So here's the thing. I'm really interested in a more streetwear aesthetic, but I hate the idea of having a gigantic wardrobe full of pieces that really only work in specific combinations. Is there room for compromise?

Cause it seems to me streetwear is often about having a unique statement piece in something like a jacket or a pair of shoes, with the other pieces playing with simpler elements of the fit, like texture or draping. I don't know though, I'm a scrub.

i think you should be looking for versatility with basics, but an idea of the fit with what's going on top of the whole fit to create the whole image.

that's a common element that i have found with most japanese streetwear, it's just layered basics, with an interesting item on the top, or just one item that's the focal point of the fit standing out. i might be wrong though!!

I'd say the biggest difference is a willingness to co-opt non-street and non-urban styles and garments. American streetwear is pretty set in its garment styles and anything beyond a certain range and people start treating it as something else.

with a lot of the fits you're posting, part of what makes them seem cool is the photography and natural good looks of the models

it wouldn't be that hard to dress at that level yourself, if you've got the money to buy the pieces. just don't expect every look in the mirror to look as good as a professional photo shoot. the most important thing is to wear what you like and try your best not to give a fuck, have some faith in your ability to look natural in whatever you wear. if you don't feel like you're trying and failing to pull off your fit, you won't look like it, either.

the hardest part about transcending being basic is learning to not be so afraid of wearing the wrong thing. everyone has bad fits once in a while, and nobody will be criticizing your fit worse than you (unless you post it online -- people are ultra-critical of fit pictures on the internet. they aren't nearly so critical irl, I'm 90% sure)
