I'm currently on vacation in Mykonos, Greece and I ran into a shop carrying Nomos. I'd never seen a Nomos in person and I was just so pleasantly surprised by the look, feel, and quality that I just had to grab one. Super great price and tax/ duty free!

This isn't my picture, but I did all the same mods as this guy except for the crown guards and I have a sapphire crystal instead of acrylic.
It's an invicta 8926 base with the nh35a movement. Filed off the invicta logo on the side. Replaced bezel insert with an aftermarket Rolex sub bezel. Hands and dial are from Dagaz. I also soaked the rotor in paint stripper to remove the last traces of invicta from the watch.
75 dollars for the watch, 10 for the bezel, and 60 for the hands and dial. I also have a 'vintage' leather NATO coming from cheapest NATO straps.
I made a watch with a shit name into something pretty to look at and I had fun doing it.

So I have it in my head I want to sell them both and go to a Rolex, with the Explorer II in mind. Am I making a mistake? It seems like the zenith is probably the nicest of the 3, but I don't wear it much so I tend to think the explorer will fit as an all occasion watch. Pic is the breitling

Yes.
Your Primero movemente is way better and more sofisticated than the Rolex. Specialy if it's a calendar as I tend to belive by the picture you posted.

Rolexes aren't bad but neither as good as pleople usually belive. They are more and more becoming a high end fashion brand, with their name on front, where Zenith has, IMHO, a better pedigre among true aficionados.

I have a Rolex. I like it. But a prefer by a lot, my Zenith Stratos Striking 10th.

I don't care for Breitling with the exception of their straps, wich I put on my Panerai.

Don't. You're overrating the Rolex, especially with such a nice piece as that Zenith. I think you'll be happier keeping two instead of just one. The "one watch for every ocassion" doesn't work as well in practice as you might think.

>>8615393
Fucking bullshit. Rolex isn't even close to going to the fashion brand size. Their tool watch heritage is kept alive by their ridiculously conservative design upgrades over the years that barely change their watches. Their movements are basically the most robust in the entire industry, which is amazing considering their volume. They also have some of the most impressive achievements in mechanical durability, mainly in depth rating.

Yes, there are those fucking retarded ones out there crusted with gems, but you can get gems slapped on pretty much any watch (a great deal of the Rolexes you see on rappers and shit are modified by jewelers, though you can definitely buy several jeweled models from Rolex, too).

Zenith a better pedigree among true aficionados? You're full of shit. Zenith has it's El Primero movement. That's it. It is a truly impressive piece of watchmaking history and I love the El Primero watches, but Rolex proceeded to improve on that base design after using it for several years (notably with the first vertical clutch and other things to increase chronograph durability and make servicing easier and cheaper).

People forget and think it's just gem-encrusted bullshit, but they have serious watchmaking chops and accomplishments to back themselves up. There is a stupidly large circlejerk on both sides.

I bought a shitty Submariner replica, just to see if I actually liked the aesthetic of the watch, which I do. The movement fucked itself, so I took it apart and can't be assed to put it back together, so I'm probably going to pick up a Steinhart Ocean One.

The Rolex logo is really not that cool. I guess it was interested to lie to complete strangers and tell them that it was real, but the shortcomings of a replica watch are just too overwhelming.

Oh, I'm sorry. Did I rustled your jimmies Rolexfag? Because for no other reason you shoud post a fucking ass long post to contradict an opinion from someone you won't be able to change.

Second, they ARE becoming a high end fashion brand. That's the principal reason so many knockoffs are rolling around and people who knows jackshit about watches lurks for Rolex because "muh rolecs".

Third, Rolex chrongraph Vs Primero movements?? That's all you can say?? Of course they are both workhorses of their brands, but have you ever considered all the other developpments of each?? Zenith has patented a lot of new exciting movements and other production technics (new tourbillon Hurricane, new classical gong module for the repetition, new foudrayant module, new escapement, new bubble crystal) while Rolex only improves their watches "slightly" each year.

Fourth, FINISHING. Whenever I open a Rolex It depresses me the lack of true watch finishing. Zenith does a far better work.

Fifth. Fuck you for making me write this ass long post.

Gotta say, Rolex are collected, Zenith simply are not on the same level. I genuinely know nothing else beyond their El Perimero... whatever that even is.

I dont dispute that Zenith may make good movements, didn't they actually make Rolex movements at one point?

Rolex as a high fashion brand is a bit whacky, I don't understand that the popularity propels them onto the wrists of people who don't appreciate wtachmaking but merely branding. But that doesn't dilute Rolex's reputation and solid resale values.

>> No.8621093

Yeah, absolutely masterpieces.

I'm lucky to have the 5001 movement.

I don't recognise the movement on yours, which one is it for?

>> No.8621152

>>8621063
Most of those Rolex collectors are, in my opinion, case collectors. They eventually manage to acquire a lot of watches with the exact same movement over, and over, and over, and over... but, if you ask them (as I had with some) once they fixa their interest in the brand, they couldn't care at all if Rolex starts to make the movements out of cereal boxe's prices because, as long as it is an "authenthic" Rolex is awesome for them. You wouldn't belive the histories I heard about collectors treasuring some particular piece, even to the point of not wanting it to be opened so they won't risk having to change the "original" gasket that, when they eventually do, they discover the movement isn't the original but a cheap replacement that mimics EXACTLY the functioning and that "precious" feeling (that they value so much) of an authenthic one. This people need to open their eyes and realize that mechanical watch making is way more than collecting scarce cases.

>>Rolex solid resale values.
It's true that rollies hold their resale value but since I had never sold a watch and I probably will never will, that doesn't concerme a bit. The things I buy, I buy for life. (Except cars, but only cause I don't have enough space to store them).

My watch maker has whinged to me about his rolex customers, one guy would rather bleed because his bracelet was so old it was ocming loose at the links and actually cutting his arm as he walks... but the guy just refused because he wanted to keep it authentic hahaha

My datejust is actually a frankenstein, originally bought in 1998 but parts were replaced by new parts in a service in 2010. I don't really care but christ some people would go gah gah.

Glad you treasure your pieces but that's not most of the watch buying public.

Doesn't matter really what I feel, the point about Rolex > Zenith still stands, at the very least in that instance.

Yes, Rolex used the original El Primero movement because it was the first automatic chronograph movement ever invented.

While I agree they take some things too far, I think part of the enjoyment is retaining the history of original parts. That and, for many people, if there is an obvious way to preserve value then you should take it, you know? It's just whatever your personal philosophy is and what helps you enjoy it all more.

>>8621152
I don't really know what point you were trying to make with that movement talk, to be honest. It was a jumble to me. That said, many people value the idea that what they buy holds value. Rolex (especially vintage) people like the idea that they can basically sell a watch later on and take no loss. It's honestly a really attractive idea, but I would personally never buy a watch on that premise -- I've just seen it thrown around a lot (probably as justification for spending more on watches, hah).

I agree with the other guy and, furthermore, think that your attempted clothing analogy is off base, especially since there are several manufacturers miles above Zenith, and most people don't know about them, either. Rolex is the king of the "mid-tier" level of watch luxury, no questions asked. It's just the way things are.

>> No.8621605

>>8621541
>>8621464
No shit it isn't original. But no one would say it's fake or counterfeit. That's literally how people treat everything ever. "Yes, X thing is real but, no, it doesn't have all original parts." It's just that many other things you're used to the idea of that for are ones that, practically, it doesn't matter as much. Having all original parts for a car that you've used for 40 years straight is probably not going to work so well, but you can get away with that with a well-serviced watch. There are difference tolerances and stresses involved.

I agree that many vintage collectors are pretty freaking nuts, but I think that a lot of the confusion here just stems from you guys not really understanding the subject matter. I mean no offense by that, but it's how it appears.

>> No.8621619

>>8621605
with anything "collectible" you get into a whole new level of scrutiny. old cars and stuff can also deal heavily in original parts. it's just that you can use the parts in a watch every single day for a longer time than other things like cars. that's why some of the things don't seem to match up when you consider things like parts.

whenever you look at any different hobby it's a whole new world full of its own quirks and eccentricities.

>> No.8621644

Let me simplify it: most people (not all) that buy Rolexes are in love with cases and the way they look and the wow factor in others. I'm against all this and for me they are naive.

In the other part of the balance there are people who are primarly in love with movements and their engineering and finishing, and expect cases to be made accordly. These last ones may also buy Rolex but they know the brand (and their pieces) are not even half what Rolex want you to belive and don't consider them high end cause they aren't. They will also value more Zenith (for example) because all what I already explain.

What Rolex lacks in finishing they make up for in durability. You can knock them for finishing but not for their engineering. They're not pretending to be something they're not, or else they would go full retard like so many AP watches nowadays.

I think you underestimate Rolex and focus too much on the lowest common denominator of consumer. Taking that argument to its logical conclusion is a gimme, too, since obviously far more people know Rolex than Zenith which means that a Zenith customer is more likely to be more informed.

Sinn makes up for it by ridiculously over-engineering their pieces (because, of course, they're German). The classic example of this is filling the watch with argon gas, which is why you will see the little "Ar" on so many of the dials. Instead of modifying the movement they try to give value in other areas (and, considering their reputation, I'd say that the watch community is, at large, convinced). If you think that makes up for it, cool, they're pretty nice watches. If not, oh well, try something else.

SNKL43. It comes with an oyster-style bracelet. The "croc" leather band (it's really embossed cow hide, croc is quite expensive) is from deBeer, and I believe it can be found on Amazon or ebay if you look around. Cheers.

I know, right? Here is the watch I got from my father for getting into St. Barths Uni. It was my first choice uni.

Great to hear you got into your first choice uni. What are you studying?
