I'm curious about the people who became fashionable thanks to /fa/. What was your journey like? How did you develop your style? Did you start out by purchasing basics or did you get in shape so clothes would look better on you? What mistakes did you make and what would you tell others trying to get /fa/?

Last year I was wearing whatever I had in my years-old wardrobe (mostly baggy shirts and shoddy jeans) and as a result had zero self confidence in my appearance, with bad posture to match. With the growing prospect of university - and with it the nightmare possibility of interviews - I knew I had to change.

The past year has been fantastic and I now believe for all the self-help confidence guide available, there is nothing like clothes that fit and feel great, and ultimately look great, to boost self-esteem. Thanks to /fa/ guides I went into my interviews feeling confident in my appearance, have updated my wardrobe to exactly what I wanted, and genuinely feel great! Its a fantastic community and whether it was directly or indirectly I just want to thank all those that helped along the way.

started hanging out here for random advice, branched out to other forums, i was a well known member on styleforum before the format change where i left the forum, same with sufu back then

bought random things at nordstrom in riverside (pack of under shirts, burberry london back when it was still burberry london sweaters and polo rl) then started copping other brands discussed here, bought levis stf as entry level jean for the competition we held here.

then got into designers
i lived in japan for a bit where i wore alot of number (n)ine and uniqlo collabs.....researched brands for years

i remember sitting there looking up brands alexa chung was talking about on "its on with alexa chng" and writting down names, i bought a blumarine sweater becuase paris hilton mentioned the brand, took a look at it and liked the soft hand. reading gq cover to cover a few times a month...back when they were discussing alot of thom browne and alden
starting in about 2011 they started going down market which alienated me.

then bought stupid shit like lanvin suiting in college

i still dress like shit
i have a lot of little regrets

>> No.7939229

Used to wear primarily skate brands. eS was my favourite brand. I was also really into Cam'ron too, so I had a Dipset t shirt I wore down until it was all holes

Now wear stuff like EG, Dries, Margiela, and a lot of vintage stuff too

i bought some fred perry clothing and tought it was designer, i then started browsing /fa/ and posted a fit in said attire and got bashed, i then lurked for like a year and my style and fashion related knowledge really developed (thank you based SZ), my wardrobe now consists of some really nice basics and a few designer pieces i really liked and decided to cop, i recently discovered that there is a store that stock rick, margiela and barret, quiteclose to my appertment, went there with my girlfriend a few days ago and had a really nice conversation about rick with the lady that owns the place, she was wearing margiela and lanvin, i even left them my phone noumber so they can call me whn they get some new pieces.. anyway /fa/ has transformed my life completley and i am forever gratefull

But have that jacket at the end tailer you look like some evil emperor with those pointy shoulder tips.
Also god those shoes, you look way too old for them it's almost cringe worthy.

I see what you're saying but I didn't know what kind of style/clothing I liked until I actually copped + had the garments firsthand and I wore them and checked to see how they would look on my body.

>>7939764
not kidding at all - like I didn't know if I didn't like it until I got the garment and wore it for a fit pic, and decided it wasn't for me. every garment in my "after picture" which was not even a month ago I literally don't own anymore because I sold them

>> No.7939791

Started with a very basic knowledge of clothes (i.e. skinny jeans look better than baggy dadcore ones, shorts should be fairly short) and style that i pretty much copied from midwest bands that i liked
now i have a bunch of slim denim, a dozen pairs of shoes, a ton of different shirts and outerwear and i dress at least marginally better.
i really like japanese streetstyle and i attempt to dress in a way that isn't immediately noticable but looks at least fairly well dressed to the average person
it kinda bothers me that i do spend a lot of time thinking about clothes and fit and all that and i've purposelly worked towards a fairly subtle style. my friend wears an oversized cardigan, a shirt tucked into his hot topic blue jeans and docs and people think he's dressed so well
oh well, that's life

I kinda get what you're saying. I bought a couple pieces in the beginning that ended up not suiting me like I had hoped. Still do sometimes, but now it's usually a matter of sizing since I generally have to buy online.

OT, my story isn't really exciting
Was into baggy shit and band shirts through highschool, started getting out of it towards the end. Bought some cheap dadcore shit just to get away from it for a while, but I still had no idea what I was doing. Then like 2 years after I graduated I finally started coming here. Got into gothninja for a little while. Copped some overlong tees, a semi-sheer oversized sweater, some VtB shit that hardly gets worn anymore, other than a dark gray l/s, and a pair of hightops. Stopped being so into goof a little after that, more into minimal greyscale stuff.
Then I bought my Undercover layered jeans and they're all I ever want to wear now. Experiment with other stuff now and then, though.

that kind of happens to everyone. I copped a bunch of really shitty clothes or clothes that didn't fit my style when I started out. It took me a while to stop copping badly fitted or shitty clothing and make it into my own style.
