Start no poo it works great for almost a year but I swam in a chlorinated pool one time and it fucked up my hair so bad. Turned it into a super coarse mess. Scalp gets really dandruffy and gross. So I switch back to shampoo now every day and every time I shampoo massive amounts of hair falls out. I'm 18 my dad is almost 50 and although he is balding and has really thing hard he was fine basically up until he was 30. My mom's hair is ridiculously thick. Why is this happening is it diet? I'm not eating that differently. My hair is pretty knotted and every time I hit on of the knots putting my hand through my hair is pulls out the entire hair. Please help

Well I've gotten several compliments for my glasses and they're pretty practical (lightweight), they work well for me tbh.

Beard isn't just because of the trend, I've wanted to grow a beard since I was 5 and it's the first time I've been able to grow a "proper" beard, even though it is very reddish in the color.

Depends on your hairline. I think if you keep letting the top grow out, but keep trimming/buzzing the sides, it'd look good. Use a matte styling product after towel drying your hair. Don't brush it back (or ever) and always keep it pushed a little forward and messy looking. Get the ends trimmed every couple months. If your hair starts to thin too much more, you're going to have to buzz it or live with it. You could also try adding a few shades of balayage highlights to it to give it some dimension/trick the eye into making it appear fuller. Never let it get past your eye brows since they're thick and it would fuck up your appearance. Full eyebrows and thinning hair make your hair look thinner, no matter the length/styling/dying. Let it reach your eyebrow and fall naturally and you'll be good for a while.

There's an alternative to full buzz and that's why i'm rocking since few months how. It's a contrast of very short and less very short.

Try something like 3mm sides and 10mm ( less or more, depends how it looks and how you want it ) top.

Sure thing. But no, that shouldn't be a problem. The stylist might want to trim a little off the top, which understandable, but just say you want to keep the top long and the sides shorter. Tell them you're growing out the top and don't let them pressure you into a cookie cutter male haircut. Or try to find a younger stylist who would understand that you want something 'different', even though it isn't different... The easiest thing to do is bring in a photo. Give the stylist a visual of what you want and they'll know what you're going for. Bring in a picture of an undercut with a nice fade and you'll be set.

Hey everyone, I don't come here often - maybe only once a week or so to browse the buy/sell/trade thread. But I decided to read the general hair thread to see what people were doing and to help a few of you guys. Anyway, I was responding to someone asking about "no poo" and ended up writing a lot, so here is some useful information on "no poo", hair color, and hair care, from a professional hair stylist. I think a lot of you guys would find it helpful. ALSO: I didn't know there was a limit to how much I could post.. so I had to break it up.

Don't mess with the "no poo" trend. Just use a sulfate-free shampoo, a silicone-free conditioner, and don't brush your hair, especially when wet. Use a clarifying shampoo on your hair every month or so, more often if you use styling products.

The no poo thing is disgusting, and doesn't work well with men. If you're black or don't produce much oil, it's great and healthy. If you're white/any other race, and produce a lot of oil, it's nasty. I'm a hair stylist and often deal with new male models who try the no poo thing because someone at their agency suggested it. After a while, your hair won't need shampoo anymore, but that is because the dried out oils your hair used to produce are clogging the hair follicles so they won't produce much more oil. It's really harmful if you're balding. You naturally shed hair everyday, sometimes when you're stressed/sometimes when the weather changes. We're humans and our bodies/hair react to different environmental/mental changes. After you shed some hair, and whatever situation that caused you to lose your hair changes, your body will try to regrow some hair into those hopefully still healthy hair follicles. If your hair follicles are clogged with oil and don't get much blood flow, you won't be able to regrow hair there.

It may seem like your hair is fuller and healthier, but the first time you wash your hair after going "no poo" for a while, you'll notice a large amount of hair coming out as you shampoo. This is because when you keep your scalp dirty, your body holds onto the hair for various reasons. The main one is dried and dead hair follicles. The oil that's dried onto your scalp helps secure the now dead hair (I know hair is already dead, I meant the root, the 'living' material directly sprouting from the follicle), and once you wash it, you are releasing the hair that would have naturally shed a few weeks ago. You will still lose hair as often as your body would if you hadn't gone "no poo", and maybe even more.

A lot of people like to cite evolutionary reasons for no poo working, and this is true in some cases. If your race/ethnicity/ancestry stems from an extremely cold environment, like northern Canada or some other cold as fuck location, the body will be used to having thick hair that doesn't produce much oil and can go without washing for years. If you're a pale white dude with blonde hair, you're probably from a warmer environment that is used to having thinner hair, and hair with more oil to protect it from the sun/heat. This is why native american/inuit/ainu people have healthy thick hair that doesn't need washing for upkeep, and why if you're pale and white with blonde hair, you're more likely to bald at a younger age.

Also, if you are just starting the no poo thing, change your pillow case every few days. Your skin will thank you. Ever notice how you have more acne on one side of your face that touches your pillow every night? Hair oil is one of the most pore clogging oils the human body produces. Don't let it get in your skin! "No poo" models always come in with nasty smelling hair that is hard to work with, and then shitty skin. Especially the models who are just starting the no poo thing. Then they ask the make up artist why their skin has started breaking out and they assume it's because it's the start of a new season and they're stressed about getting jobs and shit, and while that is partly true, it's also because they aren't washing their hair and their pillow case is full of backed up nasty oil.

Points: No poo probably won't work for you. Girls/guys/whoever you're into are not going to be into someone with gross smelling/feeling hair. Change your pillow case often. I recommend buying a few pillow cases, sleep up to two nights on one side, then switch to the other side. Change to a fresh pillow case every four days.

---- a note about hair color ----

Don't be afraid of coloring your hair. Obviously don't bleach your hair and dye it green, or get highly contrasting highlights (unless you're punk rock as fuck and can pull it off), but hair coloring is incredibly common among male models, even black models. Most male models who have hair longer than two inches get some sort of highlight or balayage coloring on their hair. It's very subtle, and usually only two or three shades lighter or darker, depending on skin color/tone. It makes hair look fuller, gives it depth and dimension, and also makes it look healthier (which is helpful with harsh runway camera flash that washes out color). Don't try doing it yourself, consult a professional colorist, preferably one who has worked in the fashion industry. Don't let someone give you "highlights". You don't want highlights. Highlights are noticeable and distract from someones face. Balayage looks natural and only adds to the natural color/texture. It brings out underlying tones and makes the hair look sun kissed and healthy. If you look at any male model thread on here (which I did before posting this), you'll notice about four of five shades of balayage treatments in their hair. The thing that is so great about balayage coloring is that it looks natural and can be added upon. It tends to look better over time. Also, most people won't notice it if it's done correctly. They'll just think you got a tan or somehow look healthier. As for black models, they are usually given a slight hair color lightening/toning, and then they have their hair redyed black with either a brown tone or a blue tone, depending on their skin color/tone. Asian models go through the same thing. The point of color when it comes to male models is to emphasize their hairs natural tone and texture, and to make up for the years of harsh shampooing and lack of hair care they've put themselves through.

And some info on hair products. The most important thing to note when buying shampoo is that it is sulfate free. Sulfates dry out the hair and scalp and are just generally bad for hair. They strip it of its natural oils (which you want some of, just not a "no poo" amount) and also remove hair color and dumb down natural hair tone. Some sulfates aren't bad. Just look for a shampoo that is sulfate free. You might be confused when you first use it because sulfate free shampoo doesn't foam up or lather. When using it, make sure your hair is really wet, and then work it through your hair for 30 seconds or so before rinsing it out. My personal favorite sulfate free shampoo is the aveeno naturals one. It's a cheap shampoo, but it works a lot better for me than most of the expensive brands I've used.

When it comes to conditioner, try to use one that is silicone free. Silicones in conditioner makes your hair feel healthier and look shinier, but that is only because they deposit silicone into your hair. That silicone prevents the conditioner from really penetrating the hair shaft and moisturizing your hair. Research silicone free conditioner and find one that works for you. I have a friend who makes conditioner and she makes mine, so I don't really have any recommendations. Also, if you're lucky, you may be able to skip the shampoo and just condition your hair to clean it. If the conditioner is good enough, it will penetrate the hair shaft, and will grab onto oils and remove them as you wash it away. The Wen line of products is great and known for this. Their best product (and one I've been trying to get into the salon where I work) is their cleansing conditioner. You can wash your hair with it, condition with it, and then use it as a leave in conditioner on your ends. I use it every two weeks during the summer when my hair is oiler. Then, during the winter, I use it as my normal shampoo/conditioner. Also, you can leave conditioner in your hair for as long as you want. If it's a good conditioner, you can sleep in it and it will wash out the next day without removing color.

Another thing to consider. If you use any styling products in your hair, buy a clarifying shampoo. It will say clarifying on the bottle. These shampoos are stronger and do have sulfates, but they clean hair incredibly well and will remove the build up of products your normal shampoo leaves behind. I recommend using one once a month if you don't use any styling products, and once every two weeks if you do. If you're putting unnatural stuff on your hair, you're going to need something unnatural and strong to take it out.
