Hey guys, i would love your opinion on my first "luxury" watch purchase.

2014 was a brilliant year for me career-wise. I just wrapped up a tour of the country performing shows in every state (Australia).

To celebrate the recent success I'm looking at purchasing this watch: A Rolex Datejust II to serve as a momento of the experience and a reminder to work harder.

However I'm still pretty open to suggestions on other watches and would love some opinions on the one I've chosen.

I wanted something that can be dressed up or down as I don't want to make a habit of buying an expensive watch for particular situations.

As for other watches I'm a fan of some that Omega produce but I admit I don't have a very broad knowledge on the topic.

Thank you! Oh, and if it matters I'm 20 years old and i'd say my style is usually jackets, boots, beanies and jeans, nothing too outrageous :)

Are you a musician? If you are an artist of any type I'm interested in seeing some of you work, I'm from Australia also. Probably should have clarified haha, I'm not a musician (can play instruments but not good enough to make cash out of it) I'm actually a stand up comic. I've been touring since the Melbourne comedy festival and getting ready for the next 22 shows in April.

On any other board I would share some work but i don't want to derail the thread, just looking for some watch thoughts!

The speedmaster is a beautiful watch, i've been eyeing that one off too, haven't had a chance to see it in person yet. And yeah usually I don't like gold because it's a bit flashy but when I saw it with the black face I fell in love with the combination. I dunno, kinda tones the gold down a little imo

Are there any chances I could see some of your work, like a link or something, I genuinely appreciate comedy and any artist from Australia. It will be your watch so the decision is entirely up to you, but you should keep in mind that you are very young and you tastes will change. The Rolex submariner and speed master keep value pretty well and are so versatile that they are hard to dislike even if your tastes change. You could get a used watch for cheap to see if you like it and sell it if you don't after a few months will little financial loss, I have an submariner homage that I love, shame I can't afford the real version

Buy the Datejust II. You clearly have already fall in love with it. And if, like you said, you don't plan on getting several more watches, this will suit you well in any possible ocassion.

If it was for me I would prefer another metal combination but I do have a watch for every ocassion, and plan to add even more to my high end collection in the future, BUT general public won't see this as an alternative in their lifes so, having one good watch from whom most people think (wrongly, but whatever) is the best maker will do.

Hope you get to make some comedy about high end watches in the future, later in life, when you become more informed.

Even if you have the money - don't buy a Rolex. It's not like their not worth it, they are excellently timepieces. But for people who are into watches, Rolex is a watch for pimps (i.e. people with money but without sophistication).

Clearly, Im being snooty. But we're discussing luxury watches, so this is just the time? Check the Omegas. And buy one with leather wristband, youre not in your teens anymore.

But congrats to your succes!

Oh, one last thing: Rolex has a really good resale value if that'd be the decisive factor.

not him, but as others have pointed out, it's a nice watch but it's too big and it doesn't suit you. if you're wearing Muppet pajamas, you don't get to put on expensive italian shoes and a cashmere scarf and expect for people to be like "that guy's got a lot of class for wearing such stylish shoes and scarf." no, they see a guy in Elmo pajamas. you drew busy, crowded pictures all over your arm. there's stuff that could work with that, but classy watches ain't one of them.

Pretty subjective. You should probably try it on if you can. nb - I've heard Vostok Europe as being a so-so company, not at all related to Vostok Russia. You can get similar styled watches from Seiko, Citizen, probably Orient, etc. I would suggest looking at those brands also.

A similar thing happens to a vintage citizen of mine. There's a chance it could just be the hands/gears that move the hands aren't properly connected to the movement? If so, it could be a simple matter to fix. But yeah, if you can get it replaced or resolved otherwise that is what I'd do.

mine, it's pretty awesome for casualwear, light weight, 8mm thin and 38mm diameter, lumibrite dial that glows the whole night so you can always read it.

alternatively, look at the 4 different Seiko 5 SNK models. they look a bit similar but are 13mm thick and automatics instead.

I know this is a bit unnecessary but I feel a bit conflicted.
which color would suit me best?
which one do you personally prefer?

I actually own the green one already and like it a lot as a watch but sometimes I'm having troubles with it because I'm thinking it doesn't go well together with my pale skin. so I figured I might at least change the strap.

I don't know. Something about the blue one seems off to me for some weird reason and I'm not too fond of mainly black watches either.
I kinda wish there was a raspberry version since I like red and pink color shades a lot.

>how bad are quartz watches compared to automatic?
there's nothing objectively worse about an orient quartz watch vs an orient mechanical watch. they're both gonna have roughly the same level of finishing.
basically, the quartz will keep better time but the seconds hand will have that jumpy 1hz movement and may emit a faint ticking sound.
mechanicals are only considered to be better as a whole because the market for expensive watches prefers mechanicals and thus all the high quality pieces get mechanical movements.
at the same general price point, a quartz and a mechanical from a reputable watch company should be about the same.

they are better than automatic in every single way if we are talking functionality and keeping it running because you only need the battery and no winding whatsoever.

automatics just are considered true craftsmanship and thus more expensive.

I choose this reference because I wanted to have the movement finished in the way only this version includes, due to having a crystal caseback.
Having a movement properly finished (côtes de Gèneve, anglage, perlage, etc...) is for me way more important than having the exact iconic model.
Also, properly finishing calibers provides longevity of the components and better timekeeping.
Please, read the Poiçon de Géneve manifest to understand why.

I assure you, people refusing to repair/restore old timepieces are the worst we can deal with.
If I ever create my own brand, I'd be honored that people are still repairing them and trying to put them back in their original state decades later.
Giving a watch its shine back is the greatest hommage you can do to its creators.
You're the stupid one.

>> No.9313493

>>9313241
First of all, suck my dick bitch. I didn't called you stupid.

Second, I believe there is a difference between modern, old and vintage watches.
Old watches (let's say, from the 80's or something and foreward) haven´t made the trip from that far in time so it's ok to have it repolished and generally refurbished, if it needs so to regain their former glory and end up looking good.

However, vintage watches (from the sixtie's and back) have already half a century of life at least and if those watches had managed to come from then til now without having their parts being replaced it's something noteworthy, and we should allow them to continue likewise. We should preverse history as it is.

Third, I think we may have met before, as some watchmaker posted in a thread about watches couple of weeks ago and posted a few pictures of his workshop. If it's you, let's stay friends, all right? I'm the watch collector with several pieces and a F.P.Journe Chronometré Bleu among them.
