Is it worth paying ~$500 for single pieces of clothing?

I just can't see how it is justified, unless you are in the fashion industry who is going to recognise the difference between a $100 and a $500 jacket?

You are, because you're the one who has to wear it.

>> No.7949953

>>7949885

That isn't answering anything.

Its justified because you will know how much it costs? The difference between some pairs of jeans is almost impossible to tell in a fit, yet they can range from $50 to $250.

>>7949953

Well, if you're the one buying it, I would hope that you're the one looking for details. Taking your example of a pair of jeans, I would think that if you're spending your own hard-earned money, you would take the time to inspect the weight of the fabric, the staple of fiber used, the quality of notions, the stitching, the washing (if any), the fit, and so on.

I'm not telling you that you have to spend $50 or $250 or $1000 on jeans. I'm just saying that it's your money and you can spend it as you like, but no matter how you spend it, you should be conscious of what you're paying and what you're getting.

Does a suit count as a single piece of clothing?

A well fitting suit will repay your investment in the doors that open to you. I've noticed that with one of my suits I've never have to wait in line because I'm told to "step this way sir" as checkouts are opened for me.

I wouldn't pay an extra $300 just because a pair of jeans were slightly lighter or had better stitching, Are all your articles of clothing going into the $100's? Do you buy these expensive articles and wear them selectively or do you go out everyday in a ~$1000 total outfit?

You have to replace clothes and I assume everybody has multiple outfits that they wear.

To continue; how frequently do you wear the same clothes? Is it taboo to wear the same outfit 3 days out of the week, then a different outfit the remaining 4, then return to the first?

>I wouldn't pay an extra $300 just because a pair of jeans were slightly lighter or had better stitching

But those aren't the only differences that can exist in jeans. I think you're deliberately narrowing your view and not really realizing the huge variety of clothing out there.

As far as what I wear, that should have no impact on how you tailor your wardrobe to your budget and your lifestyle.

And of course you have to replace clothes and you have to wear different things, but letting transience stop your from buying things of quality or things that you enjoy is a shortcut to not being able to enjoy or connect with something that can be fun, if you let it.

I wear whatever I want, whenever I want. Sometimes, the weather or my mood will make me tend towards certain things or maybe I'll have a new jacket or something that I want to break it. Do whatever makes you feel like the best version of yourself.

To answer your question directly it IS worth paying $500 for a piece of clothing if you think you'll prefer the aesthetic/it'll be more pragmatic

its not like the cheapest walmart clothes are the most practical - you could use sackcloth

so yeah to summarise my views: you can spend little or lots on clothes and they'll be shit/overpriced/not pragmatic - you might feel better in the nicer stuff or feel better with the money

if you don't think its worth it, it isn't worth you buying it

the main reason to buy clothes in higher price ranges is for your own sake. if you just want girls to think you look put together or whatever you can do that at an h&m or what the fuck ever

clothing in that range is meant to make you feel good, make you look uniquely good, and pull together good outfits. and especially on items like shoes or jeans or jackets that you can wear seven days a week if you want, there's a clear benefit to investing in quality. and if you're paying that much for a button up or something you can be damn sure it'll be the nicest button up in any room you walk into and people will admire you for it

>> No.7950161

if it's worth it to you, yes. measure your cops in how happy they make you. and if its a good quality piece, you can calculate that you get to wear a sick pieces and only pay $1 per wear for 500 days.

I am economics student.

You would think I believe buying frivolous shit such as expensive clothes is bullshit.
No.
I love it.

In microeconomics you are taught relative value (marginal cost) and actual cost.

You can say you value a nice jacket at $500, but then you find one for $350. That jacket to you is still worth $500, so you make an imaginary profit (marginal benefit) of $150.

So if it's worth it to you, it's worth it.

I value clothes because they make me feel nice. I value that highly. So I make huge marginal benefit.

If you have a problem paying that much, then you need a cheaper interest.

Let's say you race cars as a hobby. You can't see how anyone justifies paying $700 for an engine swap. Who's gonna recognize the difference between a stock 4cyl 1.8L 5-speed manual engine and a 4A-GE engine that only the corollas in Japan got? A gearhead would tell you you're in the wrong hobby.

Even plebs notice. They don't know how much my stuff costs and they couldn't tell you what exactly is different but they remark on how nice it always looks and ask where I buy from. To most people it just looks a little better and fits better.

If you don't want to buy it, don't buy it, if you can afford it, don't buy it, designer clothing is more about knowing you like it, and that it's high quality. Joe six pack won't be able to tell the difference between Rouge Territory and Levi, but you can.

If you're dressing for other people, if you're dressing to appease the most people you can, I can promise you /fa/ isn't for you, go to mfa. It's for people like you.
