Someone else was asking about buying a movement and fitting it to a case and just how feasible that is. I'd recommend against it unless you know for sure that the movement will fit the case. If the distance from where the dial rests against the front of the case back to where the stem goes in to the movement isn't just right, the hole in the case for the stem and the spot where it goes in to the movement won't line up and there'll be no way to get the movement to sit properly. If you want some sort of project watch, buy an Asian 2824 clone. Dials, hands and cases are plentiful for 2824s. Pic related is a watch that I cobbled together, although it required a bit more work as it uses an A. Schild 1913 movement with all the other parts being for a 2824.

You'd be much better off with the RolExp. The Mark II looks way too 1970's and doesn't have as much retro charm as you probably thought when you bought it.

The problem with the vintage watches on eBay is that they are very often cobbled together from a mishmash of parts. It may be a functioning watch, but as a collector, they are basically worthless. Of course, there are plenty of very, very good pieces out there, but they're usually very pricey because assurance of provenance costs.

Pictured is my own vintage piece, a Bulova that my grandfather bought shortly after coming home from the Pacific in WW2. It's very small, as you can see. I don't usually wear it, since yellow gold doesn't go well with my skin tone.

Servicing can be pretty expensive but vintage omegas are great watches and they're beautiful. I inherited mine so I didn't have to hunt through ebay but good luck with that, make sure you do your homework thoroughly before you buy some frankensteined mess or a watch that's falling apart and wait a while if you need to until something good comes up for sale.

If it needs servicing (it probably does) then I mailed mine to Govberg watch repair and it was expensive and it took a long time but they did a pretty good job and used real omega replacement parts where necessary. I don't know any other good places but I'm sure there's a lot, maybe you can find one where you live so you don't have to mail it off.

I also bought a vintage Seiko king quartz, if you're not too much of a snob to buy quartz then those are a lot easier since they're less delicate and you can get a hell of a high end watch for cheap because everyone turns up their noses at quartz.

Longines is legendary for their support of antique/vintage/discontinued models.

A friend of mine has a gold Longines chrono from the late 50's which needed service. He sent it into to Longines and they didn't have a;; of the spare parts on hand so they actually hand-made the replacement parts that his movement needed.

It cost a fair amount, but there aren't too many companies out there that are willing to service all of their watches, regardless of how long ago they were made. Compare this to Rolex, which won't service watches over 30 years old, or Seiko, which stops producing spare parts for models that are over ten years old.

Omega supposedly does a very good job too but they're expensive and they don't give a shit about keeping your watch in all original collector condition. They'll fix it until it looks brand new again which is nice I guess, but it means they replace half the parts in your watch even if it isn't really necessary.

Quality is going to be different on all of them, but I'll post this as a fair warning. This is what a properly oiled jewel from a Longines I was working on looks like. No debris in it, no oil on the flats, just a nice clean jewel.

There are many reasons:
1. It's a way of standing out of the crowd because they are not common outside of Russia, so it's kind of unique.
2. They are cheap but they are well built and meant to resist
2. Movements are very solid and precise
3. Cyrillic letters give them an extra "coolness" and make them eye-catching
4. The interesting history behind these watches. The Vostok factory made watches for the red army back in the 2. World War

Probably a digital watch with ABC (altimeter/barometer/compass) plus all sorts of alarms and timers and stuff. So something like a Suunto or some of the G-shocks.

Personally all I need is an automatic diver. I don't need any additional stuff and the ruggedness and water resistance is the only extra feature I really need and use.

Hey bud

I wanna tell you something and I'm gonna preface my warning with the fact that I am a cockmongling Sinn shill. I love their Nazi engineering skills and attention to nice design with rugged performance

BUT-
Don't get the tegiment coating if you intend to beat the shit out of your watch. The standard 316L steel is hardly the best but iit'll eat shit and dent fine, you can brush it out later. With tegiment, it'll gouge like a bitch and you'll see the steel through the layer. No fixing it. I love muh 856 and its dehumidifier technology but the tegiment just doesn't work for keeping the watxh in good shape. Double that for the PVD coated versions, you're gonna lose the black coating AND tegiment if you ever wear them for moderate activities. Even a hard fall to the floor can scratch the "iinvincible" tegiment

I'm now in a funny situation where my 856 is my beater and my Damasko is my more coddled tool watch. It's amusing because imo Damaskos steel can eat shit and not dent like a champ. Their Damest coating is also about 10x as strong as regular DLC and won't scratch in impressive circumstances. BUT it CAN and Will scratch at some point

I wish there was a beater watch packing a chronometer 2824, Damaskos steel, and Signs dehumidification technology that would be ideal. But for now if you want a true beater, I have to say: go Damasko, or just go and get a Sinn 556 because that's cheaper and at least you can fix it. Or a discontinued 656 if you want 1000 gauss antimagnetic protection

Definitely 40. 43 will wear quite large, even on your wrist, because of how thin the bezel is.

It's real ceramic, why wouldn't it be? It's not some rare unobtanium, I have plenty of coffee mugs lying around which are made of something pretty similar. I haven't found any good comparisons of Steinhart to more expensive ceramic watches but it does seem to be the real deal and it's definitely not actually made out of recycled coffee mugs.

I just really wish the ceramic bezels came in pepsi, but apparently that's a pretty hard color combination to make. Even Rolex only recently got as close as ugly off-red and purplish blue.

Not sure what you mean by true GMT, it seems to be the type where you can adjust the 24hr hand independent of the others. That's not the same as the Rolex/Omega movements which adjust the 12hr hand independent of the others which seems more "true GMT" to me since the 24hr hand is presumably meant to be set to GMT time and never changed. Both types can accomplish the same thing though, I guess.

To be totally honest though it seems like Fisherman anon has some disposable cash, therefore I'd say a reasonable option would be a Made in Grorious Japan 007 diver with aftermarket Super Oyster bracelet, which are virtually indestructible. I have a fossil chrono which is actually mostly functional, but the big seconds hand is the running seconds and the smaller seconds subdial is the chrono seconds. That would be a little weird but fine I guess, except there's also a tachymeter bezel which is 100% useless because it's on the running seconds.

I'm not sure if the people designing the watch had never actually seen a chronograph and had no idea what they were doing, or if they did it on purpose because the typical normies buying fossils would be unable to comprehend why the second hand didn't move.

Raymond Weil is pretty much a fashion brand these days imo.

Speaking of, what does /fa/ think of Raymond Weil's latest creation? A Tourbillon with (so far) undisclosed movement manufacturer ;-)

MUH CARBEN FOIBAH. Why anyone would drop $40k on this I don't know. They're not going to be changing any markets with this and anyone who buys it is literally spending $40k for the novelty of having a tourbillon.

That's entry Patek and ALS money right there. Or a decent collection of watches from the greatest watch house of all time; JLC.

>> No.9800801

>>9800753
You can get a used annual calendar chronograph for half that or even a tourbillon chronograph for about the same.
Based pre-owned Blancplain.
I also find that Raymond Weil looks a lot like the GP three bridges.
Meanwhile, chinese tourbillons are down to sub-500$

>> No.9800861

>>9800801

You're right about the GP bridges. But the design was inspired by a cello and its f shaped acoustic holes. I have no idea what they're actually called.

Good point on Blancpain. Definitely a better option.

Definitely, they're getting very cheap. I understand there is a lot of hand finishing on the higher end tourbillons, but is there really any reason other than 'muh tourbillon' for a tourbillon to cost as much as they do? Is it some gentleman's agreement among high end watchmakers to charge a high premium? The Tourbillon Tax?

It's a cool complication but something I'd never be interested in having unless I was very wealthy. As in, capacity to drop $100k without batting an eye.

They're pushed pretty hard by literally any shitty fashion blog over here in Norway. There's a discount code on a ton of them.

Hahhaha! Literally 99% of their watches looks like they're designed by kindergarteners.

Write down what it says on the back, I can't really tell.
But considering pic related it is looking good for you.

Assuming it's not a fake in any way, I suppose so.

I question due to the mechanism displaying L 629 1 and the case saying L1.620.3.

Also, just started to appreciate watches. :(

Is there a way to verify? (Watch specialist of some kind i guess?)

Go to your local jeweler/watchmaker, I'm sure they will help you.
