Hello there

I don't have much clues about boots (or shoes and fashion in general for that matter), and I want a pair (gotta be a first time).
I'm looking for something solid, that will last for some time, resist rain and relative cold (but aiming at something I'd wear pretty often, even in summer), that will hold my feet good (allowing me to jump or run without trouble).
As for the looks, all black prefered, bron or grey are good too. I don't want to put a cent in some fancy decoration or having a big logo or other shit, just good quality shoe. I don't like when there is like one inch of sole around the shoe, especially in a different color, but as I said I don't care that much about the looks, just something classic and not shinycrap.
For the price, I'm not too limited, but still poorfag student, so converting it in $, I'd hardly go further than 130-150$ I think (70-100€ prefered if there is such a thing)
Currently going through the sticky's advices, but advices/examples of brands are very welcome.

Here's the ones I more or less like ITT:

quality, comfort and looks in one package. now unfortunately, you would hardly find them under $200. but buy it once, and you won't want to buy another pair. the crepe sole is softer underfoot than the iron rangers and more comfortable if you are walking more than a few hours at a time.

i usually wear a UK 7-7.5. these are my chucks, which have about 1cm wiggle room in the toe.

i went a full size down, and i have room for a thick sock in these. with RWs, i believe it depends on which shoe you go for, but for these i'd recommend a full size down. you may want them to be a LITTLE snug, as the leather tends to adjust to your foot. or if you're like me and want them for the colder weather, allow enough room for delicious thick woolly socks.

i reckon the moc toe thorogoods are much nicer than the plain toes, especially for canadian weather.

when pay day rolls around next week, i'm gonna buy footwear of some description. at this point i'm getting boots, and i'm tossing up between the dayton service boot, clarks desert mali, and the katahdins. only reason i'm not just going with the daytons is because it'll be most of my spare money gone instantly. thanks for the advice though, i'll keep that in mind. how well does the leather wear in?

>> No.7842511

>>7842488
Honestly there was some heel slippage for the first week, and I kept getting blisters because I didn't wear the right socks. But you're an Aussie, and you have Mongrel socks there, so you lucked out. Get their full wool socks, they stay cool in hot weather and vice-versa.

After the break-in, they get immensely more comfortable. Like seriously, god damn. If you don't like the colour of the rim where the upper is welted to the sole (it's orange), don't worry, it changes to dark brown with age. You'll love them. Use Obenauf's or some other heavy duty shit on them, no creams or oils, that's a waste. Glad I could help you, bud

And the moc toes are great, it's just a love-hate thing going on for me. I wore skinny jeans today and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror- fucking clown feet.

>> No.7842591

>>7842511
it does kind of bother me how dependent the fit of a boot can be on socks. it's a hassle finding what works and what doesn't since you have to wear in boots for so long, and then they only feel just right with a certain thickness of sock.

the orange doesn't actually bother me. it's not as loud as the orange rim on chippewas, which would probably bother me. but i do love a boot that ages well. which reminds me to ask how long you've had your thorogoods. apparently they don't age too well.

as bulky as my new RWs are, having tiny feet has eliminated any chance of looking clown-footed. one of the many advantages of having disproportionately small feet. i can't wear skinnies either with my squat legs.

>> No.7842611

>>7842591
My thorogoods actually haven't seen a whole lot of use. Had them for a half year and I really only wear them when it rains or snows because they're amazing for that. They looked a lot better before I treated them. I kind of regret ever oiling them; the leather is soft as shit already and they no longer have a "shine."

I get strong clown feet sometimes because I like wearing tapered pants and I size up with my shoes instead of going E width, just in case the toe box looks weird. They also stretch on the sides a bit, considering starting to buy them wider but I'd have to find out in person whether they look worse.

I copped a pair of the non-cxl version a few weeks ago, made a thread about it here.

Overall, preddy good, though I copped the wrong size dammit. Dunno if I'm going to bother getting the cxl version/another pair.

They are nice boots, and I think the version with the better, cxl leather would be really good but there are some construction issues =.

They're not quality control issues, just a question of materials used.

They're a blake rapid construction, and, apparently, this means that the insole and midsole quality on such footwear matters a whole lot more than it does with say, GY welt etc.

Peeling back the footbed, the insole seems to consist of 2 layers of stacked foam insert. I don't know if the real leather insole is under that or if that is it.

I could have sworn that I read somewhere on reddit or wherever that someone had emailed the company about their insoles and that they had confirmed that they used real leather insoles and not just the foam. I can't find this correspondence anymore, and perhaps it had to do with another company.

Whatever. They're good boots, and have that alden/viberg captoe look without the price tag and are pretty good with qc and are very comfy (the little ankle pullloop is fucking useless tho).

If you can get them cheap, they'd be a servicable boot, but if you're looking for something with some longevity to it, and you're on a budget, then give them a pass as I think those are iffy.

I got them retail in asia on impulse; should've just ordered them from singapore hmuse to get my right size but whatever.

Anyone in Oz looking for a pair of 7UK/8US/41 sized ones I've got a pair. Some RW IR's in a 7.5 US that are too small for me too (fucking me and getting one size too small all the time all because of impatience - ffs)

It's okay if they're your "first boots" but what I was trying to put forth in my post is that they shouldn't be your last.

Like, if you'd bought a pair of viberg/dayton service boots or alden captoes, whites, nicks, red wangs or rmw's. They're all 20(+) year boots, if proper care is exercised of course.

These boots don't give me that impression; they didn't before I took a peek at what was under the footbed and they certainly don't after that.

Perhaps I'm just over stressing it, and maybe there really is a proper insole/midsole in there (though for the price one would doubt it, heck even the wolverine 1000 mile doesn't have a real leather insole - fuckers cheaped out on that part).

They feel like sneakers than other boots I've owned and tried, and that's because of the cushioning, so if you're a sneakeronlyfag then these should be a good intro to boots and your pampered footsies won't get pounded by the rock hard (at first) leather insole of the more traditional makers.

Concering price: IIRC to get them shipped is expensive, particularly if you go through the manufacturer. IMO they are not worth 300USD if that's what you've gotta pay for them all up. If you can get for 240USD or less then they're a good deal. Anything above that and there are better made options with more tried and true reputations and construction, if not aesthetics.

300+ and you'd prolly be best off saving for better boots. 300USD is my cut-off, at least; your money though so do whatever.

>> No.7847077

>>7847035
oh,

>2-3 times a week
get a pair of shoe trees; don't wear them every day. They need to dry (your foot sweat). Doing so will significantly increase their longevity. This is pretty much a non-optional accessory IMO. Also, if your buying option doesn't have the vibram/rubber sole protector then get one put on.

Leather soles won't last as long before a potentially costly resole (and if these blake/rapids don't have the proper insole/midsole then they've really only got a limited number of resoles in them anyway - a topy will help to mitigate this)

Can't say how long they'll last with you, for all I know you may have really rank, acidic foot sweat that melts shoes and sends people running away bleeding from the orifices every time you take your shoes off. Or you may walk in a really fucked manner that wears a particular part of the sole more than any other part. They should last a couple of years at the very least if you tree and topy them.

>>7844986
I once ranted on why I don't like to give this generalised sizing info, but I can tell you what other shoes I can fit into:

42 CP's
8D RW IR's
8D Wolve 1k
8F Loake Captial/Mayfair/026 lasts
7.5-8G RMW craftsman last

A 42 size in chevalier's ankleboot last fits me. Unfortunately the store I tried them on in only had a 42 in the non-captoe variety that didn't interest me, so I got the 41 captoe which is slightly too short for my (larger) right foot. A 43 was too big.

If your cp size is 42 then you'll probably fit in these fine. Probably. (dont' take my word for it though)
