Towel drying is a bit too agressive (if you mean rubbing a towel with more or less energy on your hair), but blow drying is only really bad if you do it for too long, from too small a distance to your hair and if the air is pretty hot.

You could comb your hair the way you want it to be, when it's still wet, let air dry just enough so that it becomes damp but not really wet anymore, apply the product, and then you'll only have to blow dry for a fraction of the time you normally would. At least I'd think so.

Just so you know most products aren't great for your hair either, or so I'm told.
