Thanks, but I want that one for its 5 ticks per second chrono hand. The only other quartz watches that do that of which I'm aware that are available are the SSB series. Unfortunately, they are mostly unimpressive and all have the unnecessary 24hr dial.

If you can find a pilot-style chrono with the VK67 in it, then I'll be impressed. So far, I've only found it in Alba by Seiko and various OEM (Invicta Tungsten Chrono, Isssey Miyake, etc.)

my leisure time watch.

>> No.8365448

>>8364480
Most of the following is theory and some of it may be overemphasized by the obessesed:
>dirt entering through crown slot
Supposedly, despite gaskets, exceedingly small amounts of dust and dirt can enter the watch every time the crown is pulled out. Also, temperature and pressure gradients can draw dust in and out during thermal expansion.

>mechanical erosion
The pivots of each wheel are tiny and each is held in a synthetic jewel, reducing friction but not completely eliminating it. Allowed to run for years as grit collects in the oils and they dry out, the oils become less of a lubricant and more of an abrasive. In practice, there exist unjeweled mechanical watches from decades past that still run accurate to plus/minus 30 secs a day. But since watches are often heirloom pieces and owned long-term, erring on the side of caution is not a bad idea.

>magnetism
A demagnetizer fixes this quickly. Most modern watches use a hairspring that is at least somewhat resistant to magnetism (elinvar, invar, nivarox, etc.)

>water intrusion
Immediate attention required.

question regarding automatic watches

1) I've read that they are not as accurate as quartz and that the can be +/- secs per day,
I've also read that the watch can be "regulated" to make it as accurate as possible.
is this permanent or do you have to have it regulated on a monthly/year;y basis

2)Can this

>> No.8366656

>>8366581
Regulating isn't exactly permanent but it's not temporary either. The accuracy of a mechanical watch is dependent on the period of oscillation of the balance wheel, which in turn is dependent on lots factors: the force of the mainspring, the swinging motion of one's arm, the position in which the watch rests the most, etc. The sorts of things vary from one day to the next for the wearer. Even Rolexes, which all receive COSC certification, will be off a few seconds per day. Regulation can make a mechanical watch more accurate overall, but it's virtually impossible for a mechanical watch to be consistently as accurate as a quartz.

So no, you don't have to regulate on a regular basis.

In theory, it's easy. You just move a lever to change the effective length of the hairspring. But it's easy to mess up. If you don't have steady hands, you might slip and damage the hairspring and then you can be sure your watch won't keep time quite as well.

The lever will likely only need to be moved a tiny bit, so little you may not notice that you've moved it. There's also the matter of how you'll know if the watch is actually more accurate after you've "regulated". You may have overshot the happy medium. Some advocate resetting the time, wearing it for a day, and then checking with a more accurate time source. Actual watchmakers use a timegrapher. Some DIYrs use Audacity coupled with a pickup mic.

Honestly, if your watch is within 30 secs a day, I wouldn't bother regulating it.

It's hand finished, Sapphire crystal front and back, double AR coated and domed front one, excellent craftsmanship all round, decorated Miyota 9010 movement with 28000bph and it can be regulated well beyond COSC ETA 2824-2.

You can find these for around 700-800 but you won't find something similar below 1.2k and even then the crystal probably wouldn't be domed.

Also fyi the Grand Classic is US DM and the Chronomaster JDM

Also that one should have had a cleaner bezel and rounder face and it should have a swanneck. Not him though.

>> No.8372598

>>8372560

Most skeleton watches are regarded as the fedora of time-pieces. I don't like that concept either, because I find watch mechanics interesting. Skeleton watches are generally less versatile than regular watches as the transparent face artificially clutters the watch in a way - making it harder to read the time in comparison to conventional watches. The watches tend to be more often than not a little bulky, and many skeleton watch manufacturers incorporate edgy face designs to partially hide some of the mechanics - unlike the omega you posted.

Find a nice shaped skeleton watch that's easy to read and has a simple and clean appearance. I'll post some if I come across any.

Could be worse though. You could have a mundaine.

I highly doubt that. 100$ movement somehow amounts to a 600£ watch? The watch should be 400$ at most. All in all it's way too much.

Also spending that kind of money on a non-HAQ quartz watch is also very questionable.

It's actually a good company for watches in general. It belongs to Seiko and has slightly worse finish than the equivalent Seiko, but is also cheaper. All in all it's always good value (like Seiko).

I just googled and it should be at least 150$ (including shipping). So go for it.

They share the movement oftentimes, but finish is always worse on Orient. Therefore Orient is always a little cheaper in all segments:

Seiko 5 70$ish -- Orient 3 Star 50$ish
Grand Seiko 2k-3k - Royal Orient 1.5k
Seiko SARB 400$ - Orient Star WZ00 400$

And that also goes for single watches:
Seiko Prospex SBDB001 2.5k - Orient World Stage WV011EL 1k
Seiko SKX 160$ - Orient Ray 100$

And since both offer great value the Seiko is almost always the better finished watch. The most obvious it really is with the SARB and WZ00.

All in all both are great watch makers, but Seiko really uses Orient as a cheaper alternative. But you can't just say that Seiko is always better since there a fringe cases where you might be able to afford a higher tiered Orient model than a Seiko at a given budget.

also make that Grand Seiko Price 2k-7k. I came up with 2-3k, mostly because I was looking too much at their high accuracy quartz GS lately, forgetting the Hi-Beats and Spring Drives. Also I just looked it up and there are also 3k Royal Orients.

Not that it matters to the point I was making.

No. This is blatantly false: just google it.

I prefer not to talk about "finish" myself because it's a highly subjective buzzword but to say that it is "always" worse is just outright dumb.

>Therefore Orient is always a little cheaper in all segments:
The problem with this is that you've given your premises unsupported. But then you go on to offer price comparisons as if your conclusion is your premise. It's almost as if you think a lower price *necessitates* a lower quality.

I could have sworn I've seen some Seiko movements without the Seiko branding in Orient watches. I'm still not convinced, but since I can't find one at this moment, you are apparently right, at least to the degree that it's mostly inhouse movements.

>finish is a buzzword
No it's not, it describes what you see under a magnifier, like the edges of the hands, the detail parts of the dial and the transitions from brushed to polished SS parts.

>The problem with this is that you've given your premises unsupported.
No it's not unsupported I've given plenty of examples you could have just googled and compared for yourself. Look here:
SARB033 and Orient Star WZ0031DV (rare occasion where the same watch has about the same price and is not cheaper for Orient):
http://forums.watchuseek.com/f71/comprehensive-comparative-review-5-watches-38-40mm-range-848799.html

>tl;dr You talk like a fag and your shit is pants-on-head retarded.
Do you really have to start insulting? Are you an Orient collector or something? You are way too mad.
I said they both have good value and that's why price is indicative of the quality you'll get. You can't compare the more expensive Seiko directly to the Orient since it will obviously be better because it was more expensive (which they objectively are). If you have 130$ and want a diver, I'd tell you get a Orient and if you have 170$, I'd tell you to get the Seiko, in both cases you would get the most for your money.

also the question was:

So what is your guys opinion on Steinhart and their GMT II?

Since Rolex design patterns ran out other companies can legitimately almost clone the watch if they feel like it.

Steinhart (German company, producing in Switzerland) produces well made homages (to use a friendly word) with good materials like domed sapphire crystals, ceramic/sapphire bezels, good lume and good detail. On top of that, they use actually good movements like the ETA 2824-2 or in this case the ETA 2893-2.

Yep that's the problem, I'd totally buy it for 500€ without giving it a second thought, if it had the 2893-2, the ceramic bezel and the domed sapphire, but wouldn't look exactly like the Rolex.

Why can't they into own designs.
