I wrote this ages ago and I don't like the idea of it being used as a set of rules, but I think it's elocuted clearly enough to be a good starting point for developing a color vocabulary that you can use to articulate what you like.

yo complementary colors: let's talk about them

fuck wearing them together in obvious instances: fuck orange ties on blue shirts, fuck green pants worn with red shirts and vise versa, thank god purple and yellow is too flamboyant for most rookies to attempt

I find that a really appealing way to work vaguely complementary colors into a palette is by arranging a high contrast in value most importantly. Saturating one of the two while desaturating the other is also a really nice way to draw attention to the contrast without making you want to rip out your eyes.

Maroon can basically be described as purple with lots of red in it. The beige jacket is effectively a desaturated light yellow. If they were both gray though, desaturated entirely, I think this fit would still look nice because of how the value is arranged among all the colors. Takeaway point of the day here: oh look, complementary colors that don't make it look like some clueless asshole just read an article about power tie combos on his ISP homepage.


IMO value is the most important aspect of color pairing.
Saturation next.
Hue takes the back seat for me.

I think brown and green is one of the first color combinations people think of when they want an outfit with a big green jacket in it or something
