Manga is incredibly popular in Japan but anime sales are more reliable on the obsessive fans who buy a lot of merchandise for series they like, and are willing to buy the DVDs for special bonuses like voice actor event tickets and uncensored fanservice scenes. A series is considered to be selling ok if its pre-orders are around 6k DVDs, and a success when it sells around 15-20k, which seems very paltry when you compared it to regular film sales or manga that have sold literal millions of volumes over the years. The really big-deal anime like Evangelion and Bakemonogatari are the ones that were able to break into the mainstream audience and have abnormally high sales that other series rarely reach.

Except for Gundam SEED for god knows why.
