I have long hair. I usually just brush it while I'm in the shower. I'm pretty tenderheaded too so I just hold the ends really tight and brush them out, then I move my hands up a few inches and do it again. It still kind of hurts up towards the top but there's no escaping that.

Before I rinse my conditioner, I hold it tight, (I have a massive side cut, so it's not too much volume, you might want to part it in two and detangle half at a time) and detangle from the bottom up, an inch at a time.
