Are desktops better than laptops? I have a desktop since it's cheaper, can perform better for less cash, and didn't really take my laptop to class when I had one.

I'm out of college now, but I never took my laptop to class once. anytime we used PC's we went to labs to use high end machines, and I like taking notes by hand.

desktops are always a better choice, especially now that tablets are so cheap and mobile, and pretty much anything a tablet can do you can use your smartphone for.

Firstly, you don't need that much laptop and you don't have to spend that much for a laptop with those specs; if you have the money and want to on a Macbook Pro because you like the form/the screen is awesome then fine, just be aware that you don't /have/ to.

Well, the macbook pro is a good machine for what you're planning on using it for even at base specs, if you have the money and you want to upgrade you can but you certainly don't have to, it'll be more than fine as it is. In my own (subjective) opinion if you do have the money to upgrade I'd do the processor first (since you're planning on using it for video) and then the SSD to 512 but that's as far as you have to go.

More verbosely:
You can no longer upgrade the ram/storage on macbooks and keep your warranty (in fact you can't upgrade the ram at all and upgrading the storage has been made considerably more difficult) so there may be a point in upgrading the processor if you're planning on doing intensive tasks on it (like video work, or even if you use Chrome and like having fifty tabs open at a time), so spend as much as you have and comfortably want to upgrading that.

256gb SSD storage is definitely enough, because you can just store the OS and your most commonly used programs/files on it and buy a portable HD for everything else. If you think it's not, spending the extra 300 to go to 512GB SSD storage will suit you for however long you'll be using it. It's not strictly /necessary/, but you can if you want to. $800 for 1TB SSD storage is massively overkill.
Apart from that, I'd recommend thinking about the Care plan or whatever it's called and whether or not it's worth it, as I'm not sure what their warranty's like normally.

The touchpad for the macbook line is ergonomically better for me than using a mouse, and it works incredibly well. It's not as fast as using a mouse, but I like it better.

Also, using an external keyboard is just ridiculous in most situations that would require a laptop. An external mouse is more acceptable, but I made a decision to not shoulder that burden.

My ideal is using a desktop with the mouse in my non-dominant hand and a decent keyboard, but I love laptops too much.

Stallman would be disappoint, but it's what I like.

Alienware laptops (and probably desktops) are totally piece of crap. I'm going to be pretty honest here. I just bought an Alienware Area-51 M15X. This is my agent account ID: 483666 and this is the agent Order: PC-615285A. Bought it last november but since i don't live in US, it needed around 3 weeks to arrive here. Already tried this laptop for one week and I want to give it 1 out of 10 for rating. No hype here for my rating. Totally honest. 1. The keyboard is a piece of crap. Sorry for my excessive language but it's true. I have another laptop, it's Sony VAIO and vaio keyboard is 100x better than alienware. Every time I typed 20-30 letters on alienware, the keyboard didn't respond properly for 1-2 time (for example, i want to write "keyboard", but although I properly typed it, on the screen it showed "keyoard". So i need to keep pressing backspace after typed some letters). It doesn't respond well, that's my point. The worst keyboard ever, nothing compared to VAIO and even Acer.

2. Now this is the main problem. I bought this laptop for around $4,000 and yet i can't play any games. Why? Here's why:

For example I have just bought a Fallout 3 game, i installed it. Then even if I was just browsing, it still gave me BSOD message and then it crashed. I can only avoid the blue screen of death if I uninstall the game. Then few days later I tried to install GTA4 on the laptop, no luck. Still same result. Basically it's not only if I play the game, but AFTER I INSTALLED THE GAME, it gave me BSOD. You think this is due to Vista? Think again. If you just stay at home and play games, build a desktop and get an ultra sharp, filco ninja, and a g400. Then get an iPad or iPhone for browsing in bed.

If you're poor, get a t60 or t400 and put some ram and an ssd in it.

If you just want an average computer that you won't have to fix, get a used Mac Pro, mini, or mbp. If you don't like osx, install Linux or whatever you want. Most artists use these cause they're dead easy to use and usually don't have many problems.

Also I should add: You mentioned PC's, but the fact is Apple only exceeded in their laptop designs, their desktops and iPhone are bland as hell and always have been, some of the iPod models were pretty cool back in the day though.
Also, Apple actually does the whole usability and the comfort of use lot better than any other company and in a way that adds to the design, so that's actually a plus for Macs.
