you'll have to sharpen it depending on how nice the steel is and how often you use it and what you cut. you can get a nice sharpening stone pretty cheap. learn to sharpen on a stone, don't get a pull through sharpener.

other than that you just need to keep it clean and dry, you can lube the pivot every once in a while after you need to clean it thoroughly.

get something you like, but won't mind ruining how it looks over time, especially since you'll be learning how to sharpen it.

if you want an old school knife, and want to start cheap you could try "rough rider" knives, case knives are good and cost a bit more.

I mostly carry newer style knives, lately I've been carrying a "kershaw knockout" also look at "buck vantage" do a little research and just don't buy something that's shit.

it depends what aesthetic you like, but a few of my favorites are the buck 55, the case single blade trapper, or a kershaw leek for something more modern looking. victorinox is always a decent choice as well if you think a phillips head driver (or can opener or corkscrew or whatever model you get) would be useful. the victorinox hiker has a little saw that is nice if you're in a real rural area, otherwise the tinker is a good bet

I use the keychain tools all the time too. The pry bar is so helpful.
