Hey /fa/, I have an uni interview in chelsea for graphic design on thursday. What would be appropriate to wear?

I was thinking blue or white ocbd/dark grey jeans/boots/Carhartt camo jacket.

I'll bump with general inspo.

I had 4 interviews last week for graphic design, good luck bro it's nothing to be worried about if you are, it's literally just a conversation about your work and who inspires you, shit like that

Anyways I wore my raws, a White Mountaineering sweater with a shirt underneath and a pair of Danner boots. Then I also wore a Black Flag t shirt to one too and it turns out that my interviewer was a big Black Flag fan lol. Point is is that I don't think it matters too much, you can go as casual as I did but the general rule of thumb is to not dress as dressy as your interviewer, so I think you should be fine with what you had planned out.

dressing 'cool' for a creative interview is like showing up to a wine tasting drunk

just wear basic shit, they'll respect you more if you're tasteful

Cheers man, I'm really excited (and nervous) cus I didn't even have the entry requirements to get into any of my courses, let alone an offer and three interviews lined up.. I've been told I have a really professional portfolio which is probably the reason I got in - I'm just scared that my grades won't take me further than the interview. Hopefully I can wing it, I've spend all day today organizing my print portfolio. When I told my friends I was just going to wear casual clothing they laughed.. I assume it's because they're all going to fairly top-tier math/physics/engineering Unis.

I'm crap with talking to people I've never met before, or talking in front of groups. I know for a fact I'll forget my favourite designers names, or the reasons I should be listing for wanting to go..

Lol I applied for UCLAN which is a pretty prestigious uni for graphic design, came up unprepared (didn't have a lot of my stuff printed so I put it on a tablet), stuttered to fuck, lots of awkward silences but I got an offer there and then on the spot. I was pretty surprised but as long as you're fairly knowledgable of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc, the industry, and they see potential in you then you should get in no problem. Also be friendly as the course involves quite a lot of communication with fellow classmates etc. What are the entry requirements for the uni?

Grats man, Art foundation year OR high A Level grades.. I have neither. I've been told by my current teachers that they're willing to put money on me getting an unconditional from Norwich, but I would love to live in London, regardless of living poor/cheap lifestyle. I've used Photoshop, illustrator for the past 6+ years, last 3 more seriously. I was set on motion graphics for a long time but realised graphic design would open more doors (as I could include motion in my projects). I can make friends pretty easily, and I open up once I get to know them but it's the initial talking which I'm crap at.

On that note, I've got an interview at Manchester on Thursday for Chemistry.

For my York interview I just wore black chinos, monochrome black converse (pleb AF I know) and a tasteful blue checked shirt. Would post pics but cba.

Most of the other people either went all out and did shirt + tie business, others wore jeans and trainers (STEMbabbies are often clueless to this shit)

They say "it's informal, we're to judge your passion for chemistry, not your dress sense!" but I still can't help but get a bit tense about what to wear.

Good luck to everyone with your interviews

Thats the only thing that's tempting me. Also I have a friend who I met through tumblr, and then met in person at a festival who seems to be living my dream life over in norwich. Sick studio apartment, vinyls, bikes, art, plays shows and so on.. UEA seems chill, I'm an introvert so to speak and love spending time by myself. I walk/skate about by myself quite a lot so as long as I'm out of this shithole I call home I don't really mind where I end up. Norwich just looks chill as fuck, plus so much cheaper than london.

But london is london, so it wins by default.

i mean yeah it's not bad, uea has dope brutalist architecture, there's a few record shops, nice pubs and bars, there's one good club (hideout) and multiple crappier ones, but... Yeah, London. Although comparing halls, my gf (in London) pays twice as much as I paid for rent in pic related - £160/week compared to £80, albeit in a nicer building.

Mind you, I pay £300/month for a double room in a house now, which seems to be on the upper end of the scale here, although we have to cover bills too.

I think I have a mate who goes to Chelsea, and he seemed to be having a great time. I;d ask him about the interview but he deleted his facebook and i don't have his number anymore.

yeah, the thing is my parents said they'd actually buy me an apartment in Norwich, as opposed to forking out money for me to live somewhere else cus they paid an arm and a leg for my brothers private education, where as they never spent a penny on my education.. then they can flip the apartment and make a profit on the other end (if i decide to move). But london I'll be on on own in some crackhouse 1hr from Chelsea.. but still.. london..

It's all a bit complicated, I'll need to work out what I'll be doing after I'm kicked out of halls IF i actually go to chelsea.

I had Nigel

They brought us into a room with our portfolios, We then left them for the interviewers to assess and if they were good enough they gave a time to come back and have the interview later that day.

We shook hands and discussed my portfolio after he'd looked at it privately, he'd always accompany any praise with something negative. Most of what he said was neutral. Mostly standard interview questions favourite designers, why chelsea etc. Some 'odd' questions. They are big on ideas and experimental graphics

it's graphic communication more than graphic design.

Really really nice college and environment

I really appreciate this.

"Us" - Please say there's no group interviews? With your portfolio what did you take? I currently have my A2 Unit 3 folder, a portfolio of selected works (mostly my favourite) with breakdowns and talking briefly about each bit. Some sketches and some drawings, and some larger paintings (2).

What sort of "odd" questions? Similar to "How many windows in london?" or "Does Plurék or Burrshk sound like a better work?"

I have a very broad skill set, from illustration to 3D motion (and I'd say im pretty good at it all too, if i'm going to blow my own trumpet..)
