I think this is a pretty fair criticism, but it's also hard to deny that the look is still pretty relevant and that people do really care what Hedi has to say about dressing. While he was gone, you saw plenty of contemporary labels like Sandro and The Kooples pop up and do really well, so obviously that look, that severity, that inspiration still resonates with a lot of buyers and customers.

It just feels so trivial compared to the attention it gets. I mean, there's nothing wrong with a great leather jacket etc., but it just rubs me the wrong way if a designer basically designs wardrobes for rockstars inspired by rockstars from previous decades. I guess you could say the same about Number (N)ine to some extent, but Miyashita made it feel authentic and always gave it some interesting spin, while Hedi's recent collections are just too literal for my taste.

Here's a particularly interesting chap: Carol Christian Poell, an Austrian designer based in Italy. He has a familial background in clothing construction: in fact, it is reputed that he had the skills of a master tailor by his teens
His work is often labeled "transgressive", but I think it's progressive as much as anything: his clothing has been a vehicle for consideration of feminist ideologies, existentialism & decay, among other things.
His clothing is immaculately constructed, and he's noted for his use of unorthodox treatments and finishes - object dying, where the item itself is dyed after completion rather than the hide being dyed and progressing from there, dipping items in latex, plastic & other chemical treatments in order to give a scarification look, etc
He's quite experimental and often voices his disdain for the typical "luxury" fashion industry, and no longer produces bi-annual collections
As he says
>It has become superficial and is mostly about self-celebration, styling and making money

He is a true individual, and in my opinion, a true genius, though I'd never wear any of this things, I have the utmost respect for him

I uploaded this video of SS04 today in fact, if anyone is interested!

Trying to cram voguepedia so u can impress ur tumblr peepz with dat fashunz trivia or in an attempt to feel superior to plebs even though you haven't even looked into the designers work or even care about it for that matter isn't cool.

Dries is pretty much the most consistent designer working right now. Which is amazing, because he's not just doing the same thing every season.
