Let's have a poorfag thread. How to be effay without much money?

>thrift shops are an obvious staple
>H&M generally has some pretty cheap stuff
>diy (bleaching, dyeing) can turn a boring item into something nice

Inspo very welcome. Although me personally I like to take inspiration from anything including expensive stuff like SLP etc.

Comfycore and jewelwave are very accessible on low budgets. Jewel tones were prevalent in a lot of clothing in the 90's, so you'll see a lot of it in thrift stores. Comfycore is really a matter of styling.

However, I think the most important thing is to be riskier and try stuff you like, as opposed to trying to fit in to trends and looks that are popular here on /fa/. For example, you can try a basic fit with cheap pieces, but you're competing with all the other basic fits that use really nice, expensive items.

After you've done a bit of thrifting, stop for a while. I used to thrift a lot in high school and I've only bought at max 5 items over the past year. I've been focusing on styling stuff I have and weeding out bad purchases. When you're thrifting it can be easy to buy stuff just because it's cheap. Really work on keeping the gems- they don't have to be some nice brand name piece or anything. Just items you like, and look into all the ways you can style those pieces.

Also, invest in a few general shoe types and keep them in mind when buying clothes. I think a very basic combo to have would be white sneakers (can be keds or converse) and sleep black shoes that you can style up or down.

Alright, I know /fa/ isn't the biggest fan of slip-ons, but I guess this could be done with your eras and high pros (or any white piece of clothing anyway). They're my main summer shoe though and I accidentally ordered the unbearably true white model. They were white like the soles and stripes in the background at the beginning.
This is after two washes. The first wash left the color darker, but after drying they had irregular darker tea stains, so I had to wash them again. Still a little bit crumpled because of the washing and drying.

not him but it's a white t-shirt dyed like this: buy dye for fabrics and follow whatever instructions they come with. soak the t-shirt in the dye but only as far as you'd like it to be fully dyed. the dye will spread to the rest of the t-shirt less and less forming that fade. if it starts spreading too much, remove it.

I think that's how it's done, waiting for the original poster to confirm. gonna try it myself when I get some dye.

hope I made myself clear as english is not my first language.

Pretty much. I let the teabags soak for a while in a big bowl of hot water and removed them before adding shoes. Then I wet the shoes first and dropped them in the bowl. I stirred them around at the beginning and then let them soak for about an hour. Afterwards washed them until water runs clear, but as I said I had to wash them again, because they had some concentrated stains that showed up after drying.
You can google "tea dying" for instructions, I read a couple beforehand and roughly followed them.

Go for style, not fashion. Fashion comes and goes, white sneaks the month, meme shoe next month. Basic stuff that goes with anything like blue chambray shirt, white dress shirt and light blue polo is almost universal.

Shop the sales. Don't fall for the Joseph a bank and Kohl's almost every fucking day sales. Plus amazon.com has some shit like frye boots, cole Haan and other stuff occasionally cheap as hell. Sub 100. But its slim pickings.

Also the other day i went to Macy's found my the regular ralph Lauren shirts for $20 each. There was a glitch in the system, I bought five. The logo is kind of annoying but the quality is there and the fit is nice. Plus it goes with style I'm looking for. A rugged, preppy.

buy basics first (basic doesn't mean boring , find a colour scheme and stick to it, your wardrobe should consist of pieces that look good whenever you put them together in a fit
spend some money on good shoes, they mustn't be hella expensive though

steal shit! in big stores with multiple floors and many customers you can often find clothes without the magnetic safety clips, so just rip the tags off while in the dressing room, put the pieces on underneath your old clothes, or hide them in your backpack. It's better if you buy something while shoplifting to not raise suspicion.

after you have laid your wardrobe groundstones, expand with more expensive pieces
something that stands out and compliments your style, like a fresh jacket or something

Most important parts of your style are you hair, shoes and jacket. Put your emphasis on those and take care of your hygiene. Get a real wrist watch and at last a good perfume. Don't blind buy, be choosy and get one that makes you happy even if it will cost you. Alternatively just don't smell at all

Pro tip: Know about your local area thrift stores.

It's seriously amazing some of the stuff people decide to donate. I've found some D&G shirts, Naked & Famous Jeans and some other amazing stuff just by keeping an eye out. You'll have to wade through a lot of crap but there's some deals to be had.

-Tip 1: When buying jeans look at the crotch, see if there's a lot of distressing between the thighs as this is a sign it doesn't have too much life left in them due to sweet/friction/bacteria.

-Tip 2: When buying shirts light yellowing around the collar/pits can be dealt with but if it's severely yellowed it might be a lost cause.

-Tip 3: Shirts/sweaters up to the light to see if there are any holes, for me typically if there is a hole larger then a dime I don't take it, smaller holes can be patched and/or stitched up

-Tip 3: Make friends with your local tailor, you should do this any way but when you're buying clothes from a thrift store the difference between it looking like $10 pair of jeans and $150 is some skillful tailoring. I like to go buy (Thrift Store Cost) + 25% original cost < Original cost of the item.

-Tip 4 WASH THE FUCKING ITEM! Get it dry cleaned, toss it in the washer, blast it with the hottest steam you can, just do something with it. It's 2nd hand so you don't know what condition it came in (last person could've run a marathon and donated right off their back), for all you know it could have bed bugs on'em or be covered in old piss. I know it sounds basic but I hear of some of my dumbass friends who buy some shirts, then complain next week that they have some sort of weird rash.

-Tip 5: Different neighborhoods have different styles. Go to the hood and you might find a bunch of old Fubu jeans but go to a nice white neighborhood and you might find some decent looking Gap jeans. Find out when the busiest times are for donations and if that store runs any specials. Get friendly with the staff so they'll hold items for you as well.
