the only reason a rolex is considered a good watch is because it costs enough to be maintained and babied. If you wore a patek everyday as a casual watch it would probably need service very often. Rolexs are more meant for the everyday can do nothing wrong with approach but still need to be serviced every 3-5 years. So your rolex needs servicing. Do you A. Have it serviced for $500 B. Dont service it and let it run down until it doesnt work? meanwhile if your $50 seiko needed service you think yo'd pay $40 to have it service? hell no you'd throw it out and buy a new one or just wait until it goes to shit. Its all about is it worth repair? A micky mouse watch from walmart will last as long as a rolex with proper care but no one cares because of the price.

Rolexs used to be work watches and then someone said lets charge 10x what theyre really worth call it a luxury watch and laugh to the bank. This is where we are today. And 40% of rolex parts are made in china so why even bother? If you buy a rolex because you like the way it looks far above any watch fine. Otherwise you look like a fool whos just trying to be a big shot.

Ok so there you go luxury brands are all scams if you think you're buying for quality

finer =/= expensive or even considered "luxury"

This statement makes no sense since this board hates brands like Gucci, Versace, etc.

If such the case where everything that is finer or luxury is fashionable you definitely wouldnt have people bagging on fossil or other fashion watches. Especially ironic on a board called fashion. Because longevity or function would play second hand to appearance.

>> No.9362104

>>9362071
you don't understand, it's quite simple actually. Finer things get more expensive because they are made of good materials which tend to increase in demand. Also, finer products have to raise prices whenever there is competition offering a cheaper product (I know this is counter-intuitive, but trust me) to offer more features or just plain luxury. Lastly, the demand of the product itself, whether it falls in the first or the second case, also increases the price of the product.

I understand but what I'm saying is you don't have to buy rolex to get rolex quality or look. The submariner is the biggest here. The datejust, daytona, and sea/sky dweller have much less competition. Especially the skydweller (good lord bleg).

In the end I think most people will agree a rolex is ~1000 watch which is pretty good! Its definitely better than a lot of others. But if you think you're laying down 10k for quality you're mistaken. Its like buying a luxury brand shirt. You buy it for the look/name and not that it offers you more.

For me Im either wearing a watch for look or function. They can be separate. Plus Im not too keen to make myself a target for thieves. So I wear a couple hundred dollar watch and I keep a sharp knife on me. Thats enough for me.

Also you most definitely can get a rolex for under 5k. Especially a used date like the original rolex post

Incorrect. Your watches hold almost no monetary value. A pawn shop wouldn't even buy the burberry or russian watch. The bulova it really depends on the quality, but it definitely doesn't hold its value like a rolex. You threw money away when you paid for those three watches.

A rolex on the other hand does hold its value, and is an investment of sorts.

LOL damn son thanks for the laughs. Ok I don't believe any rolex made after 1980 is gonna have any return on investment. Even the older rolexs when you factor all the years of service you're not gonna make money on a watch unless its some iconic shit that drives the price up. Like James Bond wore it.

Why the fuck would I sell to a pawn shop? The number of people buying designer watches on ebay is ridiculous and theyll pay way too much.

Better question why would I sell em? Ill pay $10 for a replacement battery. The russian one I might keep up because I like the history. The vintage bulova will fetch a few hundred on ebay. Its an old acutron. I got that one from an old guy I know.

My girlfriend gave it to me for our 3 year anniversary in December and it's my first mechanical automatic. Sure it isn't an heirloom piece and doesn't cost more than $200, but it means enough to share

Funnily enough, my grandpa gave me my second mechanical automatic watch for christmas, an old seiko 5 he's had since the 80s or 90s. Again, it's not an heirloom piece but I shed a tear when I unwrapped it. It was on a worn out metal bracelet that I switched out for silicone

Yes, they refuse to overall embrace any new lines and limit theirselfs to "buff up" their current models to make them appel younger generations but we have to remeber the valuable function they offer to the watchmaking industry: they maintain the image of high quality swiss watches inside the minds of the general public, wich, at least for some, will eventually buy one or more kickstarting a collection habit, indispensable for the industry in general.

Laurent Ferrier does in no way have the same level of quality and craftmanship as Urban does.

Stamped silver dial, stamped cases, single-piece hands, etc. Nothing noteworthy about them apart from the movements. Basically a nice Calatrava. Also, hold up a magnifying glass to Laurent's movements and compare them to Urban. The fit and finish is just better on the Urban. There is no question about it.

yes. the only difference is that the Lorus watch doesn't need battery to illuminate the watch like the Indiglo feature of a Timex. it's just Seiko's Lumibrite Lume for the whole dial instead. I swear, it glows the whole night and you can always read it in the dark which makes it really awesome.

I really don't get what's there to laugh about. it's only convenient. some chronographs also have a different kind of date window on top, 12 o'clock position.

G-shocks are all in resin except this line, which is in metal. It's a high-end line from casio that has only been available in Japan until recently I think.

I have that amount of cash (700€) and want a look similar to this watch, one that can still be pulled of by a 25-year old that doesn't wear a suit everyday. From what I've gathered, a good mechanical under 1k is hard to find and generally I can't pull it off, so I wen't with a good quartz one (I think I did anyways).

I could use some help if anyone wants to chip in.

I'm damn fine with paying that price for a quartz, if you actually need / use the features the MTG comes with.

Otherwise, it's waaaaaayyyyyyyyy too much for a quartz.

What would you recommend for that pricetag?
I like the features and think I'd give them some use but I'm afraid I'll stop using them after the novelty fades. Are there good mechanical watches similar to this one for this price? I'm a newcomer to watches, this is pratically my first actual purchase, bar a couple of fossil and swatches.

Thanks for the list, but in the bottom half of the list (that has more to do with my budget) I can´t really find anything I like except the Steinhearts and I can´t get those where I am.

I've seen some Tissot models and the only ones I like/can afford are quartz and they're lacking a feature that I find really appealing in quartz watches - solar powered. I looked at some Certina pieces and didn't find anything particularly apealing. I really like the MTG I posted but am worried about overpaying for a quartz, like >>9367455 said, even if it's the best that casio makes (I would assume that I can´t find a better japanese quartz in terms of quality given the price).

Those in the know, what do you think about bulova?

>> No.9367704

>>9367687
the only thing bulova currently produces that's interesting is the precisionist. as a whole the brand has become a lot more mall-watch-y after their purchase by miyota although they are technically a real watch brand. their designs just kind of feel like being in the same case as diesel has rubbed off on them or something.
their vintage shit is really cool, such as the tuning fork accutrons which is what the precisionist is trying to imitate.

I've been looking solely for quartz watches because someone told me that for under 1k I wouldn't find a good mechanical movement and because the japs really dig their quartz (casio doesn't even mechanical) I thought I'd go for a really good quartz that had a uniqueness to it ( an all-metal G-shock, for instance).
When I get a job and start earning money, then I'll buy a good mechanical watch.

Oh I didn't mean they won't ship (I have no clue actually) but I've never seen one in any watch-dedicated store I've been to and since I'd never even heard of Steinheats I was weary of considering them. I'm form Portugal btw.

I'd discourage you from buying anything over $1k that is also under $5k or so. it tends to be the least bang-for-buck range in mechanicals, with the notable exception of nomos.
I strongly disagree with whoever said that. ETA movements and seiko's JDM movements (aka everything on the bottom guide section) are great. i'd say bang for buck that around $500 is the ideal range for a watch.
you haven't seen steinhart because they're a microbrand that was founded in 2007. they have a few brick and mortar resellers across europe but most of their business takes place online. they use ETA movements (or their inhouse clone of ETA movements in some cases) and are on par with hamilton, tissot, or any other brand that uses ETA movements.

Yeah. If you look on the guide, the movement is listed right next to the picture of the watch. the ETA 2824 and 2836 are the most common for swiss. seiko uses the 6R15 in most of their japanese domestic market models but also uses the 4R36 on a few in the sports line. if you want to research the technical aspects of movements watch-wiki.net has specs on most of them. major differences between JDM seikos and swiss ETA watches are that ETAs have a smoother seconds hand but seikos have better external finishing.

By the way since the other guy didn't really explain, ETA is a Swiss company owned by the Swatch Group which also owns many of the Swiss watch companies. ETA manufactures mechanical watch movements which are then used by the other Swatch companies in their own watches. ETA also sells movements to companies outside of Swatch. These days many Swiss watches have ETA movements in them, only a few companies still make their own movements in-house. Usually those are companies like Rolex which is outside of the Swatch group, or sometimes companies in the Swatch group will make their own "in-house" movements for their higher-end watches (Omega does this, for example).

JDM is Japanese Domestic Market. Basically that's Seiko or Miyota. Seiko make every single part of their watches in-house, even down to the oil that lubricates them. I don't think Seiko really sells their movements to other companies though. Sometimes Chinese fakes will have Seiko movements in them but that's not exactly authorized by Seiko. Miyota is owned by Citizen, they make movements for Citizen and also sell their movements to other companies and compete with ETA in that regard.

>> No.9368058

>>9368035
Also there are many Seiko models that are JDM only, like the SARB series. You can buy them direct from Japan, but they aren't really meant to be sold to other countries. They are very nice watches which are superior to the stuff that Seiko exports because the Japanese are very proud of their Seiko watches and they hate the thought of letting baka gaijin waito piggus wear their finest watches.

Just get something that isn't gaudy and bright as fuck and you'll be fine. Nobody bats an eye when folks wear a dive watch or a cheap $10 Casio. Just find one that you like and wear it.

If you're still looking for literal suggestions, take a look at Orient's cheaper line of watches. The Union and Bambino are dressier and can be dressed down. The Mako is a great piece too, being more of a dress diver but still functional enough to be worn during swimming and general weekend fun.

Related, Orient Mako.
