I've noticed that the black women in television advertising tend to be the light skinned, curly haird type, like Sage Steele. It's like they're being diverse without being too threatening, lol.

On the other hand, black high fashion and runway models a lot of the time seem to be really dark brown.

yeah, personally I find that light skinned girls with more caucasian features to be way more attractive, but I'm a white guy living in a very white country so I'm guessing it makes sense

Yeah, they probably use the really dark runway models for the 'exoticism' factor. They use them as examples of 'genuine Africa' while the lighter runway models who are also black are used as examples of 'special cases' of black beauty. Usually they all have more of what the general population view as white features.

A majority of high fashion consumers are white. White people identify with other white people more than they do with black people. Thus it's in the best interest of the designers to use white models.

This could be reaching but, Jourdan was interviewed in some show, where she stated that she overheard the hairstylist/dresser tell someone that they did not know how to style her hair. I feel like, hiring more black models means that there will need to be hair stylists hired who understand black hair. Since most white hairstylists avoid learning how to manage black hair since they deem it a hassle, that means the jobs won't be going to them.
