I don't use shampoo because, like you said, it always makes my beard feel really wirey.

I used to condition it every other day or so, but then it would curl out a bit more and be somewhat harder to control. I use a bit of tea tree oil on it after a shower while it's still a bit damp, not wet but damp. And brush it, too, although I've started blow-drying it to try and shape it a bit more

I have the same problem and I can't grow a beard because of it. I was using rogaine on one of my cheeks for 3 or 4 months. It helped a little, but I lost all my gains after a month. Left pic is one week growth right after stopping rogaine applications, right pic is 9 days growth month after stopping. The beard is quite light. I try to keep it as natural as possible, I truly hate shaving. Do trim from time to time, the mustache gets in the way.
