I hate to say it but I agree with you... David seems nice enough a bloke but I remember when he first started posting in the styleforum thread it was just cringe worthy the fits he put together, just basically slapping any ol second hand yohji shit together. He represented my biggest issue with people wearing yohji, most think it's easy.

Guys like him basically fucked up the second hand market by paying just about any price and encouraged others to buy stuff from rakuten and attempt to sell on ebay for ridiculously inflated prices... selling second hand stuff more expensively than sale stock of new collection is just fucking stupid.

Actually not David, that entire styleforum thread was cancer. Just check it out to see examples of what I'm bitching about with the random slapping together of yohji.

To be fair, David doesn't actually sell, he merely buys. It's guys like that Dantebykiko idiot who buys 100 dollar Y's for men suits that are 10 years old and puts it on ebay for 600. Even if he doesn't sell it, which he never does at that price, other people follow suit and creates a ridiculous price bubble.

Worst part is, remember this is second hand, so NONE of it helps Yohji Inc at all.

>>8698465

>>8699149
Y's for men and Coming soon have been long defunct. Y's was largely a more wearable interpretation of YYPH runway, by that I mean the cuts were usually less exaggerated and you wouldn't feel out of place at a business meeting in a Y's suit.

It's debatable how much control Yohji has these days given the relinquishing of financial control after the GFC and the fact that his assistants have been with him for literally decades. I'm just surprised he hasn't done an Ann D yet... could be he still loves it could be that it's contractual obligation.

Oh no, a multinational luxury producer is participating in normal markets?!
How awful.
Good thing Yohji doesn't give a fuck.
One of the most reliable sentiments in the Yohji Yamamoto mythos is his confliction with his involvement in the luxury consumer market and his intimate perception on how clothing should be approached.
Surprise surprise, he doesn't enjoy adolescent men throwing bags of money at his feet.

But my comment was if you look at the rest of the campaign, the cotton hakama and shirt actually seem like they're moving within the still.

I have that same hakama and it's probably just me projecting how it moves onto the still.

I quite like the pic related to, the guys seems short but pulls it off really well as being tall can be an advantage when it comes to yohji, especially the coats/jackets with wider cuts around the chest and waist.

There's a lot to say about this collection. I like to imagine...
You know when Yohji was first received by the West he was immediately cast into the realm of 'that Japanese designer'. you know, kind of faceless through the 'japanese' title.
It's a bit childish but I like to think with SS99 (which you should put into youtube right now) he was just all 'Fuck your western traditions then' and turned the age-old European martial ceremony intro a strip tease.
There's actually a lot more to the collection but I like thinking maybe that's also a part of it.

Apparently he was a sales associate at a Yohji store a while ago, but he's just a student (japanese history major) and the only reason he was in Paris for a show or two was because his girlfriend at the time (pic related) went to school in Paris and worked for Yohji (saw some photos of her backstage with Yohji during fittings on kiko's instagram around the fw14 show)

He said he might have another opportunity to work for Yohji within the company soon but is only considering it because he still has to go to school

It's so weird. The relationship with Frankfurt Ballet school and Japanese designers. I actually think they've conscripted a lot of other too but the ones that come to mind for me are Issey and Yohji.
I've also read some mad shit talking on Frankfurt Ballet school which has been pretty interesting.

But fair enough, which collection have you really liked?

I completely agree with the buying for the sake of buying comment. The fact that he lists every item by the collection just seems unnecessary and adds credit to your point about the "collecting" mentality.

Well I just thought the outfit and the lady wearing it went very well together and was beautiful, and the dramatic music added to the effect.

People can't always exactly articulate why they find something to be breathtaking, what elements in what they're looking at evoke such a response, etc.

>"It [art] creates a vocabulary of meaning that transcends language. (Different mediums like music gives one an experience that language cannot. Therefore, our response to art isn’t always rational or expressible.)"

Quote is obviously about art and the whole art vs. fashion / is fashion art discussion is a whole other thing but this is what I mean, sometimes I can't exactly explain what I'm feeling and why u know?

Although maybe related I used to learn piano as a kid and my mom would always play classical / orchestral music and I remember I heard that song alot while hanging around the house

'lady wearing it went very well together and was beautiful, and the dramatic music added to the effec'
I can appreciate that to you this means something, but for example. What in the music, what in the clothing, what in the movement makes you feel the chill in your spine and why?
Do you possess those nodes?

>People can't always exactly articulate why they find something to be breathtaking, what elements in what they're looking at evoke such a response,
Of course not, and I wouldn't dare ask that much, but you have to understand what you're providing is next to worthless.

Also I just realized that Rei Issey and Yohji have all at one point worked closely with dancers / dance institutions

How interesting, maybe we're onto something culturally. Or maybe dance and fashion were just closely connected in the zeitgeist during those times?

I went to a Japanese fashion exhibition last year and remember an Issey show being played where the models were like dancing forest nymphs (?) or something, anyone know the season? would love to see it again

recent one in japanese called all about yohji yamamoto, looked through it when i was in japan, lots and lots of #rare photos and alot of text as well... hopefully there will be an english translation

there is also a new one coming out within a few months called Yamamoto & Yohji

Pic is from All about Yohji Yamamoto, YUNG YOHJI at 25 years old working in his mother's shop. There were also photos of Yohji's student work at Bunka including the one that won him the So-En award for his first trip to Paris. My favourite was a group photo during 6.1 the men of all the models with their name, age, and occupation listed. It even showed that one Yohji Paris PR fella who had to sub in for one of the models who had to go to the hospital because he got in a drunk fight with one of the members of NTM lol

Seconding this, if you have access to a university online library / archive there is tons of material to be found, I've found some articles from the 80s that were archived and it's really interesting to read about how Yohji was taken at the time. Also major publications like New York Times will usually have a good archive of articles, they have a good amount of Yohji related ones too
