ive bought cheap minus 33 merino longsleave and bottoms on amazon for $50-60 total and honestly, aside from that annoying itchy tag that i had to remove, i wore it every day durin winter/early spring as my insulation layer. there's holes all over it too but i dont might, its a base layer that goes underneath

ive had a thicker icebreaker shirt that i wear during really cold snowing morning runs and i love it. sometimes i wear it casually as well

as for shirts and henleys, merino wool is next to silk for best texture+insulation/weight, however it can be $80 for a basic merino wool shirt so it's not pleb tier and more yuppy tier. also wool wear is an investment and you have to maintain from moths and what not, but honestly ive worn my wool over and over and over until it pills and rips that my investment was well worth it. look for cheap merino shirts in the $30-50 range before investing in more exp stuff. you can also go synthetic with stuff like Patagonia too which is significantly cheaper

my personal fav is outlier merino wool shirt but extremely costly ($100 for a t shirt)
outlier.cc
finisterreuk.com is nice too if you're euro

better to find ibex/icebreaker/patagonia on sale
minus33 is cheap and nice, just cut off those damn tags

i like patagonia r1 hoody, good for ultralight weight backpacking and the slim fit is fuckin sex, reg price is like >$100 but can be copped for less than $80 during 50% sales

also check out montbell ul down, japan outdoor company that has slim fitting and ultra light weight 800 fill power down (anything less than 800 is pleb tier goose down)

on really cold days on campus i just wear

R1 hoody (no undershirt, it's my base layer)
Montbell EX Light Down Jacket
sometimes Patagonia Houdini if it's windy

all for under >1 lb of weight

i like patagonia and was looking at their synchilla snap-t ones, i like the r1 too. would probably go for the pullover instead of the hoodie tho.

tbh one reason i copped the north face one is cause my hardshell and bag are also patagonia so i fancied mixing it up.

Good thread, OP. I'm not really into the whole ultralight ethos, but the clothes often look super cool and it short-circuited the brand and tactical obsessions that derail most tech threads.

Pic related in one piece I really like, the Patagonia Ultralight Down Shirt in Midnight Navy. They only modestly claimed it was "their" lightest insulation piece, but it's actually the lightest anyone's ever done. 5.7 easy cozy warm ounces. (162g.)

Discontinued, but a different colorway is still on clearance.

TBH, just buy off price and design. Paying more for finer micron stuff, like Ibex's 17.5, isn't a bad idea, but I would skip Outlier's basic tee just because it's too basic beyond the 17.5 micron wool. It's also 200gsm, which they think makes for a better drape, but I think most people on /fa/ will prefer a lighter one.

Their other wool stuff is ace, though.

Slight blends aren't a bad idea at all - the handfeel can be very subtly different, not worse, just different. Off the top of my head, Patagonia makes ones blended with polyester; Kuiu and Finisterre make ones blended with nylon. The idea is the same in every case - decrease dry times, increase strength.

The Kuius are probably the most *advanced* around - they use only 17.5 micron fiber and a special spinning process that produces stronger, more elastic yarn from it. Three perfectly calibrated weights - 125, 145, and 210 gsm; the 125 has vents cut in the sides and the 145 and 210 have small Napoleon pockets. Great feel, great function, only problem is that it's all hunting colors.

All that said, you can't go wrong with the any cheapo Sierra Trading Post option another guy mentioned. I've got most of my baselayers that way and have no complaints.

I'll dump some more later, but if you're looking for a good, cheap fleece pullover, check out the Polartec USMC pullover. At least per Polartec marketing materials, it has the highest approval rating of any piece of issued gear.

Sounds like marketing talk, but look at it, and don't you believe it? The sheer basic coherence of the design, done by Natick Labs (the US military infantry R&D center) in collaboration with Polartec, is kind of staggering. Like, yes, you think - that is the ideal form of a classic fleece pullover. No "tactical" bullshit, no frips, just a layer of fuzzy polyester insulation that's completely fluid to slide on, wear, tuck away your hands in.

And I believe it more because I got to talking gear with a combat veteran I know one day, very much not a fashion kid, but I mentioned I was thinking about copping it and the statistic, and he was all like, "oh, you know about Polartec? Yeah, I believe that." How his unit got excited whenever they issued gear with the Polartec logo, because they knew it worked.

There's also a newer version in a fire resistant grid Power Dry (versus the Classic Micro of the original) with thumb loops added and a different form factor for the kangaroo pocket. More functional and less comfycore.

Like with all surplus stuff, check the NSN for authenticity. (NSNs are basically military SKUs, specifying a particular set of specifications for gear. Each size is a different NSN, and you should be able to Google them up. Pay no more than $25 for either.

I really, really want these Tyvek and neoprene trends to die. It's not even so much new materials as it is using unintended materials - which, by all means, I'm too much of a Margiela* fan to protest at that. But have it make sense somehow. Have a reason for it.

UEG, who I think started it with the Tyvek, might have a reason for it - but it's a garbage reason: to the extent its manifesto is coherent philosophy it's retch inducing. It's the 2010s and people are still talking about cleanliness and purity, *and* yoking it to basic bitch takes on the ephemerality of life, and using postal envelope materials that degrade to turn all that into garments? Like no. No. Cleanliness and purity are death concepts, and any actually lucid conception of ephemerality in the 21st century has to not be so perennially and personally weepy; to be so is actually a shirking from the realistic prospect that we will live to participate in the extinction of our species, and the certainty that our way of life, "lifestyle," will become impossible. It acts like personal death, the most boring and basic thing, is the sole necessity facing human consciousnesses right now. As if life wasn't what mattered.

Garments like that piss all over time, over what we face. They just fall apart. Every last generic sweat chamber Gore-Tex jacket turned out today is a precious thing, because in thirty years we probably won't be able to make ePTFE membranes, but with luck and/or good construction it might still be keeping one of us dry and alive. And, conversely, objects actually designed to wear into themselves, to take on a patina, to wear and *last* - they're valuable, too, because they show their duration and their experiences, the most reliable sustainable source of meaning we have. Accreted life.

*Pic is MMM Line 0 (Artisinal/couture) A/W '06. The jacket took 103 hours to produce and sold for $15k.

Neoprene on jackets is just annoying and bad, a self-sustaining hype reaction by every last dipshit with rich friends and no ideas thinking he, too, needs to be putting out MA-1s that feel kind of like a wetsuit with slightly different meaningless symbols printed on the sleeve than every other dipshit putting out MA-1s that feel kind of like a wetsuit.

Somebody give me a boiled wool-reflective yarn blend grid knit commando sweater with X-Pac reenforcements and a concealed front pocket array - two napoleons and a kangaroo. And X-Pac around the thumb loop holes. Or something.

Lol Patagonia, pic is how they're advertising it (and the fact they're giving away the process so other manufacturers can make cleaner suits) on the site.

It's the primary component in Gore-Tex and many other waterproof/breathable fabrics.

>we won't be able to make
Civilization's going to shit, basically. Production of all these high-tech textiles requires lots of, usually, non-renewable resources and energy. Even if sustainably sourced alternatives are developed - like, see the Yulex discussion above* - they still are only viable in large scale, centralized, energy hungry industrial processes.

Well, we'll just use sustainable energy for that, yeah? That's the other half of the vicious** circle we're in. The global political and economic order is a fucking mess falling apart more and more every day. It's not just a matter of the "political will" not being there to actually address the energy and climate crises; the institutions and processes that would do so are breaking down before our eyes. Climate and energy instability then exacerbate political instability.

Say you manage to scrabble together enough plant oil and solar panels to start making hardshells. How are you going to get the factory up and running? How will you provide for your workers when your currency is devalued and food prices are skyrocketing? How will you secure your big, centralized factory when local security forces waver between dysfunction and survival level corruption? How will you run your supply chain and get your jackets to customers or retailers when air shipment is nearly impossible, truck fuel costs are exorbitant, and the highways are nearly unmaintained and trucks frequently get robbed?

Don't think whereever you live is immune. We live in a globalized economy and no state can stand what's coming. This concerns everyone.

*And note the Yulex suits still have to be about 40% traditional neoprene, but they're working on it.
**And make no mistake, we're talking vice, corruption, wickedness. Not in some puritan Christian sense at all - if "how should we live" is the question of ethics, "in a way that doesn't make life impossible" has to be conclusion #1.

I have a different view in my opinion
My background is in polymer with a Chem. Engineering degree. I've had a co-op at a natural gas cracker where we seperate a bunch of raw materials for polymers such as 99.98 mol % polypropylene. Also did research on polymeric o-rings and textiles at the lab. I now work at a gas refinery but I've been maxing out my Roth IRA every year. I'm an anti-fed reserve, libertarian fiscal conservative kinda guy so I've actually bought about $8k in silver panda bars for the past 3.5 years. On my off hours and breaks, I daytrade a lot of penny stocks on my gambling investing account but I do feel like a huge ass market correction is coming soon, oct-nov maybe

I take the stance that even if the world goes to shit, we adapt. As long as the demand is there, supply will catch up. There isn't going to be a dark age like in after the fall of the Roman Empire. We have the internet now and there's so much tech revolution that's going on right now that even when the economy falls, innovations will NOT cease. I'm hedge for an economic collapsed but I do not believe it's going to be like Detroit/Somalia wear I live. The economic collapse that I believe will occur is the Asian boom. It's like how London was center of finance in 1700-1800s then shifted to New York in the 1900-2000s, the next shift is Shanghai 2100-2200+, but that's ages from now IMO, I'll be dead by then

One big thing in material science is 3-d printing. We're also in the mist of a wearable tech boom as well. I personally can't wait to cop me a solid watch with GPS, heart beat monitor, sleep monitor, and long battery life

We're not going to run out of energy in 30 years. Proven reserves of fossil fuels will handily outlast that, to say nothing of reserves we don't know about. And then? The market will change, sustainable sources will be much more highly developed, there may be new sources that we cannot have foreseen from today. People have been exhausting sources of energy for thousands of years. It happens.

Bumping to respond to this and talk Acronym later. One thing, though:

>the world will end

I said nothing about the end of the world. I'm talking about a prolonged period of political, economic, and ecological instability and dysfunction.

Don't do that.

Also, to be superpedantic, I didn't say anything about raincoats. What, you think humans made it thousands of years without rain protection? I was talking fabrics whose production is dependent on large scale, centralized production.

Nah I'll disagree, I'm the engineer guy. Posting during break at the moment. Since I'm somewhat apart of the distribution chain of tech wear, where I process the raw materials, I can recall that there's always demand for textile. It's one of the most waste products on earth. Cotton is expensive now, and it's been that way since China had a shortage a few years back (if I can recall correctly). Cheap plastic nylon and polyester clothes will still be here for a while since we got a huge reserve of hydrocarbons to process in the US.

If anything, when reserve do slow down in 100 years, the alternative energy scene (biofuels/wind/solar/nuclear) will take off and we'll probably focus our remaining hydrocarbon reserves for jet/space fuel. We might even have the capacity to grow our own plastics source as well. If anything, we'll see a shift into durable and nanotech wear. That's where I want to get my masters at in the next few years and focus on nano/polymer materials
