Just look at the fit and try on where possible.
If it fits well then you're doing better than any goth, which is a start.
Then start to look at textiles/craftsmanship and what sort of material look/feel nice to wear.
Price shouldn't be a concern, and if it is, it should be a secondary concern to either of the points I already mentioned.

Also, it doesn't hurt to go into a store and try on. If they try to talk you into buying the item, just make up an excuse like "I'm looking for a different color" or "it doesn't really fit the way I envisioned" or something like that. 2 seconds of looking like a pleb and you know what to buy online for cheaper than any store.
