This book absolutely changed my life. I shutter thinking what my life would be like had I never come across this gem. I can honestly say that by the last page of the book a gigantic burden is lifted from one's soul. Almost as to say, you've reached a new milestone in your life, you're that much closer to having a fulfilled life. Tao Lin is the genius of the 21st century. Contemporary literature belongs to him... NO, he is contemporary literature in motion.

It's not fair to the child.

Beyond simply inculcating a perverse morality it deprives the child of the diversity inherent in a male/female household that is essential to developing into a well-balanced adult.

Liberalism is destroying this once great country.

Start off by not reading junk like novels and read sometihng practical.

I laugh when people think they are smart as fuck because they read some fantasy story that isn't relevant to their living situation. It's honestly the equivalent of playing a video game or watching tv - EXCEPT not exactly because it builds your focus and vocabulary, but like I said, it's all just fantasy.

SO if you want to get the best out of reading, find a writer who has ideas and read his work, so that you can develop a mind of your own. Or read something practical, something that teaches you a skill. Like How to Influence people by dale carnegie, or the 33 strategies of war.

This
Much fiction doesn't do shit to expand intelligence. Yet when people read shit like Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings, Game of Thrones, That Hunger Games shit or whatever trendy shit exists because it has a show or a movie, and people swear you down they read the books before the show [yeah right as if the flux of interest in the books didn't come around the time of the movie].

But back to the point. No books don't make you smart, because all you do is read. The simple act of readings something doesn't make you smart, it's about what you read and if that shit can be applied somewhere. There's a whole lot of dumb shit in books. 50 Shades of Grey for example. Books like movies are subject to the same shit. You sit down and watch 2 and a Half Men, that show is stupid. You could sit down and watch PBS programs , Bill Nye The Science Guy, or you can watch geeky shit like Star Trek which your knowledge of will only impress other geeks.

The problem is books have become a symbol of intelligence in themselves, so much that every dumbass tumblrette things just because she's reading the new Hunger Games books she smart. They brag on reading books, and that is just stupid.

But people also tend to think just reading or watching shit with a geeky aura around it makes them look smart. Again, watching something like Star Trek or reading books like Harry Potter. Geek =/= smart, so doing geeky shit, taking up interest in superheroes, video games, and other pop culture shit geared at geeks does not make you look smart. The simple act of picking up a book doesn't make you smart or make you look smart. A lot of stupid stuff has been written in books. A lot of idiots have written books.

Sure it can help improve your vocabulary (as you can see, mines if very shit) but the simple act of reading isn't going to make you anymore intelligent. It's about what you read.

It depends on how you learn, and what you already know. People are against the idea of "self help" books, believing readers are just looking for some magic cure, but obviously that is not the case for you.
If you are willing to read a book, acknowledging they are ideas, not universal truths, and are planning on actively thinking about and practicing the techniques, then there are some great books out there.

so many plebs itt holy moly

but the reason why The Stranger was loved by some many people is because it managed to spread a worldview via a truly captivating story, not with semantics and a made up language.. smh

atleast you seem to have decent taste judging from what you're reading

right now I'm finishing my hardcover of pynchon's 'V' that I got from my daddy, working my way through The Brothers Karamazow on my reader, just finished with Man's Search for Meaning and about to start reading Calvino's 'Invisible Cities'

Reading The Idiot by Dostoevsky, as well as a rather interesting book about American colonial history and race relations for one of my classes.

Still trying to make complete sense of The Aleph, but with that little nagging idea that I probably never will and that is the whole point.

Joyce's Dubliners and The Anxiety Of Influence by Harold Bloom.
Dubliners is an easy read and often very moving (despite the occasional odd, morally grey moment featuring children) but The Anxiety Of Influence is pretty dense, I don't really know enough about the canon to appreciate what bloom is trying to say 100%

pretty depressing read.

Just finished reading Hrabal's little town where time stood still, incredibly beautiful prose like god damn.

reading Fitzgerald's Tales from the Jazz Age rn, when i'm in classes i like to stick to smaller novels/short stories cause i just don't have the time to slough through some 600 page book. Gonna start reading Lovecraft or p Dick next i think.
