I just felt like saying this since the thread is new:

Quartz beats automatic hands down.

No adjusting time every week due to the inferior accuracy of a mechanical movement.

No 'I didn't wear my watch for two days so now I have to adjust the time again'

No $500+ servicing every year, in fact most quartz watches cost under the service amount of a luxury automatic

>hurr but I don't need a battery

Quartz batteries last upwards of 2 years. A shit casio I got in 2010 had its first battery change this year.

Pic related is a great looking, cheap as fuck accurate quartz FASHION watch.

and the sweeping second hand of an automatic is way sexier than the ticking hand of a quartz watch.

I know this /fa/ and quarz watches are cheaper and more accurate, but some people like to buy a watch and wear it for more than one season.

I paid about 500€ for mine and the service (every 3-5 years) is about 120€. Most people on this board are spending more on some fancy brand socks per month.

Accuracy is not a big deal for me either, since it's only about 2 seconds per day, what equals only 1 minute per month.

I'm not a usual lurker on this board but I have a watch question.
I'm a Frenchfag who wants a French automatic watch, so the choice is very limited. Basically, it comes down to one brand: Y&B. They're not exceptional in any way, but they're French-made and also, cheap. I like that.

Their collection is here: http://www.yonger-bresson.fr/collections

Basically, I want a round one with a metal bracelet and a sweeping second.
I'm tempted by the black Pyrate one because I like the design, but I'm really unsure if it's actually "wearable". I mean, it's quite excentric.
Other choices would be the "La Boissière", the "Fontainebleau", the "Cheverny", all in their metal+black-face version.

Otherwise, maybe one of the XTrem Rondes, despite not having metal bracelet.

Any advice?

So I want to buy a watch for my mother, she likes small watches. What do you guys think of the Seiko Lukia line?

Well, most of the frames recommended in the previous threads were only available from the US, which is not an option for me. The "status symbols" are purely for my own enjoyment, as neither my friends or family give a solitary shit about any of it.

Recent and first ever watch cop. Loving the new piece

>> No.8297693

Agreed. If there is one thing we can all agree on, regardless of tables and floors, its that watches are nice.

I think moving from a Luminor to a Datejust is an excellent move. Luminor has its appeal but it is quite large for everyday wear and a Datejust is far more versatile. Will you be going for a oyster bracelet of a jubilee? Any other watches that seem like promising candidates?

I am very patient when it comes to luxury goods, if I buy something it must be practical or I find it difficult to justify. I've mostly dabbled in vintage pieces but I find they are too much of a liability when it comes to maintenance (with the expection of Rolex's overengineered 15XXX movements of course). Recently I was shopping for an every day watch and within my budget I had the choice of Rolex, JLC, Patek, AP and micro-brands like NOMOS and Sinn.
I didn't want a gold watch since they scratch and dent easily in my opinion so that ruled out Patek, whereas something more toolish like Sinn seemed slightly unrefined to be versatile.
It came down to JLC, Rolex and NOMOS. I would have been completely content with a Master Ultra Thin Jubilee, it is beautiful but I needed something more sturdy for my active lifestyle. I went with a ceramic submariner. Slightly common choice, but it is a watch I seldom have to take off and so I am fairly content with it. I am considering purchasing a dress watch but I have little use for it at the moment. Any recommendations outside the usual suspects?

Well, the seller who has the Datejust also has V-series (the last one) 16600 Sea-Dweller in mint condition, so that is also a strong contender, even though it is more expensive. Oyster bracelet no matter what. I am not a fan of the jubilee, unless you are retired or a gangster.

Don't ever get an Audemars Piguet. They completely fucked me on my purchase, and the support is horrible. I have a Royal Oak Offshore with the rubber strap and rubber bezel, and they get scratched to shit so easily. So I went to my AD and tried to purchase a steel bezel and a leather strap. I was told that AP does not sell parts that weren't intended for the watch, even though they fit perfectly. I was given the option to order a new set of rubber parts, but they wanted fucking 3 thousand dollars for them. I am never buying anything from them again. The service prices are also through the roof. I may have money, but I am not an idiot.

For everyday watches, I tend to stick to Rolex. I have a 1989 GMT-II with the black and red bezel. I don't really have any other recs for everyday. I am sad to say, but I don't like the new ceramic Rolexes. They lost their subtly with the shiny bezel and the maxi dial.

For dress, I highly recommend you check out Urban Jürgensen. They are not very well known, but their movements, fit and finish is a league above both A. Lange and Patek.

>> No.8297765

>>8297718

That is a difficult choice indeed. If you are intending to sell the watch in the future, I would say go with the SD, considering that their prices will go the same way as 5513 are right now and four line COSC 14060m's will be in a few years from now (in my opinon).
Otherwise it depends on your lifestyle and occupation I think. If you are fond of the outdoors perhaps you will value and enjoy the SD far more than the Datejust. What are you instinctively drawn towards?

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences with AP, I've heard of their ridiculous service prices from a friend who owned a Royal Oak. After it came back from the service, he immediately sold it for a profit and bought a Blancpain FF on my recommendation. Personally the designs of AP never really appealed to me enough to own one. Did you keep the watch or sell it? JLC master compressor might be an interesting alternative to the Offshore range.

I completely understand where you are coming from. Once I had committed to a sub the question was "which one". The 5513 is a classic but frankly I've had my fill of vintage pieces and have sold most of them. So it came down to 114060 and the 14060. Aesthetically the 14060 is the superior but the bracelet was not up to scratch, considering that both the pieces were more or less equally priced. The glidelock clasp helped as well. I don't find the maxi-case and maxi-dial too offensive. Anything in particular you dislike about the ceramic subs? Criticisms encouraged and welcome.

UJ have some lovely pieces, I wish they would make them in a traditional dress watch size (34-38mm). I know thats considered effeminate nowadays but the smaller size gives a wonderful feeling of subtlety and restraint. Apologies if I'm wrong and UJ do make some watches in that size, I did not come across one.

>hey completely fucked me on my purchase,
please elaborate
>So I went to my AD and tried to purchase a steel bezel and a leather strap. I was told that AP does not sell parts that weren't intended for the watch, even though they fit perfectly.
Funny, I thought at those price points, they would be much more accommodating to their esteemed customer.
I assume you did not stomp into the store like a raging asshole and where willing to pay for your "custom style" AP?

I still have my AP. I just don't really ever wear it. I should probably just get it sold so I can be rid of it.

I don't like the JLC master compressors. They are too bulky. I try not to wear anything over 40-42mm. The AP Offshore is just pushing it.

The glidelock clasp is the only thing I like about the new Rolex's. And the new lume. Everything else, I like better with the old models. The dial especially is just way too exaggerated, with the large dots and the thick hands.

Urban Jürgensen does have 37-38mm sizes.

Agreed 40mm is the limit for personally.
Perhaps the difference in opinion regarding the rolex is due to me being tired of vintage quality. Some find the bracelet stretch and rattle to be appealing, and perhaps if I had paid the amount people did in the days when Rolex was a tool watch, I would have agreed. But personally its not for me. Having said that the criticisms of the ceramic bezel being more blingy are very valid too. The lack of date lens does help reduce the stigma, albeit slightly.

The reference 2 looks excellent, and perfect size too. Your father has impeccable taste, I picture him to be a well seasoned horologist. I have a feeling these pieces would be out of my price range, but I will look into trying to see one in the flesh if possible. Thank you for bringing this brand to my attention.

I am not exaggerating when I say that UJ has better finish than Patek and Lange. Their watches are COMPLETELY hand built, and the dials are made by hand. Every singe groove has been hand carved.

I believe their perpetual calenders cost around 90-100 grand (dollars), while their more simple watches are less expensive.

They are only sold in Copenhagen, Chicago and Geneva, but sometimes if you are lucky, they will pop up on chrono24. I highly recommend checking them out if you can.

I did have a look on Chrono24 and other than a minute repeater there wasn't much there. I plan to make a trip to Geneva at least once in the next three years so I may have a look at it then.

Perpetual Calendars have never really appealed to me so I will most likely be looking at the simpler models with minimal complications. I prefer clean dials which is why I would I would pick something like a Caltrava or VC Patrimony over a complicated dial. Not to say I don't appreciate the intricate workmanship that goes into complications.
I believe you when you say that the UJs are better finished. The reference 5 and 8 look exquisite, I cannot wait to see them in person.

>> No.8298016

>>8297933
I cannot speak for the other person but the Grand Seiko can be a polarising watch.

1. When you spend over £1000 on a watch you buy a few things; the watch, the warranty and the exclusivity. Granted the latter is relative however people may be uncomfortable purchasing a watch which that has a name found on £60 mechanicals. I'm not saying that this is a good or bad reason to not purchase it, but it is an understandable reason.
2. GS are usually very well finished and I have seen some very nice workmanship on their dials. But as mentioned previously, the writing on the dial can clash with the rest of the aesthetic. Personally I wish they changed the Seiko logo on their high end pieces (or is that some kind of blasphemy?)
3. The movement has its own merit, but unlikely to sway someone who could get a JLC Reverso in the same price range. If movement is the only criteria there are still better options.

Overall a good option if you are a die-hard seiko fan or want a smart-casual watch. It depends on your taste.
If movement is top-priority, why not pick an in-house NOMOS over a GS?

>>8297881
Vintage Omega dress watches have a simple refinement to them and are extremely charming. The Speedmaster is a classic. Everything after has been hit and miss (mostly miss). Even they know this, which is why they released a vintage inspired seamaster at basel 2014. The only interesting thing they have done lately is make a completely amagnetic watch, but even that has a flashy and tacky design in its current form.

The traditional view on dress watches is two hands, clean dial and no complications. Depending on who you talk to, even a date on the dial could be considered very poor taste. You could say this faux pas is arbitrary but it exists. Depends on how well versed the company one keeps is in etiquette. I was always told there is no such thing as a dress watch because it is considered inappropriate to wear a watch with a tuxedo/at a formal event. My family is old fashioned though, modern tastes are far more liberal when it comes to things such as this.
