road bikes are faster.

i know you're asking how because "a bike is a bike and they all go the same speed"

but more aggresive gear ratios, carbon fiber vs steel frame, thinner tires for less resistance to road,

knobby tires don't have alot of traction on the street.

my ex-gf had a 21 speed hybrid

i used to be able to stop clip off the bike
check my phone/make a phone call

then just catch up to her in less than 10 seconds not sprinting

also most road bikes on the street have computers installed on them, which help with cadence, speed traveled, distance traveled

and rarely gps

shimano came out with a groupset that shifts for you automatically now

it's more than "just a bike"

>road bikes are faster.
It's not as significant as people make it out to be.

>but more aggresive gear ratios, carbon fiber vs steel frame, thinner tires for less resistance to road,
Carbon Fiber has only disadvantages for daily use. Damage on the frame is not visible and if it's broken you need to buy a new bike. Steel frames are a lot easier to maintain, safer and look better.
Thinner tires also don't really make a difference if the pressure is high enough.

>also most road bikes on the street have computers installed on them, which help with cadence, speed traveled, distance traveled
You have to install them on your own or pay people to do it. And you can do that with any bike.

it is, much faster

standard 26" tire at 90 psi vs 700cx23 at 120 psi slick

not only will take off faster, but will have less rolling resistance when at speed

don't forget that on high end bikes the wheels are also carbon fiber vs your chrome plated steel hoop wheels

>Carbon Fiber has only disadvantages for daily use

doesn't matter, faster is faster
most road bikes are stored in door anyways someone with a $3500 orbea orca doesn't keep his bike ext to some kids schwinn

>And you can do that with any bike
it's genrally odd to see them on hybrids, bmx bikes and moutain bikes

mountain bikes have their own preferred models very different than those found on road bikes which detach from the cradle with ease

i like riding a cheap mountain bike in heavy traffic/busy city. can easily jump up on curbs or over stuff, no worries about thin wheels getting caught in streetcarrails or down in potholes. not leaning way too far forward so you're not about to fly over handlebars with cars and walkers cutting you off.

Cities have speed limits. Even for bicycles, though I doubt that your second-world American suburb keeps up with the times. If you drive too fast there's pedestrians and other cyclists you may hurt, and you'll get hurt yourself by being a tryhard edgelord trying to show off his hot wheels and then getting plastered to the side of a bus.

carbon fiber for daily use, yea right, enjoy replacing your frame every 2 years. thinner tyres also have greater rolling resistance, not less. see http://www.bikeradar.com/us/gear/article/bicycle-tires-puncturing-the-myths-29245/
there's still reasons to use thinner tyres, ie. weight and aero savings. but up to 28mm on rough roads with tight handling isn't really that bad an idea. i would not go >28mm for any road-primary use.

>>8734164

since we're talking about the bike and not the rider, going faster == efficiency. that means if i ride at the same pace on a fast bike vs a cludgy hybrid, i'm going to show up at my destination less sweaty and less out of breath. it also means i can cover more distance within a given time frame, giving me more time to do my shit and get home at a decent time. there's a lot of reasons to ride a more efficiently.

Not a fixie faggot, however I do own one and ill give my 2 cents.
In my opinion the benefits of riding a fixed gear come in two forms; the first being that there is next to no maintenance required. I never clean it, never oil/lube it and have never once even considered getting a service and each ride I never encounter any problems. The second benefit is slightly less obvious, and only noticeable once you ride one in traffic for the first time. There's some sort of psychological change that occurs when you dont have any brakes, you just begin to plan 10 steps ahead at all times because of the fear of being mashed by a car. I think this is generally the appeal to most fixie riders. It gives you a massive rush and theres a huge sense of accomplishment in getting out of sticky situations when you cant stop pedalling and have no brakes
But unless you're literally prepared to die on each ride, I wouldn't recommend
