at what age did you start caring about how you dress?

>uniform in school, barely went out of my house during my free time

worst part is i don't have any money so it's still horrible

Since I was about 10, sourcing from a deep-rooted desire to fit in and be accepted. I quickly realized that it felt like only I knew what I was doing and everyone else was just plebby and wasn't cognizant about themselves with the things they wore and how outfits were put together.

>> No.7766786

I always got compliments on my shirts in high school (usually some kind of patterned casual button down, totally pleb stuff looking back) but I wasn't consciously trying to dress a certain way, I guess just had an eye for shirts and I was always fairly good at matching colors. When I got into college I really started to care about putting together a cohesive outfit and pay more attention to cuts, fits, and palettes. A couple years into college I became a little more conscious of differing styles and how to mix them and such.

About 20/21

I had always been uncomfortable with my clothes all through highschool and would try different shit every year. I was also a fatass, so that didn't help.

Then I went to a university with my gf. That's when I first started losing weight and caring more about the way I dressed (albeit, it was horrible UO-core)

Last summer I got fed up with breaking diets and I lost a ton of weight. About the same time I started browsing /fa/ because I needed new clothes. I'm at 180 now. 10 more lbs. to go until I reach my target weight. Now I'm just slowly trying to piece together a wardrobe.

That's no better than what you were doing before. You blended into the crowd then and you blend in now, you're just a smudge in a sea of people.

For clothes to actually make you stand out you have to go drastic to the high end stuff. Some luxury stuff has a "stand-out" factor. Especially Rick Owers, though sometimes you might stand out in a BAD way with that stuff.

bout halfway through 20. Had occasionally been told things like 'whens the last time you tucked your shirt in, didn't stand to close to the razor' eventually found myself in new york and saw that people can look amazing with the right clothes. There was a girl near Washington Sq. that seriously looked like she was in a commercial and a guy dressed very well that was beaming with self confidence, so when i got back home i started with shoes (black slip ons, from there somewhat baggy dadcore stuff) eventually slimmed it down from excessively baggy jeans , big button ups over even bigger t shirts.

>> No.7769133

It's hard to say when I started "caring." I guess I started caring a long time ago, but "caring" doesn't mean dressing well. It just means "thinking about dressing well," or "thinking you're dressing well when you're not."

In junior high, I was the first kid to wear a cardigan and button-up shirts when everyone else was wearing graphic tees and hoodies. Of course, what I was wearing was unremarkable, but compared to middle-schoolers, I was ahead of the game. I was also the first to start shaving that not-quite-a-mustache-lip-fuzz that middle-school boys get. Girls liked that. Every other boy had gross fuzzy faces.

It wasn't until this year that I've stared paying more attention to how I dress. I'm still not amazingly-dressed yet, and I'm still finding my style. Often, I'm either boring and generic, or wearing something so silly and ostentatious that I feel embarrassed at the end of the day. But I'm in the learning stages and understanding more about my tastes every day. I hope to feel satisfied with the way I dress by this time next year.

I started caring at 12 or 13, once I realized I was kinda fat and lost all of it during summer. I started skateboarding for the excersize and inherited whatever clothes my skateboarding brother didn't use anymore.

>lost 60 pounds in two months
People from school didn't recognize me next year. Felt good because a qt3.14 black haired emo-ish girl started being all flirty around me.
>went for some blonde whore instead
Can't regret this more

>kept losing weight because I was out skateboarding instead of playing runescape/tibia
School nurse told my parents to get me into some kinda diet to make sure I didn't lose to much or whatever. Diet dude was a dickhead, never visited more than once.

>at 14 I already despised some unfashiony things
Such as big-lipped DC sneakers. I was into the slimmer adidas skate-shoes. Got my first pair of vans Old skool at 15 and wore them for 4.5 years on and off, I guess you can call me a basic faggot.

>skating friends outgrew eachother and me
Worst time in my life. Dad was mistreating my bigger brother in every way, he turned to drugs and moved out at 16, (I was 14 at the time)
I don't remember too much about this time, it's all kind of a haze. I spent a lot of time with the black haired girl from earlier. We hit it off and became sort of an item, for a few weeks, but ended up as best friends instead.
>still wore vans and baggyish jeans

I stumbled into depression by being my dad's new object of complaints. Close to failing school due to almost no presence, but I was a smart kid and did all the tests without failing.

>I discovered tumblr and 4chan
Mainly browsed tumblr for the pictures of nature. I had never been outside of my country (parents wouldn't take me) and all these pictures blew my mind.

I got my first pair of leather boots from him, and stumbled into mfa when asking what to wear them with.
>got tips of fits, didn't like them, kept wearing baggy knitted sweaters
I wasn't into the whole button-down shirt with chinos look, so I just wore whatever.

>when brother died i had nobody to inherit from
So I had to start buying my own stuff. I was still on tumblr always so I went a bit overboard with knitted sweaters. To this day, my parents still buy me atl least one every christmas.

>no more skating meant new opportunities in shoes
Looked up to better dressed neighbour. First time I fell in love with a piece of clothing was when he got back from the US with a pair of leather boots. I had to have a pair of those.
>not a lot of money because I developed some bad drinking-wine-alone-all-the-time habits.
Wine is really expensive over here by the way. I still haven't had afford to buy a pair of leather boots but saving this month to maybe ask my uncle to buy me a pair when he leaves for americe in april. I'm still dressing in oversized knitted sweaters but looking for a way out. I have started collecting some inspo in an imgur album, but haven't really found any fit I want to copy piece by piece. I like black-on-black a lot. Ordered a pair of dark 511's to start off my wardrobe building.

Was a disgusting little angsty goth/emo teen in baggy black clothes from ages 13 to 15-16 or something. Then at age 16 I quit playing world of warcraft all day, expanded my musical taste and discovering /fa/ I started getting into regular good decent clothes. Started shopping at H&M, after I turned 17 I was a skateboarder so I bought all my clothes at this streetwear/skateshop. Flannels and other obnoxious graphic tees with dumb colours.

Only since I was 20 last year I took interest in dressing more sharp, clean and mature. Pretty much just shop online nowadays for clothes. Grey tones, Earth tones, slim fit, basic sneakers, black clark desert boots. Nothing too fancy, I like to keep things simple.

I've gone a long way, but I'm proud. :-)

wait what ? what the fuck ?

Me : Always kind of liked being "well dressed" but never really had any clue how to even do it. For a long period of time I stopped giving a damn and was wearing most clothes at least one size too big, was terrible.

Then somehow I stumbled into a men's fashion blog that explained a lot of things very clearly : discovered facts about jeans first and foremost, and realized the 2 brand new pairs I had gotten just a couple months before weren't good, and were going to be too big because I had no idea about jeans really stretching (and they did get too big).

Decided to focus on basic clothes for at least a year (still going on basically) and threw away almost everything I used to wear, though most of it was actually really old so it needed to discarded anyway.

I then started really paying attention to a lot of details that most men don't seem to even know about, just like I didn't know about them before. Still trying to build a decent wardrobe, haven't really found my own style yet but I feel like I've come really far just trying to get the basics down.

/fa/ helped giving me ideas of what I liked and what I didn't like, mostly by exposing me to different kinds of clothes and brands I didn't usually get to see anywhere around me in real life. I don't exactly remember what year I first started browsing but I think it must have been maybe 2 years ago or so.
