It's a misguided attempt to create their own distinctive design language.

They used to make much more understated, utilitarian pieces, but that didn't make them as much money as selling oversized, polished steel to white BMW-driving Persians.

Pictured, a Breitling Aerospace from the mid-90's. It's a thin, titanium, multifunction watch that actual pilots actually wear unlike the "pilot watches" that Breitling sells today. (The model is still popular among pilots to this day.)

With a thicker sweater, there's not much in-between. You can go for a bold, oversized watch like a Panerai that will stand out and cause the sleeve to stack up against it, or a thin, watch that will slip under the sleeve. A medium watch (like a 36mm Datejust) will just get overwhelmed.

To be honest, I'm looking for a versatile watch for that I can wear for all situations at the $500 range. I want something that will fit with metal bands, leather straps, be casual, be dressy if need be. I was looking at a Seiko Sarb033 but the dial is just too small for my wrist at 38mm, so I figure a diver is probably better for me.

The sarb would be a good choice, I'm about to purchase it when I have my funds in order. I'm a touch concerned it might be a but small for me as well. Straps don't really mean shit anyway, budget some extra money to get a quality leather strap if you don't like the jubilee. I think any color would work honestly, just google leather straps on blue dial watches for inspiration. You could try black with blue stitching like the SARB065 strap or a lighter brown color or even get blue leather if you want to really match the dial. I think something a little textured and rough would keep it from being too dressy and would play off the textured dial nicely.

There's lots of places that sell watch straps at any price point, and if you don't mind paying a bit more and waiting a few weeks you can even order custom straps where you choose every little detail to your specifications.

There's Deep Blue, they have some models that use ETA movements, but I don't know if those particular models have tritium. Also I think their smallest is 44mm or something absurd.

I'm graduating and my rich dad says he'll buy me a watch in the range of 5000 euros. I'm a watch enthusiast and currently sporting a vintage Omega seamaster from the 60's. I'd definitely want another Omega, just debating between the new Omega Master Co-Axial 300, a Seamaster Professional Ceramic (pic related) and an Aqua Terra in blue teak (not the master co-axial as I dislike the new bracelet and the non-framed date window).

Opinions? Experiences on any of the watches? The price on any of them isn't really an issue, so I don't really care which one would be the best bang for the buck so to speak.

My only experience with Omega is trying on the basic Seamaster Professional and the Speedmaster Professional which I bought. With the Seamaster I can't really put into words why but it just didn't really do it for me. The Speedmaster though I absolutely love.

>> No.9770610

I had the same experience for many months, couldn't really tell what was wrong in the SMP - it just looked a bit off, the hands, the strange bezel, the bond bracelet. But the last month or so the design really started to click with me, especially after I tried the ceramic model on at an AD - there's just something rugged and great about it, and I love the glossy face. Too bad I also love the Aqua Terra almost equally, with its slightly dressier appeal.

I thought about the Speedy for a long time, but finally I decided on not getting it, mainly because of the poor water resistance. I live in a coastal city in Europe and I love to swim, go sailing et cetera, and a watch with only 50m WR just doesn't really suit my lifestyle.

The vintage Seamaster I own is in very good condition and a very thin steel model with gold indices. I keep it on a black leather strap, so it is suited for dressier occasions (with a suit etc).

If you're looking to get a full set.

You do not want to buy a Datejust and put it on a leather band unless you also have a time machine to a few years ago when that was cool. (Now, a leather band simply means you could not afford a vintage piece with a bracelet.)

Secondly, an homage is basically a legal fake and they never look good anyway.

Thirdly, don't buy fakes. Even the best reps out there have glaring tells, no matter what the rep factories tell you. Plus, wearing a fake Rolex is seriously nigger-tier.

You can get a good quality, Rolex Datejust, a real one, for around a thousand dollars. They are so common, you can drive an extremely hard bargain with people. You can do whatever you want, but you are probably unaware that vintage Rolex is probably the most cut-throat scene in the watch game. There are plenty of head-only, beat-to-shit, full-of-fake-parts, DJs out there that are all being worn on leather straps because the guy selling them to lightweight fools sold the bracelet separately to some other fool. (A good vintage bracelet with little stretch is worth anywhere from $500.- upwards.)

A DJ on leather was cool a few years ago, as a brief fad no different from the "putting a NATO on a solid gold dress watch" fad, but now it's gone back to the old line of "this was the only entry into the Rolex world I could afford".

1st point: let correct myself. There no strap trends for people who are genuinely interested in watches as opposed to people who use them as way to flaunt their money(lets be honest, modern Rolex and Panerai catters mostly to the latter)

2nd point: an entry level Rolex is still a rolex : its just as robust, well made and classic as higher end rolexes.

3rd point: i actually think leather straps look better than metal bands in general. Almost every Rolex comes with a metal band, it gets a little boring imo, a leather strap is a welcomed alternative.

You called?

PS you're an idiot. Datejusts, like many other dress watches, look great on leather whether or not it's currently hip with some WUS faggots or whoever it is that you're referring to. There's plenty of good homages, especially the ones that add their own twist to a classic design and stand as good designs in their own right. No design is ever completely original and unique anyway. I have pretty mixed feelings towards fakes, but if you like wearing one for the sake of it and not because you're trying to convince people that your fake Rolex is real then that doesn't seem particularly niggerly to me. And people who show up and say HURR JUST SPEND 10 TIMES YOUR STATED BUDGET ON THIS BECAUSE I SAID SO AND YOU'RE POOR AND STUPID are the worst kind of asshole, ask Sieg.

>an entry level Rolex is still a rolex : its just as robust, well made and classic as higher end rolexes.

Yes and no. Older, and particularly cheaper, Rolexes often have very dodgy service histories. Buying an 8,000 Ferrari means it probably has all sorts of problems, and the same is true for cheap watches that would otherwise be expensive.

Mechanical watches need service (older ones need servicing more frequently) and that means finding spare parts because, and this is important to note, Rolex will not generally service watches that were made before 1980 unless they have particular collector's value, which your beater Air King won't.
(On top of that, an old Rolex is simply not as well-made as a new Rolex because production methods and technologies have advanced significantly.)

So, buy the cheapest possible Rolex you can find and don't be surprised if it dies and you're parts'ing it out on eBay within a few months to other assholes trying to keep their Frankensteined beaters running another day.

Not necessarily true. You just have to be very, very specific about what they can and cannot replace. If it's old, they actually have a vintage department for service, they don't just give it to the same guys who do a hundred 2824's a day.

They are aware of how much their old pieces are worth and how much that value can be ruined with replacement parts. They also know how much their brand is strengthened my a strong vintage market, so they respect the customer.

My father's 1969 Seamaster had a beautiful creamy lume on the dial and hands. He was very specific about them not replacing the dial or hands, or polishing the case, he just wanted a new crystal, gaskets, and have the movement serviced. That's exactly what they gave him. It still looks like a 45 year old watch, but it runs like new.

In the case of anon with the Connie, even if it were in minty-fresh perfect condition with boxes and papers, it would only worth about eight hundred dollars, so there's no point in sending it to Omega. Just let it run until it dies and pawn it off to someone else looking for a vintage watch for short money.
