http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/disintegrating-designs

"U.E.G. is an interesting company, and an existentialist statement about the temporal nature of life is nice and all, but how about some durable clothing? Disintegrating designs actually seem to be anti-eco clothing. Instead of a piece that will hold up to the test of time, U.E.G. has created clothing that guarantees a need for replacement. Interesting as an art statement, not so interesting for buyers."

have you ever held or felt tyvek before? its the stuff used in construction when siding something like a garage or shed

its paper thin and somewhat glossy, theres some durability but not much really.

its not exactly a new concept to make items out of tyvek, people make things like wallets and bowls out of it all the time. but with clothing its definitely has a more futuristic vibe to it, i personally don't believe a tyvek windbreaker is worth $170~ since it would begin to wear out quite fast, but UEG is one of the only companies if not the only one making that sort of stuff.

Both of you are off. Leaving aside pinning down an exact definition of something like "techwear," it's fairly obvious that whatever we're talking about involves functionality, garments as tools. And, usually, functionality in the modern urban jungle, which does not have ticks except in woodsy parks.

Capris found their way into the mix because of bike chains.

1) "Techwear" and "waterproof" aren't the same thing. God, I hate that sort of thinking. Leaving aside that it's not always raining, or something like the fact that *Outlier* has not once in its history produced a waterproof garment, I hate the way it reduces technicality down to toughness, and toughness to the garment and not the person - the way it assumes everything, all function that's important, is about comfort and personal climate control. You see it in a lot of stuff around techwear, but especially in the obsession with hardshells.

Hardshells are great for low exertion activity, but a softshell is going to be better for most high exertion activity and it's all you really need in a city, hopping between buildings and transit. You'll probably be at least as physically comfortable in a softshell.

What hardshells *do* give you is this feeling of invulnerability, feeling like you're as impenetrable as the membrane, like nothing can touch you, because it can't, unlike those saps clutching umbrellas. And do you really want that? Do you really want to be out of touch with the world, with sensations that are available to you, with the ability of the world to stimulate you and make you feel alive?

It reminds me of that little bit of The Applicant, the Plath poem quoted towards the end of The Flamethrowers:

"How about this suit----

Black and stiff, but not a bad fit.
Will you marry it?
It is waterproof, shatterproof, proof
Against fire and bombs through the roof.
Believe me, they'll bury you in it."

"Proofness" isn't the ultimate point, or shouldn't be. Experience is. Achievment, maybe, is. If there's a monolithic definition of techwear I can live with, it's "clothing congruent with its wearer's conatus." Or something like that. It'll be different in different contexts, which is fine. Any breathable runner will get waterlogged in the rain, by puddles if nothing else. Any fully waterproof shoe will get sweaty in the high summer. C'est la vie.

2)
>not wind resistant

Most of the time, this is a plus. You want air circulating inside your shoes. Helps keep them dry. It's certainly a plus for runners and in the summer.

3)
>ankle support
a. Lol you want that?
b. They do, dammit.

4) From what I can tell from being an obsessive fanboy, Errolson Hugh wears Flyknits more than anything.

5) Flyknits are easily the most innovative, best, just-plain-awesome shoe construction in ages. I hate Nike only for, when they finally get around to producing a "Hyperfeel" Flyknit, sticking it with a *drop* thicker than the soles on the shoes I'm wearing now.

6) Roshes are generally shit, although some people can pull off some colorways. Something about the material almost always looks cheap IRL, and the sole is just a bad idea, something about being inspired by some stones some Buddhist monks walk on.

This. A lot of people in these threads don't seem to get that "waterproof" has been a solved problem since before Goretex was introduced. You can buy a totally waterproof garment for a few bucks at a gas station. It's the "breathable" side of things that's a much harder problem, and leads down some odd paths like cotton shells.

And then there's tons of interesting tech that has nothing to do with water.

Here's a tip for when you want an urban backpack. If there's nothing going across the chest, it's shit. If you expect to be running you need something to secure it, single strapped or a chest buckle will do. Another thing is carrying handles attached to the main straps like on the Dakine Mission are bad for your back. You need to be able to pull the bag up on your back as far as possible for it to be optimal. It's better to have weight higher on your back than lower.

So yeah. Those kids you see with thier book bags slung low and bouncing on their asses are going to have lower back problems for life in about 5 years because they have no idea what they're doing is putting undue stress on their spine.

Fuck, my commuters are my favorite pants ever. The material isn't particularly stretchy and they are pretty heavy but goddamn they are functional and look sick.
This is my favorite part though, the cargo pockets are a pocket in themselves, and it has this rubber stuff that makes sure NOTHING will ever slip out.

>>8184510
Yea I really like that about them too, I always stuff my phone in that pocket. They're great to bike in too, I can fit an entire u-lock in one of those pockets.

>>8184449
Yea, they have collabs with a number of other brands too like si:sp, and firmament-berlin. the 3rd arm bags are a bit of a special breed though - a lot of the features they have, like the webbing mounted auxiliary pockets and compartment design isn't shared with other bagjack models. That is, in contrast to many of their other collabs that are simply different colour-ways or materials.

I use mine exclusively for my phone, easy access. They really are the best pants for getting around, even the pockets on the ass have a slight flap overlayed to stop shit falling out. Seriously impressed with them. I don't even mind that they're not that tapered.

>>8184584
Yeah, I've been looking into getting a 3rd arm, but I'm not sure what one. (I'd just cop a thrashed one from ACR sales thread). I have an 18L Visvim E-Cat which I love, but I'd really like to upgrade. Do you know of one that's a similar size?

054 gets it. In traditional layering, your midlayer is *not* supposed to provide moisture protection. Your top layer, generally, is *not* supposed to provide warmth. They *can*, but that's not the point.

Softshells are different. It's a broad, catch-all term now for anything that protects you from rain but isn't fully waterproof, but it got started when Patagonia had to come up with a term to market a watered-down version of Buffalo windshirts, which are designed to work with your body's climate regulation and replace your base, mid, and top layer with a single garment. The Patagonia ones, direct ancestors of that Adze and most other softshells, are just supposed to replace the top two, providing a balance of warmth and weather resistance that's better than traditional layering. You're not supposed to wear them with a hardshell, or really as a standalone in dry weather. A standard fleece, or a wool sweater, or something would be better for insulation. People don't because they're stupid, and somewhere along the way the idea got out that softshells were somehow more sophisticated or fashion-y than fleeces, like dark vs light wash jeans, so REI sells them by the buttload to people who don't know better.

http://www.andy-kirkpatrick.com/articles/view/the_best_softshell_in_the_world

Some history and a good overview here.

Generally, a softshell will be more versatile and useful than a hardshell, not because they provide warmth, but because they breathe better.

They're also harder to choose appropriately, because hardshells are all pretty similar, but softshells run the gamut from light windbreakers with no real insulation value to fully insulated jackets, from stuff that's barely there to stuff that's n a hearly a hardshell. How are you going to be using it? In what weather conditions?

wow, thank you very much for your feedback, it's very detail and with loads of information, really appreciate that, i don't expect anything this detail in /fa/.
I am going to stay a year in germany, i presume the weather there is cold yet very wet, that's why i am start searching for a good looking hardshell which i thought it would be enough for winter cuz it's with goretex (sorry for being one of the stupid people, i know nothing about tech wear). And i also reckon i might ride bicycle in a rainy or snowy condition, and so i want to buy a warm water proof weather which is perfect for doing sport in european winter
