I will never buy from this company. The trench is comfy, and though there were no noticeable (yet - many have reported shit going bad after a few wears) flaws with the pair I tried on, it just doesn't look very good. They look fat and goofy.

Maybe if you reeeealy like them, and can get them on discount (you've just missed a whole slew of discounts), but really? For that price there are better made options (for a little more, for a little less, for the same price)

You might still find some dirt on them on reddit' goodyearwelt or even mfa.
That styleforum thread was somewhat informative.
But, even before it was totally deleted, oakstreet was pm'ing members trying to get them to edit their posts and shit.
Dodgy stuff.

>those looked pretty slim in my opinion
not in person.
Imagine a cartoon duck's bill, like donald or daffy. Look at that straight on and that's what the trench boot reminds me of.

Edging close to 500 bucks? And all the issues I've read about? (leather quality little better than wovlerine 1k's lowest grade cxl leather - which is a whole other can of shit you can read about; loose stitching; footbeds that shift after a few wears; a welt that over tightened etc., can't remember it all, but remembered enough to stay away).

>Any recommendations for something not so bulbous like a Wolverine or Red Wing
And that's the problem, isn't it?
Any why oakstreet was so lauded when they first popped up with the trenchd design.

Dayton service boots are 500++ (postage) but that company is also a dead loss. There's a whole fiasco that happened a few years ago that you can read about on SF - summary? The management, and the workers, are totally incompetent. Worst case: one guy that ordered finally got a satisfactory pair (stretching that term) after 17 fucking months.

I was thinking "hey, that was a few years ago, and the company claims that the people fucking up the operation have been kicked out (cept the owner/manager who is by all accounts a retard), so maybe it's time to give them a chance?"

Okay, so some reddit guys set up a group buy. I pass; still to suspicious. That was months ago. It's now over due.

A month or two ago, one ledditor posted his newly arrived (not group buy) dayton service boots - 3/4 months wait. It was riddled with QC issues.

The posts were deleted after a few hours.

The did the guys that run that sub delete? Doubtful, they seem pretty gleeful in exposing this sorta shit (though they did organize a group buy with dayton..)

More like dayton asked that poster to self-delete; give them time to fix problems that shouldnt' have been allowed to leave the factory in the first place.

My verdict:
Avoid Dayton. You will wait 4 months and be disappointed like so many others.

There really aren't a lot of good choices for good, low profile boots that are "cheap".

Cheap? Maybe look at the chippewa service boot? It's not as bulbous as red wing IR's or beckmans.

Going up there's custom whites semi-dress, which you can get with an unstructured toe like vibergs - about the same price as those oak streets depending on what combination you order.

This may be your best bet if you choose the right combination and can stand their high, high arch. Some whites's combinations can be ugly as fuck. I would like some, but I can't handle the high arch. They are chunky monkey's regardless, and better mad than anything I've mentioned so far.

Above that there's viberg's service (which I went with in the end), but that's 700+. Worth it? Nah. Wanted them though.

I am looking at the spanish brand Carmina. They have some shell and calfskin Jump boots that are not bulbous. About 500USD for the calf ones. Better made than those oakstreets undoubtedly.

Non-bulbous, good quality lace up ankle boots are a rarity.

This topic is done to death, and with good reason: It's what people want, but nobody has made a decent "affordable" (red wing heritageprice or less) offering.

Pic is a pair of whites semidress custom to emulate viberg. Wouldnve gone with this but those arches are too high for my feet. Price ranges to high 389 base and this make up was prolly 450. If it's Fire Season then any white's orders are gonna take a while. (8+++ weeks)

If you have to go red wing, and they're breddy good for that price range, then the IR's will look slightly less bulbous than the beckman; it's that captoe that produces a slight slimming effect. If IR, go copper rather than amber.

Ah alright. Solid points, it is brighter white but then again it's matter of personal preference if that's a bad or a good thing. When I'm wearing the boot I don't think "god these are heavy" but after wearing other stuff the contrast is pretty massive. Wedge soles are thick and solid throughout, so if made from normal weight rubber which by itself is heavy as fuck material, they add up to a lot of "extra" weight. >The sole on the IR is cork, so should be solid there and the Trench Boots are waterlocked stacked leather.
sole on the IR is rubber which just happens to have some bits of cork floating around in there to stop it drying up and cracking like ordinary rubber
it's a rubber sole

trench boots only have a stacked leather heel, the sole itself is singular
>Leather is naturally water resistant to a certain degree (after all, it is dead skin). Are you saying that water will seep through the bottoms of the sole?
if it wears through enough yeah, but the problem is leather soles are not good in rain, waterlocked or not, they will never last as long worn consistently in wet conditions compared to a rubber/corkrubber sole

some companies make rubber soles that aren't a good composite, and will dry up and crack after a few years. the ir's don't have that problem
>>8328051
dunno
leather soled beaters for rainy weather is a silly idea unless you want to resole them every 6 months
they only have so many resoles in them

ive seen pics of that but i don't remember it turning out very well

Fuck, now here I am, wanting the exact same pair of Redwings that I wanted 8 months ago. I'm just afraid that they'll look like clown shoes with a slimmer cut jean, which brought me to finding the Vibergs, but the price is out of my range right now, that brought me to the OSB's but now I find they look like a duck bill, shit. So Dayton's are out, and whites are a maybe, but I don't know how much I want to wait two months for a pair of boots that I might not even find comfortable.
Fuck it, maybe I'll just buy another pair of Clarks DB's. That Mali's look pretty nice too.

Here's the deal with blundstones and other australian work boots:
Blundstone was probably the most well known of the type, but then a few years ago they shitted on quality and shifted their factory to china or some shit.
Quality has by all accounts that I have received, dropped dramatically. Asked around and this is what I found out.

I was at a train station and was sitting next to some tradies decked out in their prole gear and casually asked them about their cement caked boots (fuccboi alert), and whether they wore blunnies. Both said fuck no, that shit's crap. I didn't press them for details as they were bigger than me and with my soft hands and RM's I was at a disadvantage.

Was in a bootshop that caters to the manual labour crowd and asked the same thing: nope, not as good as they were. Basically, if those guys that wear the same pair every day and beat them to shit spilling crap and other stuff, guys that actually work in their boots, say they don't last as long as they used to, like 4-6 months as compared to the year or more, then I can believe that. Not as if people shift production to china because it's better quality, it's just cheaper and corners have to be cut to save money.

Perhaps if you're wearing them casually it won't matter so much, and I still see some in the younger crowd that can't yet afford RM's and what not wear them, and not wear them badly, really- especially the grills - they can pull off wearing fuckoff beat up blunnies with a summer dress pretty well. Fuck off beat up RM's look better, yes, but the blundstones were a good enough facsimile for teens and the like.

Long short is don't bother with the company. If you want a pair of australian work boots there are companies left that still have some semblance of quality and aren't made in china.

One thing for blundstone is that they have the 059 or 060 last that has a chisel toe. Looks better, but still crap construction. Look at Rossi, Redback, or even Steel Blue.

>> No.8330690

How do you get mud off of boots? I have some dried on from a month or so ago on my Katahdins that is kind of preventing me from conditioning them. It is mainly in between the bottom sole and the upper in a little crack. Tried scraping it off, but results were kinda eh.
