Reviving thread.
To anyone that said to cop cetaphil you're my fucking hittas, I got the cleanser and I've only been using that for the moment, after just 2 uses my skin feels sooo much better.

Before my skin was kind of blotchy, bumpy and oily and now it's smooth, even, and even the coloration has changed.
Thank you /fa/ I love you, we're all gonna make it.

I really hate this place. You would think that it would be one of the more usefull subreddits, but it's really just unsolicited advice about sunscreen and stupid before/after threads.

AM: Wash with Boscia Detoxifying cleanser & Boscia charcoal sponge, shave with Acqua Di Parma gel and Merkur Futur DE (w/ Feather blades), finish with Acqua Di Parma balm. If I showered too hot, I use Boscia Hydration gel or Voyage d'Hermès balm, but the latter rarely because it's not that great.

PM: Biore charcoal cleanser, Anthony astringent pads, Boscia nightly hydration, and C&C Persa-Gel 10 for spots.

MISC: Charcoal masks every weekend, Biore pore strips every 3 days.

I dont have any particular problem, and I dont ave greasy/oily skin but I do get the occasional 2 or 3 spots that just take an age to dissapear.

My routine of facewashing has just been some cheap shit branded facewash in the morning and thats it but now I want to get intoa proper regular skincare regime.

nah. for developed pimples i pop and apply benzoyl peroxide. Gone in the morning. Assuming you got all the sebum out.

Best skincare tip I know is that I would never let water touch my face for more than 5 seconds and have it cold as hell. If you drain your pores of oil it will cause the dead skin and bacteria to harden up.

Imma go to my doctor for accutane, if he doesnt give me any I am just going to go on a low dose and buy it online.

My pores are pretty much the only thing keeping me from being 9/10

Applying an fairly powerful oxidizer to broken skin is generally a no-no, as it hurts the sensitive exposed tissues. It is very likely to slow wound healing, and possibly aggravate scarring. Instead, clean with some kind of anti-bacterial solution (without alcohol) and put on some minor wound tape/cotton plaster/hydrocolloid plaster (if anything at all).

I use the body shop tea-tree facial cleanser, followed by their toner, and a moisturizer with sun screen for both AM and PM.

I spot treat pimples with tea-tree oil and occasionally use the bodyshop seaweed ionic clay mask.

I'm not really sure what I'm doing, my skin seems to be doing better since I started this but its still a bit blotchy and red, I don't break out nearly as much though. Alright pay attention pimply greasy fuckbois.

The perfect regime is as follows:
x2 a day mild facial wash (cetaphil or similar hypoallergenic facial wash brand)
x1 a week exfoliation (chemical based only) which for me is neutrogena facial wash with salycic acid, this removes dead skin and dirt in pores.
Drinking plenty of water
Getting plenty of omega 3, which has proven to reduce inflammation, which allows you to have a dirty grimey face without your skin reacting, getting angry and causing you all those ugly fucking pimples. (Will not work for hormonal acne, cause well duh that's caused by hormones)
Vit C serum (homemade, go do some research there's plenty of guides online)

That's it, try it if you don't believe me, I'm a former sufferer of acne and greasy skin, I work as a production assistant on television and film shoots so I'm usually fucking dirty and sweaty at the end of the day. Just a small tip:
You should typically use BHA (salicylic acid) every night

and also, you should not use salicylic acid facial cleansers

because it needs to stay on your skin for ~30 min and absorb to have a significant effect

if you're using a face wash, it's only on your skin for 1 minute at most and the difference is very small

I suggest you use pic related from Paula's Choice because it is formulated well in terms of pH and doesn't have any weird stuff like alcohol (like Stridex pads do)

Finding out what side effects that can arise from Accutane treatment is as easy as googling "Accutane side effects". Bear in mind that you don't have to experience any, even though most medications carry with them some kind of very common side effect. It's fairly common for people to confuse open comedones ("blackheads") with sebaceous filaments. The stuff in the green area is predominantly sebaceous filaments, while there are some blackheads in other places (marked blue). This is before/after a layman OCM treatment.

Sebaceous filaments (mostly just fat + skin residues covering a strand of hair) are in general much softer (and lighter) than blackheads. They can rather easily be squeezed out of the pilosebaceous ducts. After extraction, sebaceous filaments will reform after a couple of weeks. They can be a bit irritating. Certain keratolytic substances will make them a bit less visible, as well as OCM (as seen in the pic). Salicylic acid should work better, from a solubility perspective, than common AHAs like glycolic acid or lactic acid.

... As well as putting you at a risk for hypervitaminosis A. 30,00-40,000 IU of vitamin A is 3-4 times the RDI (assuming the most common vit A supplement - retinyl palmitate). Be safe.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypervitaminosis_A

http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminA-HealthProfessional/

Oily skin, when caused by hyperactive sebaceous glands (things in your skin producing sebum - your skin fats), is called "seborrhea". That doesn't have to be your specific condition, though.

I'd recommend that you try washing your face less often, with a milder cleanser (even an diluted one), as well as using a water-based moisturizer. If you're in your teens then your (potentially) hyperactive sebaceous glands could be caused by hormone levels. Different kinds of kaolin clay /may/ act drying, in regards to oil, on the skin. It seems to work for some users, but there hasn't been any studies on the substance yet.

I would try changing some things in the way you treat your skin, and then simply ask your doctor for advice.

I'll repost something I wrote a while back.

Re. dark circles under eyes:
----
There are two main kinds of dark circles under eyes ("periorbital"- around the eye):
- Those caused by highly visible superficial blood vessels
- Those caused by local excess skin melanin (hyperpigmentation)

Re. the first kind of dark circles around eyes: What you have under your eyes are red-blue blood vessels that for some reason has become more visible.

Sleep deprivation may increase the prominence of dark circles below the eyes, as the area becomes irritated. Puffy eyelids from lack of sleep can help darken the area below the eyelids. Sleep deprivation can lead to pallor (pale skin), which can highlight the unaffected blood vessels under the eyes.

Being underweight can make the blood vessels more visible, as the skin above it becomes thinner. Rubbing the eyes, or making the eye area irritated in general, can contribute to increased blood flow in the area.

tldr: sleep well. check for allergies. gain weight. do not irritate the area. use make-up. check for anemia. and if you're still bothered by it: see a doctor (dermatologist)
----
For hyperpigmentation, I wrote a response to a guy:
>What you have /are/ periorbital dark circles, but yours seems to be related to an excess of pigmentation in the area rather than overly visible blood vessels. What you seem to have is called "periorbital hyperpigmentation".
>Without intervention, the pigmentation often increases slowly over time. Treatment options include chemical dermabrasion, laser, filler injection. Sunscreen is good to prevent further pigmentation in the area.
>The quick beauty fix: BB cream with sunscreen.
>Actually fixing it: possibly by the use of chemical dermabrasion/chemical peeling. Ask your doctor/a dermatologist.
----
To see what you /may/ have, google "periorbital dark circles" as well as "periorbital hyperpigmentation". Hyperpigmentation is more common for people with darker skin.

Let me know if it helps!

Cum, applied topically twice daily. Peel it off once it has dried, like Patrick Bateman. Highly exfoliating.

Failing that - salicylic acid (ish 2% solution in water), various alpha-hydroxy acids, "oil cleansing method", proper mechanical extraction. Recurring blackheads often require extended chemical treatment (weeks), after they've been removed mechanically.

Stridex Pads (max strength, without alcohol) is popular, as well as Paula's Choice 2% SA.

Nice dubs.
"After shave" is a very vague term. If it acts more as an astringent or not depends on what's in it. Witch hazel is a rather effective astringent, but there are plenty of other substances that works in the same way. What's your purpose of using astringents?

Well, if your skin is problem-free then you probably do not need any extra products. I wouldn't even recommend a cleanser if you're not bothered by acne (your skin might change appearance for the better after a wash/exfoliation, though). Moisturizer and sunblock will reduce and prevent various signs of aging, so I guess that's all you really need unless you want to invest a lot of money into your skin.

19 y/o male here

My facial skin is always flaky and a bit red.

If I rub my face I can see little white flakes fall off all the time, and it disgusts me when I get them on my dark clothes. Eyebrows and facial hair give them off too.

The redness I've had in my upper cheeks since childhood which isn't a problem, but on my forehead is where it's annoying which only cropped up in the last few years. Makes me look like I have panda eyes the way the redness circles them.

I guess hair is part of skin right? I'm not sure if this is dandruff or lice (probably not lice), but my hair always has little white flakes in it. Kinda like the same from my face.

Washing routines

water every night and morning, cetaphil cleanser every 3 nights

Well, yes, the cleanser works exfoliating to some degree. Acne-prone skin could require a dedicated exfoliator though - such as salicylic acid, mandelic acid, lactic acid for example - since excess skin entering the "pilosebaceous ducts" can contribute to acne. If you find that your new moisturizer and lotion doesn't cut it for you, then you can try something with AHA/BHA.

Well, it sounds like a whitehead that has become infected and formed an "abscess", and inflaming the tissue around it. If I would have something like that I would lance it and drain it (aka "popping").

I've written about how to do it somewhat safely here:
>>/fa/thread/S9336061#p9336197
>>/fa/thread/S9336061#p9336212

If the infection is too close to your eyes, or at an otherwise sensitive spot (or one that is hard to reach), ask a friend or a local nurse for help. Some gauze/plaster can be put on the wound after extraction and cleaning. Be aware of the risk of spreading the infection.

Let me know how it goes.

Lancing is an unnecessarily scary word actually... It's generally not a matter of "digging" in it. It's generally just a matter of making a small and shallow hole with a very sharp needle, and then force the gunk out through there. Only clinicians make actual incisions.

This usually makes the inflammation subside. It's a standard treatment for abscesses, since they rarely heal on their own. As long as it's not too big/deep you should be able to take care of it yourself. It would be optimal to do it once it has formed a head, though.

All things are very hard to diagnose over the Internet. Read up beforehand, ask a doc, I'm not a doc, your own responsibility, et c, et c.

Great post. I'll expand on that.

>>9449274
You should use a cleanser that is not soap, that is non-irritating and with a somewhat skin-neutral pH. Use a cleanser based on only synthetic detergents ("syndet"). Not all of these synthetic cleansers are good, but most of them are.

Based on "Irritant effect of cleansers - Correlation between pH and irritant effect of cleansers marketed for dry skin" (Baranda, et al), and some other derma literature, I've found that some of the most non-drying, non-irritating and recommendable cleansers are:

- Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar
- Avene Cold Cream Emollient soap-free cleansing bar
- Dove: White Dove (bar), Dove Baby (bar), Dove Pink (bar), Dove Liquid Cleanser for Hands.

The above works for all parts of the skin, way better than most other things you've put on your skin. CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser (for the face) as well as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser are two great options.

Just a bit of advice for Pimples. Use sudocream at night as a face mask as it is a zinc cream and helps with redness as well as getting rid of acne.
Have been using this trick for a few months and absolutely love the results.

Hey 18 year old teen with acne from Sydney, what moisturizers and shaving cream do you guys recommend?

I started moisturizing with a nivea for men sensitive skin moisturizer sample a few days ago before I just used water because I was misinformed that all moisturizers cause acne.

my current shaving cream has alcohol and I heard thats pre bad for acne but I have to keep using it because my hair grows fast af

Also any improvements I can make for my routine? I'm just raelly confused about what skin care products to use because of the fear it will irritate my pimples and shit

AM: Shower, wash with Cleanser (Ella Bache Gel Purete Demaquillant) and then I apply Nivea for men sensitive moisturiser

PM: Wash face with cleanser, moisturise and apply Benzoyl peroxide

Yo, I got that there seborrhea + perioral dermatitis combo. The 'seb isn't that bad, it mostly reasults in my nose being all red, and combined with sebaceous filaments it looks kinda splotchy. I'm taking meds (tetracyclines) for the perioral derm, but if it goes anything like the last time it's probably going to re-surface when the meds are done.

Anyone got some general advice/tips for this combo? My skins pretty ok right now, but a bit splotchy and I get whiteheads a lot.

>Implying that isn't doubling oil production in the skin

Just buy a gentle cleanser like cetaphil, cleanse at most once a day or even every other day.

You can rinse with clean water if you have too.

Buy some benzoyl peroxide and use it on developing spots and like that other guy said get some anti bacterial cleaner, I just use hand sanitizer and clean out any spots you pop.

I had acne until my 20's and tried everything, but doing less and leaving my face alone is what cured it eventually.

You can probably find some videos on Youtube. When I used my Salicylic acid peel this is what I did:
>Cleanse face gently
>Wait to dry completely
>Apply thin layer of peel on face
>Wait 30 seconds (After the first time, you can increase to 1 minute, but do so carefully)
>Rinse gently with cold water all over face

cetaphil because it's not soap and is gentle as fuck. oil cleansers are also good because instead of scrubbing away the oil/debris on your face with soap, it will bond with the oils on your face and be carried away in the water.

Generally, yes. It depends on concentration, mainly. That specific formulation appears to work very well for many people with sensitive skin, judging by the interviews. Bear in mind that that specific cleanser was not tested for irritant rating in the study I mentioned above.

>cleanse at most once a day or even every other day.
Cleaning needs vary across individuals.

>You can rinse with clean water if you have too.
Water does not effectively remove dirt, fats, excess (possibly pathogenic) bacteria, and excess skin in uppermost layers - compared to various kinds of detergents.

>I just use hand sanitizer and clean out any spots you pop.
Broken skin should not be exposed to alcohol. Use chlorhexidine or some other mild general antibacterial cream/fluid.

If you have trouble-free skin, then there's not that much required to do with it. A basic cleansing is generally recommended to prevent acne though, but I'd say that the most important thing for you (if you don't have problems with acne) would be to use a moisturizer daily - preferably together with a sunblock. There's also good combinations of the two.

If I would have completely trouble-free skin, then I would only use moisturizer (twice daily) and sunblock once daily - and occasionally cleanse as much I felt was needed. As my aging progressed, I would start using all kinds of funny substances.

Regular exfoliation, or lightening soaps if its on your body. It's probably best not to manually exfoliate if you are using a lightening soap already since it can really dry out your skin. It's going to be a gradual process, so don't expect big results overnight.

Fellow palebro here.
If you want to get pale look into Korean and Japanese skincare products.
I know with Japanese products there are a lot of "whitening" cleansers and moisturisers.
Stay out of the sun as well and if you go outside make sure you're wearing sunscreen.
Personally I prefer physical suncreens because a lot of chemical UV blockers act as endocrine disruptors.

at the moment the best protection available would be a high SPF sunscreen with Tinosorb M/Tinosorb S or Mexoryl which has been stabilized. Also some fancy antioxidiants would be a good add for chemical sunscreens.
The EU has regulated this:
"there is a requirement to provide the consumer with a minimum level of UVA protection in relation to the SPF. This should be a "UVA PF" of at least 1/3 of the SPF to carry the UVA seal."
While the US is fucked and won't care about any regulations.

Best way to beat acne as a male is to control your inflammation and hormones. Which means plenty or ALA/DHA/EPA aka omega 3 fatty acids. Eat less omega 6 fatty acids which promote inflammation.

Zinc helps with repairing skin and reducing serum DHT in the body. Supplementing is fine but don't overdo it as it competes with other minerals and might cause defiencies in them.

Cleansing with mild stuff like cetaphil once a day is enough if you're not a greaseball

Ofc do not smoke and do not skip sunblock

Even skin tone can be achieved with vit C pills and topical vit c serum

Try not to resort to accutane or anti biotics as the first measure, as it might fuck things up in your body

Ok, so it looks like baking soda is used as a neutralizer but I still wouldn't use it on your face, it's not required. As for rubbing alcohol, I'd say absolutely not, way to drying. Take a look at this post.

The paper they sent me said to wipe your skin with rubbing alcohol to remove any oil and whatnot before applying the peel.

This also says you can do it once every 7 days? The paper they sent says once every 2 weeks for 20%, 3 weeks for 30 and 40%, and 4 for 50%.

I imagine a cleanser would suffice, then wait for it to dry.

>>9457343
I've heard of people doing them weekly and having no problems, see how your face reacts. Just starting out I would say 2 weeks would be fine.

Get some Bioderma Photoderm max Ultra Fluid. No white cast but it does leave your face shiny and that's easily fixed by layering a mattifying primer after it's soaked in for 15 minutes.

Use a chemical exfoliant, like salicylic acid. Cerave SA works like a fucking charm. Physically exfoliating your arms and legs with a scrub brush a few times a week helps too. Don't slack off on this routine or else it'll reappear. I swear by this method and my KP is almost unnoticeable now.

Yes! However, the fragrance may irritate your skin if you're using the US version of the product. You could try Eucerin moisturizing cream if that happens because it's very rich, but also unscented.

Can I do OCM/double cleansing with just normal Cetaphil cream?

>> No.9461740

Totally clueless but I only have a little acne and a cleanser, exfoliate and moisturizer are the most important right?

I was think cetaphil for the cleanser and benzoyl peroxide for the exfoliater.

I need a good moisturizer though.

Try a mild and non-drying cleanser (see >>9449732), together with a water-based and "light" face moisturizer is your best bet. If there's acne, you could add some BHA-based and ethanol-free toner. You may be interested in various products containing "astringents".

If you're considering benzoyl peroxide again, try one that has a low concentration (~2.5%) BP.

I know that light therapy (specific wavelengths) has shown that it can decrease acne but that mask looks like something from seen off tv so...

If I were you I'd just return it and go to a dermatologist to get it done. I did awhile ago and it was awesome, don't remember if the girl I went to was a dermatologist or a cosmetologist practicing under one. It was a 30 minute session and it was like getting a face massage. She'd dim the lights and play nature music and massage my face with this exfoliant that was supposed to help and then did the light therapy, then massage my face again with lotion. I got a ton of free samples because the dermatologist formulated her own cleansers, lotions, etc and those worked really well.

I honestly don't remember if the light therapy helped my acne at all but it was a great experience. Ditch the mask and do it at the derm if you have the cash.
