SUPREME?!?!?!?

Seriously? What the fuck is so great about supreme?
First off, I have never owned, wore, or felt Supreme clothing so correct me if Im wrong. It seems like all it is are basic cotton shirts with the logo slapped on. I wear a lot of higher end designer stuff so at least Im getting quality for my money. Is supreme even good quality? Or do fans just tell themselves it is to justify it. And yeah I know rappers n shit popularized it but damn. Seriously, anyone I see wearing Supreme instantly comes off as a fuckboy bitch following a trend, idk maybe im being too judgmental.

40 posts and no legitimate answers in this thread?

Supreme is not new; it's had firm roots in the New York streetwear scene since 1994.

With how mainstream it is, you'd expect to to have gone stale like Bape or Stussy, but it still remains popular.

Why?

A. they manage some degree of exclusivity (they keep supply low enough that people still wait in line/online for drops, when they could easily just make huge amounts and avoid that)
B. they're doing collabs with the biggest names in the fashion industry and very very few streetwear brands are large enough to do that. (eg. Nike, North Face, smaller companies like Undercover, CDG shirt)
C. they're really not afraid to stand out, even though i personally dislike their designs (see fireman jacket etc.)

Supreme is utter shit. The only reason exclusivity has gotten them anywhere is because they're continuing to do what they've always done, which was successful in the past and is only successful today BECAUSE it's exclusive. There is hardly any originality anymore.

They only get these collabs because their popularity serves as an avenue for exposure and it's a good business decision because it's profit plus "street cred" for the same audience that's buying their shit plus those buying the brands with whom they collaborate. It's not the other way around - people like Nike, Undercover, etc aren't knocking on their door, begging for the collab. Again, it's a mutually beneficial ploy done out of exclusivity.

The only thing they do to stand out is troll everybody with things like coffee mugs and baseball bats. That's stupid as shit. They don't deserve any credit for furthering fashion or creativity to any capacity within the last decade, if not more.

They're literally just trolls capitalizing on hype with close to zero originality and definitely do not make any contribution to fashion as a whole

I'm sure there are brands that you are aware of that make things that you think are original, yet wouldn't wear yourself and thus do not "follow" them in any sense of desiring their work. And in the case of Supreme, how can't you? Even casual followers of fashion are subjected to seeing everywhere. If you go on blogs, it's there - you don't have to actively seek it out

Been Trill and Diamond Supply Company both are fucking trash tier. They are low tier streetwear and don't do anything interesting; they have no interesting cuts, even the screenprinting is bland and uninspired. It's just brandspamming.

HBA on the other hand actually understands how to pull off nice screenprinting, but on top of that they actually have some really interesting showpieces (think haute coture), examples include the Asymetrical Blazer and the laser cut plastic collars, as well as 'higher tier' streetwear (high end ready to wear) ranging from the Astronaut prints and illusion blocks to the 'science-y' prints such as the isopach chart or even the Aphex Twin shirt.

B-but Supreme has been around for 21 years. It was cool from day one, a little less cool but still pretty god damn cool in the late 90's up to the mid 2000's. Between 2006-2009 they started getting alot more hype bco slamxhype, hypebeast etc. This brought on alot of new customers. People with little or no resembelance to any of Supremes original customer groups. Around this time (2009 or 10?) Supreme also started selling online for the first time. Then Tyler went bat shit with the bogos. Come 2011-12 and fucking Raekwon is all over tumblr, Lady Gaga and Kate Moss then happened, fake-Safari Camp hype (leopard brim), morons on Instagram are putting boxlogos over their eyes (why?)... and it's still getting worse.

However, thats just 3-4 really bad years out of a pretty epic 21 year old history. Also, Supreme is still just doing what they have always done. What makes them look bad today isn't their clothes style or quality, it's not the way they market them, it's not how and what culture they reference and what they are saying. It's their new retarded customers and all their retarded instagram pics. All the fake shit has also devalued Supreme as a brand (think LV and Burberry).

tl;dr fucking Tyler

Full fontal nudity and borderline cheese pizza pictures on t-shirts while not giving a fuck. Selling what are basicly LV and Gucci bootlegs openly in their store …not for a quick buck but as a tounge in cheek nod to Canal Street and the whole culture of bootlegging luxury brands. And you know those Lady Gaga pictures? Imagine if Powell Peralta did that with Madonna in 1986.

Now thats a pretty god damn epic CV for someone who started out as a skateboard shop, no? The fact that a bunch of fuccboys and morons are jerking off to box logos today doesn’t change any of this. It sadly DOES change how Supreme is viewed by a lot of people - but it’s not really Supremes fault. I am sure they enjoy the extra cash, they seem to have finally accepted their new position. But in the long run the wrong kind of hype (which we are seeing now) will hurt the brand.

>almost no advertising
Except for in Japan, there have hardly been any advertising in normal media for 21 years. You have to respect that. They used to run ads in Big Brother …that’s a good look! Supporting a local skateboard blog with banner ads is nice too. Poster-ad’s in Sneeze Mag, the box logo on the cover of Relax and a full Supreme issue of Arkitip are also in very good taste.

Larry's old work is maybe his best defence. In the book Tulsa from 1971 he documents young drug addicts in Tulsa which are around his own age at the time - late teens and early 20's. It's exactly the same as most of his movies and photoseries. Grainy snapshots of fringe youth culture, with lots of bare skin. Maybe not as sexualized as his later work - but he's had the same voice since day 1.

Now that might mean that he was allways a creep. I don't know. But I choose to believe that it's only a result of his style/voice, the subject matters and to some degree a calculated and wanted shock effect from his part.

If he really was a pedo I'm sure someone would have said something at some point. The cast of his movies doesn't seem to have a problem with him at all.

I shit you not, this story is 100% true

>used to work at a bar / club kind of thing in a party heavy environment at night
>usually met a lot of people and got talking when I was on my cig breaks outside
>some 18-19 year old guy is there, he's had a few to drink but is definitely not that drunk
>starts asking me questions like what music I like
>then he says "what clothes do you like? what's your style like?"
>before I can answer he says "I like skate clothes, look, this t-shirt I'm wearing is of a brand called Supreme" and he shows me the tag inside
>just looked like a plain white t-shirt on the outside
>"it was expensive but I love Supreme"
>asks me about my hobbies
>then he says "I play football but I wish I could skateboard. That's the dream right there, I'd love to learn one day" and tells me about this for a few minutes
>finish cig and go back inside
>mfw

I already knew about Supreme before this happening and what kind of people buy it, but this was unreal. This story is my general opinion of Supreme.
