That was actually pretty awful.

It looks like they got asked to make a video on short notice so they grabbed a bunch of random shit the dude had in his garage and then spent the rest of the video budget on food and clothes that they wanted to eat and wear after the shoot but to justify the purchases they zoomed in and out on them a bunch and did some slow mo takes then shoehorned it all into the video.

Also feels mad overproduced with a sort of synthetic / plastic feel to everything, reminds me of a lot of fashion film crap like the type of stuff that SSENSE puts out when they do videos. When you put all that focus on the clothes it ends up feeling like a commercial.

Lean isn't that incredible himself but at least he has somewhat new and original ideas. Everything I just watched I've seen before in countless fashion films and it's not the least bit original or interesting. Also feels like a really pathetic attempt at being edgy with the cross of product shots mixed with organic material which has been done countless times before and to much greater effect.

Lean creates his own rules / universe and then expands from there, this guy works within a rigid and already existing framework: I'm a rapper, I like fashion, I want to be edgy, lets mix it all together in the most formulaic way possible. Meanwhile Lean is creating his own vocabulary, yes he takes the already established aesthetic of the early 00's but he then creates and curates his own interpretation of it which is probably why it's so alluring. Great example of the fundamental difference between the two. I suspect the guy you posted simply walked into a current boutique and picked out clothing for the video that is currently considered cool or on trend. In contrast Lean reaches back into the early 00's and grabs onto things that even in their own time were considered somewhat off or whack (see: the Gucci bucket hat) and resurrects them in a way, almost like giving them a second chance at being cool. This is because Lean himself is actually cool, the clothing gives him the means to express this coolness and vision. In contrast I am almost positive the guy you posted simply walked into a popular boutique like l'eclaireur and bought a bunch of "fashion shit" in a hope that it was the clothes themselves that would make him cool and loan him some of their cultural cachet.

That is the key difference I see between these two people that this guy is a follower and Yung Lean is a leader. I think you are probably an edgy and contrarian person who feels a need to kill sacred cows so to speak in order to define your own individuality. You envision yourself as someone who is enlightened and against trends but in this tangled and contrived process you have accidently championed someone who likely represents everything you posture yourself against. A stupid popular rapper that follows trends in videos, music, and style to a T.

Sad.
