What clothes do you see as timeless?
That defies all trends. I'm sick of being in trend all the time, and want to build a wardrobe of the best quality, long lasting clothes that won't make me look out of place for the next 5-10 years.

Pic semi related. For contrast, clothes and styling that can't be timeless.

Monochrome is le timeless in all honesty. It will never go out of style in fashion, only in high street fashion.

Nothing is timeless. Even a pair of jeans and a white tshirt can fall victim to looking outdated if you pick a cut or variation you think of as timeless now but in 5-10 years might signal 2014. (Eg a slimmer fit of jeans now, pale wash in the 80s).

You can buy stuff that won't look bad in years to come, like a classic cut breton, but you'd be hard pressed to find anything truly timeless.

Clothing that fit you nicely won't be outdated. Special cuts like long or baggy tees will.
In 2099, white tees that fit you won't look outdated.

they said the same thing about peacoats two years ago

reminder that slim straight indigo raws, brown boots, a light blue oxford, and grey peacoat was considered a timeless outfit four years ago.

point being, timeless doesn't exist.

You're judging what fits you nicely by a 2014 lens. What is considered fitting nicely now might be too loose or too tight a few years down the line.

Yeah oversized or skinny trends but fitting clothes were always there.

You're not grasping this are you.
What you consider fitting isn't what fitting was 20 years ago and isn't what fitting will be in 20 years.

This brings into question what we mean by timeless, though. Plenty of what people consider in style now definitely draws upon older styles. Looser, high-waisted, light washed women's jeans like in your pic are completely in style right now. That's not to say people won't think of the 80s when they see them, but I don't think they'll consider you outdated-looking.

A good amount of the art form involves (and will always involve, I think) revival to varying degrees of distance looking backward in time. I think people are inclined to call something "timeless" if

a) its popularity run lasts longer than other stuff, or

b) it's something that went out of style but came back in.

What do you guys think?

This.
Look at fashionable streetwear from like 2005 and it will look like a potato sack from today's point of view (Muh bootcut jeans, muh Chucks, muh racing jackets).

If something goes and and comes back in it is by definition not timeless, because if you're outside of the periods where it's relevant you'll look outdated.

Just watch Supernatural reruns. TV shows are usually good to see how people dressed in a certain time (e.g. X Files style monster coats in the 90s).
