That depends on you. You probably want a diver? They descend from the Rolex Submariner. With 400$ you can get a nice watch, but you're still at the entry level. I'd buy different affordables instead of one but that's just me.

Check out Orient Makos, Orient Rays, things like that.

Category speaking, you'll have divers, chronographs, digitals, military, dress, aviator, and many in between. See what you might like.

It's pretty popular and very affordable. Now you need to decide whether you want a quartz one that'll be very precise, or a mechanical that'll be a mini box of gears but will be 15s off the right time every day. I like the gears.

>> No.8503681

>>8503666
Ray and Mako have different diameters, just take a smaller one if you're skinny or young. And mechanicals are less precise than quartz, so they'll be within 30s of the right time by the end of a day. People who want the accuracy go for quartz or radio controlled watches, watch people just use their phone for that, ironic but rather true.

>> No.8503687

>>8503666
It's cool, you have to learn somewhere.

There are mechanical watches and quartz watches.
Quartz-movement watches use a tiny quartz tuning fork connected to a microchip to tick precise seconds, powered by a battery or solar power or other things. Because of this electric operation, they're very accurate, with a shitty $10 watch even being accurate to run 5 seconds slow or fast a year.
Mechanical watches use a wound up spring to turn gears in sequence to keep time, and are much more complicated machines. They can be powered by a swinging weight that turns as you move your arm, automatically winding the spring (hence "automatic") or by manually winding the spring from the crown. These watches aren't bought for accuracy, because those spinning gears will never be as precise as a vibrating quartz tuner, so they're instead bought for appreciation of the engineering required to create them.

TLDR quartz watches are cheaper and more accurate, mechanicals are fancy but more expensive and less accurate, and can break down more easily.

Another two important things to consider when buying a watch are the crystal and caseback. Most watches use either acrylic, mineral glass, or sapphire crystal to cover the dial. Mineral glass is cheaper, but sapphire crystal won't be scratched by damn near anything but a diamond, so nicer watches (and ones that will last longer) have sapphire crystals. The caseback is a matter of water resistance and ease of service. Cheaper watches have snap-on casebacks, while good diver watches and higher end pieces have screwed on or screw down casebacks.

Regardless of if you go quartz or mechanical, for anything above $200 US, look for sapphire crystal and screwed casebacks.

You can get the Ray for something like $150 on Amazon, I think. And that is a fair price.

The other have been mostly right when it comes to the glass, but there are other considerations. Some watches specifically use a mineral type because of what they're used for (the Omega moon watch line -- sapphire shatters into many pieces in a way that would not be good in space). Others like how you can buy a cheap compound to easily buff out scratches on mineral glass.

All of that said, sapphire is, in general, far and away superior. But, in a cheaper watch like this, don't get hung up on it. Most are more durable than you think and the things like mineral can be easily fixed like I said (I think the popular one is called "PolyWatch" or something and is like $7 a tube).

The Orient Mako/Ray is one of the most highly recommended starter watches out there. You can't really go wrong with it.

All I'm saying is that it isn't high-end just because you paid a lot for it.

As a counterexample, look at this quartz watch: solar powered with power reserve, fully jeweled thermocompensated perpetual calendar movement accurate to 10 seconds a year, all in a brutally beautiful case.

That's "high end" quartz. Or, you know, you could pay more and get a fuckin' Tag with a second hand that doesn't even hit the marks.

Mechanicals and automatics are for wankers who masturbate to watch internals and like to fiddle with their watches 6x a day to adjust the time, since they will be off by 20 second every day, more so if you don't wear it daily. Their yearly maintenance often costs more than the price of the watch.

Digital watches are for manchildren and neckbeards, there's no way to make them look good with anything unless you're attractive enough to shrug them off. The battery lasts so long that you'll end up trashing it long before it runs out.

Quartz are practical, inexpensive, require zero maintenance and only lose about 4 seconds in an entire month.
Quartz analog is truly the master race.

No, you don't (and, seriously, ignore anything said in troll posts like that). If you have an expensive, high-end watch, you "should" get it serviced around every 5-10 years (it varies based on your personal beliefs and how closely you follow the "official" stuff that is inside your watch manual). It isn't a requirement but is highly advised. For most people in threads like this it really isn't something to worry about. If you have a $100ish watch or whatever it's cheaper to buy a new one than get a full service.

You have to consider that there are Rolexes out there that have run for 50 years with no problems and are still going strong. To be frank, if it isn't something that you already knew about then you're probably not someone in the position to need it based on what you have unless you got something vintage.

I might add if you are a diver (and there are a few of us out there) who likes to use a dive watch (and there's no reason since you should have a dive computer) you need to get the seals replaced every few years for sure. I find quartz helps with that since you can just get the gaskets replaced and a new pressure test at battery change time.

Also you really shouldn't get the solar version. If I wanted +-10s/year, I'd get a GS since I like the detail much more. Plus they come with domed crystals, the AR coating is arguably better and the bracelets are much better. The only selling point on the Chronomasters for me is the +-5s/year.

Watches are believed by many experts to be in a similar context as houses before the subprimes, ie overpriced and the bubble is about to burst. You won't find a watch that appreciates in value, those who say that have tangible arguments.
But go for a genuine Rolex if you want something that more or less keeps its value.

Lots of watches, but all pretty casual. I have a few black tie weddings this summer, any thoughts on a watch to go with a tux? or at least buy from a very reputable place (which, obviously, will make it harder to hit that price point). avoid ebay unless you're an expert. vintage rolexs are, honestly, themselves a bubble market. their prices have gone up so much. i wouldn't be surprised if they hold value okay but i worry because of how astronomical it was. not sure how well it will be after the bubble pops (better than most watches, of course, but we shall see). >>8521979

I agree with the Rolex bubble, but think there's actually a point for every luxury watch from a reputable brand, where it holds its value quite well.
For example I don't think the first coax Aqua Terras are depreciating any more and will approximately hold their value for the next ten years at least. (especially since they have that amazing 10 year service cycle)

black or brown leather but you could be bold and even see if there is a Nato strap that matches the gold bezel and the white dial.
I would say a blue and white striped one would look decent.

it looks indeed vintage so a nato strap would make it look like it's some sort of roughed up vintage seaman kind of watch. it gives off these vibes imho. the only truely ugly thing about it are these scratches in the bezel and the really ugly metal links.

if only this watch was silver. gold colored watches never look that good.

Really? This is interesting and not what I assumed at all. I'm very unfamiliar with watches (I wear them rarely), so I just go after something that catches my eye and fits well. I have smaller wrists than you and 42 is ok. On the edge, but still fine from the outsider's point of view. If you're really bothered, go for Japanese watches, they are generally smaller - so that's Seiko, Citizen and Casio. Or you can go vintage, smaller too but may be more expensive.

Seiko quartz chronos go for about 120 euros I think, and vintage manual wind chrono were going for about the same price a few months ago.

Casio is great, I had a chrono like your Fossil and it was 40mm.

because Fossil is a fashion brand. They put $10 Chinese movements in $30 Chinese cases with a $5 Chinese bracelet and sell it for $120. They have literally nothing to do with matchmaking.

Seiko and Citizen develop everything by themselves down to the lubricants used in the movement. Even at low price points you still get the benefits of their 100 year experience in watchmaking. Get the same lubricants they developed for decades and also put in their $8000 watches. Also their low end movements surpass an equally priced Chinese movement by miles. Same goes for the casing, where Seiko was the first company not to use nickel anymore and you can still be sure everything is what it says it is. There's also the manufacturing itself, which is much more intricate when closer inspected (with a lupe), which is down to the technological edge and experiences from producing millions of watches each year.

It is also one of the watches with about as good value as it gets. It has a domed AR treated sapphire, a fully decorated 28k bph in-house movement, I think it has a screw down crown and nice detail.

I'd prefer the Grand Classic, but this is really close to what you posted. Also these are all big watches, so nothing for sort of small wrists like mine.
