It really sucks, I used to grow my hair out continuously all year (trimming sides and styling it differently occasionally but never cutting it down significantly) and then shave it to skinhead level with all my friends at the start of summer. I've had hair past my shoulder blades for about 2 years now and I visit the barber about every 4 to 5 months just to cut my split ends, I only wash my hair twice a week and never brush it. I have nicer hair than 90% of girls I meet, if you can't rock long hair correctly then just shave it off.
