I don't get the flip flops Americans wear everywhere.
In Europe they'd be avoided to begin with, but even if you would wear them it would be exclusively on the beach. They're as much beach wear as a bikini.

Americans like to be seen as casual

Trying to look good here makes people dislike you, because they see you as vain

especially if you're a guy, because vanity is a "feminine" trait.
I'm laughing my ass off at those pictures of the white bitches all dressed the same, it's completely tru and absolutely hilarious.
There are exceptions to this, mind you, especially in the cities, where you can typically find a number of different cliques that dress differently and put in effort.

>> No.8359583

But that makes no sense. You're also the capitalistic consumerist hell of the Earth. You love brands. You love defining yourself by the things you own or the products you buy.
Why are clothes an exception for you?

Actually the president's team looked at this and thought "fit for throwing the first pitch out at a baseball game".

>> No.8359619

>>8359583
Well they aren't entirely.

You just have to understand that the average american is pretty much a child

Middle class americans won't buy expensive clothes

$100 for a sweater is considered absurd

Instead, they buy 3 sweaters that are $20

as for the defining ourselves by it, look at mall apparell, which is what most people dress in.

Branding everywhere. Branding without quality to back it up.

I remember one time I made muffins for some friends, and because I wanted to see how they'd come out, and they just insulted me for being a hipster.

Same when I started dressing the way I do. Apparently blacvk skinny jeans, black vans, and gray and white oxfords are "hipster"

You know how in the U.S you might get called gay for being a skinny guy who dresses well?

Well, on the other side of the ocean, that's not right at all. In fact, it's the complete opposite. Over there, the homoerotic guys are the big muscly guys. They epitomize homosexuality over there. The skinny guys are usually the norm or they're seen as what women want.

I think the issue is Americans are ignorant of the fashion world, and also everyone is terrified of being labeled as gay. For some reason, if a man dresses well (the exception being suits) everyone things you're a fag. At this point I don't care, because I like how I look and at least annoying homophobic people are less likely to talk to you.

Americans are obsessed with buying and consuming, but ONLY if it's cheap. That's probably why they don't buy expensive clothes, because they could get the "same" stuff at target for cheap (the clothing is not even remotely the same).

But actually... I can't stand the fashion there. I go to school in the bay area and I want to rip my hair out sometimes. The girls idea of fashion is mainly cat print dresses and clogs with colorful tights. Or the stupid shorts with a beanie crap.

I enjoy my rag & bone boots with celine coat and opening ceremony sweaters. They think I'm trying hard. They just don't know quality is better than quantity, I think.

But the good thing about NorCal not understanding fashion is that they price the items on consignment on brands they don't know really low. I bought NWT See By Chloe pants for $35.

As a nitpicker, I feel more comfortable in America. The older people are blissfully ignorant and the young people are too ridiculous to care about. Being a blond 6/10 in some "OMG MONOCHROME" fit is not enough for me to think you're actually fashionable. And acne has always been lackluster as fuck..So the difference between scandi and usa is scandi people try and fall short, 90% of them still shopping at places like H&M and zara while usa just doesn't care. In scandi when a girl tries to talk to me about fashion she'll blither on about alexander wang and acne, in usa I don't even have to worry about somebody engaging me.

Also one of the weird similarities between scandi and usa...the girls love fucking orange skin, bleached hair, and overplucked eyebrows.

>Crossroads. The one in Berkeley is actually pretty good sometimes. You have a bunch of international students who want to get rid of their clothes. Crossroads in Rockridge was nice too! I have been to a few in SF, people clean those ones out fast though. There are a bunch of vintage stores in the piedmont area too, I didn't really check them out though since I am trying to not buy more clothes...

I liked the Out of the Closet thrift store... it's sort of close to the union sq bart? It's near... I looked it up it's 100 Church St.

Shopping in general... I honestly don't really go to retail. But the area near Union Sq is getting a little better.

Yeah a lot of Danes wear H&M and Zara but they def do at least look better. I'd say Acne tees and their jeans are good quality, most everything else is not worth the price point. But I've seen quite a few Danes wearing really nice designer gear, like Rick, DD, ann D. But the issue with Denmark is the price of everything is so high, that fashionable stuff which already have a high price point gets even more expensive. However, you can find a lot of stuff at the Norse store that isn't insanely overpriced which is cool.

Scandinavians are also just so much more attractive.

I haven't noticed Danish women gravitating towards orange skinned bleached hair, but I was only there for a few months. Also maybe the bleached hair isn't as noticeable because so many people are already blonde.

And I'm quite surprised on the lack of engaging from Americans, I felt like Danes would never speak to you in public. It was a big no no there. People in America always talk to me for no reason, it's nice sometimes but it can get quite annoying .

One thing I disliked about a Denmark though was the lack of quality service everywhere. I only felt welcome in stores like Nag People bc the clerks there were cool and effay.

It's a great country, and Copenhagen is an awesome city. But it does have it's problems. A lot of people use bikes there, and many of the cars are older so I'm not sure how the automotive industry is. Cars are expensive as fuck there so most people use bikes or the transportation system since it's so good. You'd probably be able to get a good job working on the newer taxis (all BMW and Mercedes and shit), or even the buses / trains.

I'm not sure about the immigration system, I think it is really strict because there are so many Arabs coming in illegally. They also don't want a lot of non Danes buying up houses and land. You could probably get a work visa or something to see how you like it.

It is progressive, but there is this idea that everyone has to be the same in terms of income and the social class . People there are opposed to bragging and trying to look wealthier than everyone else. Also, there is a general dislike for immigrants from the Middle East. Most do quite like Americans, except not the American govt (as usual).

Expect to pay a lot of money for everything. Goods are expensive as hell and taxes are extremely high, but the healthcare system is pretty good and free. Not as good as the American health care but obviously wayyyyyy cheaper.

To keep my spending down I always cooked for myself, got a bike (luckily for free from a family member) and a kontokort (if I remember correctly, it was a transit card so I could use the buses/metros). You gotta make sure you have a ticket when riding the train or metro because there's usually ticket checkers and they'll charge you out the ass. Honestly as fucked up as it sounds it's really easy to steal bikes there... I wouldn't condone it but if you're really hurting for cash it's a last ditch option.

american politicians typically wear oversized, baggy suits anytime they're being photographed. it's a thing they do to look less like the monied elite and more like your average bumblefuck middle class dad who had to pull out his dusty suit to dress up. it gets so ridiculous sometimes that even the american media makes fun of them for it; i remember back in the last election paul ryan wore a suit that was like six fucking sizes too big for him and all of the newspapers without a conservative bent had something about it

I live downtown in a mid-sized southern city and a lot of the former scene kids/hipsters/general tumblr demographic around two years ago started to dress in the green parka/oversized top/black leggings/doc uniform. But even then, the actually numbers of them paled in comparison to the sorority/southern clones. I would walk around downtown or campus and for every girl you saw tumblrcore, you would see a good 30 or 40 other girls in norts/vineyard vines/lily/ralph lauren type garbage.

Now those same people are now in the "all black" trend but the issue is that they haven't adopted the higher quality pieces like many users of /fa/. They just goto forever21/urbanoutfitters/target, buy the cheapest black things they can find and throw some jordans/timbs or whip their old docs on. It's appealing to me to see more people, especially in the conservative south, adopt this style but I don't think it will have holding power over this area, as these people tend to be the trend-hoppers rather than the ones who've adopted the uniform. See two years ago when they dressed tumblrcore, and previous to that their hipster UO flannel or scene kid looks.

Also I've found that outside of these more creative or psuedocreative subcultures, minorities (blacks/hispanics/asians) are the one's in the south who accept and implement trends.

I've always envied those who live in more diverse areas of the country.

I remember my friend telling me about that new coach of our hometown hockey team. He said that the old one didn't really care about a tem (which is true), he was always coming all fancy dressed on a match day and was all about money, not the "enthusiast" of the game. The NEW guy was always wearing "normal" clothes, drinking beer and cheering for our team during match, the true fan with passion for hockey, not some businessman.

I didn't even know how to comment on that.

Religion is not very big in Denmark. Very few actively practice it and those that do are mostly elderly or part of a pretty strict religious group like Jehovah's Witnesses. Some go to church on special occasions like Christmas eve, but it's mostly out of tradition. Among our generation it's almost non-existent. People do however pay a small church tax (around 1%) to be allowed to be buried in a cemetery, but you can choose not to though.

I'm not a hundred percent sure about immigration, but I think unless you have at least a pretty decent education, it's gonna be tough. People are generally pretty highly educated here. To get a danish citizenship however you are expected to take a test with a whole bunch of random bullshit questions which most Danes can't even pass. It's pretty ridiculous actually but given that Denmark is becoming more and more Americanized and that most Danes are pretty shy and love confident Americans, it might not be so tough for you.

>>8361307
We have pretty inconsistent public transport, at least the trains are. And it's true, you really have to learn to cook for yourself here, because people do not eat out regularly.

>>8361075
Well you haven't seen the suburbs or the club scene then. There's a whole lot of retarded people there. Actually Danes are usually very mindful of others and their private space, so you it's really rare to be talked to in public unless there's a motive behind it. Actually just looking strangers in the eyes or touching them on public transport can make most uncomfortable and flustered. However if you start up a conversation or ask someone for directions, people are extremely helpful. It's expected everyone takes care of themselves, so clerks or shopkeepers generally wont speak to you unless you ask for help or look completely lost. I have never experienced clerks being outright rude, but most people here just like shopping in peace.
