marine rubber bracelet. Stunning in person do not own.

I'm ready for the hate on this one... Breitling Navitimer world with bracelet and off white face. I own this one. Was a gift from the wife it's what I wear to work. The E6B is relevant to my job.

A Lange Cabaret with the blue dial in white gold

VC constantin

JLC master compressor yellow gold

Breguet classique in pink gold with power reserve indicator

Fuck two more...

I'll take the corum admirals cup and the blancpain 50 fathoms. I guess.... Breguet and JLC are my favorite brands atm would probably look for a couple of those instead.

I'm sure I'm missing some great watches. That's top of my head.

Most Rolexes are very nice, but most Rolexes are also extremely predictable.
There are, however, tons of nice ones out there and finding them is easy.

That said, the vintage Rolex game is brutally unforgiving and turns a lot of collectors off Rolex altogether.

Just avoid the following:
- "new" Rolexes. They are dentistcore as fuck. So avoid anything with a Maxi-dial or a ceramic bezel, or the the new fat-lugged cases
- two-tone anything. There's no way around it, it will always say "I couldn't afford solid gold".
- 34mm pieces. They are simply too small for today's standards. (I'm not advocating a 45mm Breitling, but Air Kings, OP's, OP Dates, etc are visibly much, much smaller than even the 36mm Datejusts) Wear one and be prepared to tell people it's your dad's watch, because otherwise people will assume you're wearing a woman's watch, while other Rolex collectors will know exactly how low your cost ceiling is. If you can't afford anything bigger than 34mm in Rolex, try another brand like Omega or vintage Heuer (pre-TAG, of course).

A safe bet would be any 'professional' piece from the 1970's. (Sub, SD, Exp, ExpII, etc) They look good and prices are still reasonable.

Steel wool works, but a Scotch-brite pad is better. You take a little square of it and glue it to the eraser end of a pencil. A little masking tape on the watch to protect the polished surfaces and go in slow strokes with the direction of the brushing. Works like a charm.

Wait...did you think anon meant to just take a pad of steel wool and start scrubbing?

Their US headquarters is in a neighboring town where I live. They have a boutique at the mall near my house as well. I went in there just looking and I saw some beautiful pieces, looked for the goat watch for keks but it wasn't there. Anyway both employees of
Course were wearing a Nardin.
The one the male employee had on was 24 grand.
So my question is this... Do you think these people get insane discounts or is it just a piece they wear while at work but can't take home??... Although that wouldn't make much sense because they don't sell pre-owned shit.
Got me thinking about how much of a discount you would need to get for a boutique employee to be able to afford a 24 thousand dollar watch.

I'm actually friend of several agents working in the boutiques; they don't own the pieces, and they won't enjoy a good discount on one unless they have been working to the same luxury group (Richmont, Swatch, Festina, LVMH, etc...) for at least two or three years.

The watches they wear are for advertising and get stored in the boutique safe before the day ends every day.

Two concrete examples of this:

I've known Jerome Lambert (Montblanc current CEO and JLC former CEO) for almost a decade now. He normally assists to the watch fairs and there he offers a dinner in wich he entertains some of the best known local collectors (and me, obviously).

If I don't mess up the dates, I think, at the dinner held in 2011 fair (when he was till directing JLC) he was wearing a very complicated Reverso, The Grand Complication À Triptyque (pic related) I ask him if it belonged to him and he answered he wouldn't be able to afford it but he was in fact trying to sell it (the last of the 75 pieces edition) to another guest at the dinner, reason he brought it from Switzerland.

On another ocassion, I was invited to a party held by AP when they launched a collaboration to fund new artistis in Lationamerica, starting with MACO in Mexico. The party was awesome but when the guests left I managed to stay to the afterparty. Then the light went on and a couple of gentleman passed with a portatil safe (the kind they have in Vegas) and collected all the watches the agents were wearing during the event (for a moment they even tried to collect mine, lol). Later, we stayed partying until like 6 a.m.

All the watches in question weren't theirs.

If Apple can offer such discount is because the iShit is shit and even they know it in secret.

This is my old watch, a Relic. Preddy reliable, it went through hell and back with me and still works.

Anyway, I'm joining the US Coast Guard soon, and I'll be needing a new watch that has to fit an annoying specific criteria. It was recommended that I buy a G-Shock, but goddamn I hate everything digital when it comes to watches, I don't know why. It needs to be black(face can be dark grey), be suitable for occasional submersion in water for swimming(I'm not a diver, so it'll never see depths more than 10 feet or so), and preferably be made out of stainless steel so I don't have to worry about rust or degradation. Any suggestions in the <$200usd price range?
