I have all the Russian prison tattoo books that came out with a couple years back. The one i have is copied from a guy that was sent to the gulag in the 50's for theft of state property. It didn't have any specific meaning, it was just an interesting design I liked. No one would be able to tell you it means anything because it doesn't. Just a skeleton holding a glass of wine.

the pommel of the knife isn't a circle, it's off center, so are the circles on the ends of the guard,the grip of the knife isn't straight, the thumb on the top hand is too small, the joints on the lower hand are wrong, and the fingers are too long, and the sections of the fingers are disproportionate (esp the thumb)

the stitching on the sleeve of the top hand detracts from the line shading of he hands, and should have been left as framing space like the blade was.

I understand that but what Im curious as to is just how well it will look in 10 years time. When you look at tattoo styles which age well like American Traditional and Irezumi they tend to avoid relying on small crisp lines and dots for detail like you see woodcut/ engraving.

I do not have any Im afraid and this is still an area I am looking into myself. Some of the general principles I have picked up is that small tattoos tattoos with a great deal of detail are a bad idea and getting roughed up majorly by the natural fading process. Hence detailed tattoos generally need to be larger.

As far as placement it depends a lot on size of the tattoo as well as your body (not factoring in pain of course) and is one of the reasons why its important to look at actual examples of tattoos rather than drawings because not only is the contrast very different but pictures look very different when applied to the natural curves and lumps of the human body.

For instance the groove of your spine or the gap in your pecs can distort pictures which aren't designed around that.

Several Symbols out of "The Children of Húrin", in my opinion the best book ever written.
The first part is the Dragon Helmet of Dor-Lomín, that Túrin wore when he and Beleg Longbow defended the wilderless after he fled Doriath after killing an elf who made fun of him. The arrow-symbols are for his friend Beleg Longbow.

The Tears are for Nienor Niniel (who was called Tear-maiden) and the AT/T/T/A is for "A Túrin Turambar, turun ambartanen", Túrins Grave-Inscription, Master of Fate, mastered by fate, as he died after he finally thought that he had freed himself from his curse.
It´s a fantastic book, but it´s incredibly saddening, as everything that´s happening is basically that a god hates a human and makes him watch as his whole family is cursed and lives through years of horror and torture until they finally kill themselves.

I actually do know a lot about tattoos, my uncle owns his own shop and iv read up on everything from Maori tattoo culture and methods to the origins of tattooing in western society with Norman Collins to modern design.

The only area of tattooing I know fuck all about is the chink stuff as it doesn't appeal to me. I know the basics of how modern design started there and spread to sailors through Norman Collins but that's pretty much it.

The issue stopping me from getting tattoos is that I can't decide on a style I like most.

Some days I like how bold and solid old school traditional tattoos look. It looks like a "real" tattoo and it's pretty much a style that was made for tattooing, not an art style that became a tattoo. I also like how it's like a bunch of different spaced out tattoos, and not one big tattoo like realism or Japanese styles are. The downside is that I I'm scared that one day I wont like the designs anymore, plus it's a pretty common style amongst these wannabe sailor tumblr kids with beards. There's only a handfull of different "authentic" designs so it's not very original.

Other days I love how fresh and smooth black and grey realism looks. I like how detailed it can look when done right. It isn't as bold or "blatant" as traditional, which is both a good and bad thing for me. If you can think of anything, you can probably get it done in this style, which is cool because there's more freedom with the designs. What I don't like is that it can make you look dirty if there's too many shadows, and a lot of times you can't tell what it is unless you're up close, it just looks like a dull blob of grey ink. Again, I'm scared I'll get bored of this style.

Then there's other styles like woodcut which is original and I absolutely love the medieval themes, but at the same time it's kind of meh.

I know you might say I should just try different styles, but I hate how awkward mixing styles is. I want to only focus on one, but I'm still unsure which I want for the rest of my life.

on the topic of japanese tattoos, im copping 3/4 sleeves on both arms next fall. I'm unsure if it would look better capped off at the shoulders or if they both went on to fill a chest plate.
