I didn't do it, I am planning on actually stripping my hair and toning in a couple months but the general consensus I get is you will have to deep condition afterwords and you shouldn't leave it on more than an hour.

i have locs, i retwist them myself but I've had locs all my life so I knew what I was doing. definitely go to a loctician when you're starting them and when they're still in the baby process. after that you can go about retwisting yourself as palm rolling isn't exactly hard, just time consuming. Get some organic shampoo/conditioner for natural hair (I use tea tree shampoo/conditioner from trader joes, it's only 3.99 each in store and raved about). you also want to search online for some organic loc gel (i use carol's daughter loc butter). as for how often you should wash and condition, it's really whenever you feel like you should, just don't do it too often and in too short of a time span, and know you'll have to retwist it when you do.

your hair will not have the same texture or be able to be styled in exactly the same way.

you will need to grow it out alot longer than it is now (i would estimate 5-6 months)

ultimately all you need is patience .

its hard but you need to resist the urge to go to the barber(even for an edge up) and make it through the inevitable "ugly phase"

I wouldn't be be able to tell you how much real growth I've had, but I can tell you how I got here:

I've had a flat top fade that i kept cutting down to keep it neat for some months and then after October I left the sides to grow out. I got the entire thing shortened a bit late November to clean up strays, and I've been growing it out since.

Its really easy, just take your hand, brush, or sponge and rub your hair in clockwise circles. When you look at yourself in the mirror your hand should be moving anti-clockwise. Its best when your hair is damp, and I recommend Shea butter or Taliah Waajid's Curly Curl Cream to keep the curls in.

Black hair is best when it's moisturized, and etc etc. this is what I personally do, but you're gonna have to kind of figure out what works for you.

okay, so, like, how much different is your hair between relaxed/unrelaxed? Relaxing for most people just loosens their curl pattern, ot just flat out removes it.

not a whole lot. it's not gonna curl, because there probably ISN'T a curl there, does that make sense? It's just gonna make your hair stronger and softer probably. I really can't tell you for sure what will happen because everyone's hair is different, especially among black people, and if you're mixed, even more so.
I have two siblings, and all three of of have different hair, even though we have the same parents. Deep conditioning won't HURT you though. Alot of people use deep conditioning to loosen their curl pattern, so it's not gonna make your hair curlier unless you curl it or something.

okay, so like I said, alot of people have to find out what works for them, so I can only tell you what I personally use. Curly nikki is a good source for finding products, but it helps alot if you know what result you're looking for, so you can find and buy a product that will accommodate you. If I were you, I would start reading black hair blogs, it's helped me alot.

I grab new stuff here and there off the shelf of the store if it catches my eye, but I always read the ingredients to see what it has. You can also make alot of stuff yourself; again if you know what you want to accomplish, it's not that hard. if you search "natural [or] black hair [conditioner/shampoo/deep conditioner/leave-in conditioner] " you'll find lots of recipes.
"Natural hair" or "black hair" brands tend to be best, obviously, since they're catering to people like me. Alot of "regular" products aren't made for our hair type, and so sometimes they do more harm than good, and sometimes they just don't work at all.

If that was your hair 5 years back, hmm. Was it ever longer? looking at your hair there, I don't think it wouldn't have gotten any "bigger', does that make sense? When I was younger, my hair only grew 'up' but I think had it gotten longer it would have started to be weighed down by gravity more. I would go for a leave-in conditioner as well, or some sort of styling something or other. Most deep conditioners sit in your hair for a while and then are rinsed out.
