I feel like the graphic novel Transmetropolitan is one of the truer visions of the future, especially in cities. Helmut was at the top of his game when he left the industry, which is a shame, but I think his attitude toward his departure is admirable. Yeah, he sold a controlling interest in the label to Prada (for expansion and funding I assume) but he didn't agree with the Prada execs about the direction of the label so he retired. He now lives on Long Island and makes visual art.
Prada sold the label to Link Theory in 2006. The menswear line was shelved for years and the womenswear became fairly generic urban chic stuff very loosely inspired by Helmut's minimalist design bent. Plokhov was recently named as new menswear director.
I have a fair bit of vintage Helmut stuff, which is exceptional quality. I wouldn't go near most of the new stuff, but I bought some new Helmut jeans a couple years ago and they're fantastic. I think because Link Theory is Japanese and they produce all the denim in Japan, the quality is far above the rest of the line, which was mostly made in China until recently.
