Went to $40,000 boarding school for 4 years and these are the most accurate. The fucking Ralph Lauren ads really complicate an easy aesthetic. In the summer sperrys, j.crew shorts and pastel Polo shirts and Ray Bans. In the fall and winter just basic wool sweaters with shirt and tie underneath and wool calf length jacket. It's really more about attitude than anything else.

Ralph Lauren puts out 'fashion' type stuff that (whilst interesting) would look ridiculous IRL

Basically for prep you need the attitude first and the clothes second. It should look natural and unpretentious, as if you fell out of bed late for class and a candy striped oxford and chinos were the first clothes you could find

Also, "pure" preppy fits often come across as stuffy and try hard i.e. blazer/tie/oxford/chinos/brogues. Don't be afraid to just throw on some Adidas or a band shirt to keep things looking natural. I always try to keep a balance of preppy and modern pieces in every fit - I might wear a navy cable and oxford but rather than chinos, wear some slim acid washed jeans or shit
