It's not about the hardware, though that is a factor. Kors copies very recognizable shapes/details (e.g. Hermès's Birkin, Céline's Trapeze, Prada's Alma) and then does it in often treated/embossed leathers, including a Saffiano, so that you can't really tell what the quality of the leather was to start with. But Michael Kors markets itself very differently. The bags are usually VERY straightforward copies, but the clothes and footwear speak more to generalized trends and don't try as hard to actually copy what's out on the market. Accessories are a great place to copy because it's a high volume, high margin business, but people do tend to be more wary about "copying" with apparel with a designer because they're trying to avoid the associations you get with typical fast fashion. All the Kors clothing collections are inoffensive, but you can always tell that there's someone in product development and merchandising who is watching what the big dogs do and puts out something that's a friendlier, less directional version.
