Grand Seiko isn't the top of Seiko's range, that's Credor. Think of it as Breguet vs. Omega in Swatch's range of brands.

When you look at GS for what it is and not just how it's presented, they're amazing. Case finishing and movement technology is something you cannot touch for watches in that price range ($5-10k).

the reason they're displayed like this is because, contrary to watchforum collective autism, the japanese don't actually rave over grand seiko

they, like 99.99% of anyone in the world that wants a luxury timepiece, want swiss
rolex, omega etc., etc.

on the whole the japs are like every other market
they don't give a crap about grand seiko, hence these lacklustre displays

this notion that they "hold their own craftsmanship and brands above all else" may be true for many things, but not in the world of luxury watches.

they're not
the seiko boutiques are nice
independent retailers however
well, that pic the anon posted isn't the worst

as another indication of how much GS is valued by the japs, consider this:
comparative swiss brands invariably have their own boutiques, or are only sold in dedicated, high end watch shops (we're talking new, not used here)

GS is sold in the above, yes, but also in a chain of camera shops that sell cams, batteries and calculators
incidentally, cheapest place to buy a GS too.

that the japs hold GS above and beyond is an mistaken assumption that I've come across way too often on watch collecting forums
their posit their own likes, watch knowledge, preferences and general autism on ordinary mass consumers

it's sad though, right?
how many watches do GS produce a year? what miniscule fraction of rolex or swatchmega do they "churn" out?
tiny

nearly bought one during the end of year sales
spent ages looking at them
their indices sparkle like diamonds
came to the realisation that, though they were very nice and I would like one for a plain dress watch some day, at the present they weren't what I was looking for (something more casual) and that I was more enamoured with the idea of them than most of the models themselves

nice watches
shame no one seems to give a shit, considering the work that goes into them

True watch collector/ Layerfag here.

What'up m8? Sorry I didn't answer you before, but I took the oportunity to make a small trip to a Mexico's City to escape the cold weather and ended up in a beautiful hidden beach in the Pacific Ocean but without signal in my phone. :^)

Regarding the watch you want, I can tell you that, specially from that period, UN made some of the most beautiful sunburst dials all around, with a clear tornasol deep pattern quite noticeable with lights hitting directly. I would know, I have one with a black dial. :^)

The UN-85 in this Classico isn't, however, in-house but just propietary. That means UN refinishes it entirely and ad/modifies a few pieces for change or enhace functions. The rotor is quite nice in gold, though.

The only thing I may not like so much and it's your decision to decide against or in favor is the luminiva on the dial and hands. IMHO gold and luminova don't belong together, but that maybe a quirk that won't bother you at all so take a couple of minute to think about it.

Lastly, I want to asure tou that tge case, crown, dial and hands are really beautiful, specially as a whole so, if you like it and found a good deal, you should cop it as I'm positively sure you'll enjoy it greatfully and won't regreat a thing.

Time to board my plane now. ;^)

Unfortunately they don't make it anymore, you'd have to buy a used one. There's of course a gorillion homages out there that are closer in size to the older model, but if you want a Rolex then you want a Rolex.

At least in the new model you get a ceramic bezel insert, cooler looking lume, and a solid strap with some kind of easy-adjust clasp.

>> No.9406136

Yes you're quite right, the UN-815 is based on the ETA 2892, but has a COSC certified chronometer. Although a manufacture movement would carry some novelty value, it is not a dealbreaker for me. As you pointed out the watch really is elegant.

The model is also almost unorthodox for the standard modern UN models that we know the brand for, such as the Maxi Marine. The San Marco Classico is a faux antique tribute to the older and classical models that used to dominate the watch market. Indeed it looks a bit like a homage to JLC or even the AP Jules Audemars series (I'm pretty sure they came out first), but this classical model in 18ct gold really caught my eye. I've had a soft spot for UN for a while (the brand and especially its history connected to navy/marine carries a lot of novelty value for me), and I think this might be my first purchase into the brand finally.

Luminova and gold is a bit of an unorthodox combination, I agree, but I really don't feel it will impact my enjoyment of the watch in any way.

And of course, I found a really good deal. A fraction of the £10k retail or so that it goes for! Plus as a Russian I have to invest in gold! (our central bank is buying it like crazy recently amidst the economic crisis, trying to lessen dependancy on the dollar...)

Enjoy your trip wherever you're going m8! I'll post pictures of the baby once I've copped :^)

Rolex and Omega will be in the next case down. Japanese just don't care about that shit. They like the watch, they buy the watch. For fuck's sake once you walk out of the store it doesn't matter what kind of case it was displayed in. It's yours now.

This is why Japan had to invent the Lexus marque just to sell high-end Toyotas to Americans. Americans are too fucking stupid to realize that a single manufacturer might make goods in multiple tiers.

I'm guessing that first pic was at Yodobashi Camera? I've bought a dozen watches there. Good prices.

Waht's the point of the bezel on a dive watch? Can't you just make note of the current time and then know how much time has elapsed depending on where the minute hand is later? It's a lot faster than spinning the bezel around right?

mentally figuring out the elapsed time is a lot more hassle than just looking at your watch and having it tell you how long it's been

not familiar with the brand in general, but a cursory google search tells me the chronograph models use a standard run-of-the-mill miyota quartz movement. my issue with non-microstepper chronograph movements is that a timer that can only measure 1 second increments is hardly a stopwatch at all.
what's the price you're getting it for? I could make a better evaluation based on that. i know this is a fashion board so i'm hesitant to get too anal over movements like i would on /g/ but i'd hate to recommend you overpay for something when you could get a much better seiko chrono for cheaper.

well, they're not worth anywhere near 500eur.
if you like how it looks it'll probably suit your purposes just fine but I wouldn't personally recommend it due to the availability of superior movements at the same price point.
the only thing I can say is a definite negative about it is that (like pretty much everything at that price range) the metal bracelet is made of folded sheet metal and will feel tinny and light. you may want to replace the strap.

For many people its actually a hobby. If you are into horology and you fix and prep your own shit its pretty fun. It involves a lot of research though into the different types of movements, Trusted Dealers, and generation of watches.

Like a MIyota 8215 being used in some of these 'fakes' has a much better movement that a lot of Invicta and other low end shit you would pay 200-300 dollars for anyway

>> No.9414315

They were originally meant for pilots since it's hard to keep track of time when you're in a different time zone every day. You normally set the 24h hand to GMT time and then you never have to change it, then you set the regular hour hand to the local time.

They're also useful for keeping track of the time if you have to make business calls or something to people in other time zones. You can set the watch to your time, set the 24h hand to another time zone, and use the rotating bezel to figure out the time in a third time zone.
