When I worked in a department store I'd have women ask me for a specific size, even if they were definitely not that size, and they'd try it on.
When it inevitably didn't fit they'd get cross with me and ask why they couldn't fit X size in here when they're definitely X size because they wear it all the time in another brand.
If I tried to politely suggest sizing sometimes differs through different brands they'd get huffy with me, say "Well I'm not a size Y that's for sure" and leave without trying the larger size on, even if it was going to fit.

Because women's clothing has suffered vanity sizing over the years (although I've been told it's worse in the US it still happens over here in the UK) some women get used to the idea that they're maybe a size 10 in one brand, then when they have to try a 12 or a 14 in another because their usual brands sizes are a few inches larger they feel insulted and as if they've been called fat.


Having consistent sizing and measurement based sizing would be a better way to do things, but in the current system where sizing is adjusted relative to a fattening population and also in the UK where differentiations between juniors/misses/womens sizing don't exist it can be a guessing game as to what size you're actually getting. A size 6 waist can be anywhere between 23.5-27 inches depending on where you shop. The only hint of a guide you'd ever get is that shops with an older clientele (eg planet or precis) are likely to err on the wider and shorter and shops with a younger clientele (eg topshop, miss selfridge) will err on the slimmer side. The problem that then arises is a lot of women then cling to the smallest size that's been found to fit and get offended if they're too fat for it elsewhere.

You're mostly right. Although for years as a child I was called fat daily by my brother, my weight has shot down and im a 26 inch waist and im 6'2. I'm fairly obsessed with my weight and trouser size but Id have no problem wearing a 30 if I needed to.

I've had maybe 2 comments about my hips on fashion forums while wearing a certain pair of jeans because they have excess fabric around the hip and thigh(too big for me) and that sometimes puts me down. I'm young and I hope to grow out of it, basically, it's an insecurity thing, not a thing to do with gender.

Dude our jackets and pants are measured in inches. Small is a 38" chest, medium is 40", large is 42", and xl is 44". I wear a 32-32 in all pants and a 42 in tops. Only at places like topman or hm do I have to size up in jackets to a 44 or 46. Even so, being big as a man is a good thing so vanity sizing seems pointless.
