Don't wear metal band shirts or wristbands or leather jackets. It's pretty easy to not look like a metalhead.

Also don't cut your hair into a really stupid style, wear fishnets or makeup, and don't wear excessively adorned, overly baggy clothing. It's pretty easy to not look goth.

I'm long and skinny, never wear band shirts, I wear skinny jeans which I love (even tho my legs may be too thin for them). On top I wear everything as long as it is white, grey or black. I get confused for a metalhead all the fucking time. I do wear leather boots from time to time... And my hair is in bad shape. I am taking good care of it tho. I may buy some supplements for it.

As you said, your hair is in bad shape, that's probably the reason. I wear all black/dark colors most of the time when I'm not in workwear and I never get assumed as a metal head, and my hair falls on my shoulders. I do get a lot of compliments on it though and I do have a beard, but even without the beard no one ever assumed I liked metal.

I'm trying to go for that look myself but I'm still in the service so long hair is a no go. Plus it's hot as balls where I live.

just go minimalist and avoid tacky exaggerated accessories like metal jewelry and excessive leather. No spikes, leather cuffs, patchy leather studded jackets, trenchcoats, thick or long necklaces, excess zippers and buckles or anything that looks like you might find in a Hot Topic or fetish store.

and get rid of band tees and any tacky graphic tees with skulls or edgy designs too.

Yah it makes sense. Do you dress according to that "vibe" when you go out? Kind of tribal/hippy if you feel me, maybe older looking shirts, that kind of "lazy but on purpose" style? Maybe with some maroon colors?

I think that would work well if you prefer your hair being down like that, style is the only thing I can think of for getting people to associate your hair with that.

Here's a bad picture of something casual i might wear. I've been looking for some cool native american inspired clothing. Couldn't really find anything I like. I always have trouble finding sweaters (and other tops) I like, thus the lame hoody..

Like I said, I do like wearing leather boots and skinny jeans, which are probably 'metal' looking...

Why do you want more grey? Like I said I think you could benefit from some more color. I'm on the west coast so we have lots of native american stuff here and I've bought some pretty cool things in mexico and south america, if you have access to something like that.

Only really native american-like thing I could see added on to this outfit (if that's what you mean) would be a poncho. Do you ever wear baggier sweaters or is that not your style? I wear them a lot, I think they look pretty good. I'm assuming you're pretty tall.

I'm from Belgium, so not much stuff like that around here. I don't mind colors in my outfit as long as they're subtle. I'm not a big fan of Ponchos, But I do like and wear baggier sweaters!
